IMPRQVEMENT IN CORN AND PUMPKIN PLANTERS.

Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. JONES and DANIEL L. FRANTZ, of McKeansburg, in the county of Schuylkill and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn and Pumpkin Planter; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication. A

The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a corn and pumpkin-seed planter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of our planter. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same through the line m x, Fig. l. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of detached parts thereof.

A represents a frame of any suitable dimensions, having boxes on its under side for the reception of the axle B, upon the ends of which are placed the driving-wheels C C. In a fullsized machine one or both of these wheels will be connected with the axle by a suitable ratchet device arranged in the usual manner, so as to revolve` the axle when the machine moves forward, but when moving backward the wheels will turn on the axle. On each side of the frame A is placed a seed-box, D, one of which is, by a vertical partition, a, divided into two compartments, D1 and D2. The outer compartment, D1, is for corn, the same as the entire box on the other side, and the inner compart` ment, D2, is for pumpkin-seed. Through the bottoms of the two seed-boxes D D passes a seed-dropping slide, E, running parallel with the axle, and below this slide in each box is a slide, G, running at right angles with the seeddropping slide E. H is a tube attached to the under side of each seed-box D, and to the lower end thereof is attached a flexible tube, I. In each slide G is an aperture, b, corresponding with the opening to the tube or conductor H. In one end of the slide E are two openings, d

and e, the size of the former being regulated by means of a slide, f, as shown in Fig. 3. This end of the slide E is Within the double box, the opening d being in the corn-compartment D', and the opening e in the pumpkin-seed compartment D2. The other end of the slide E has an adjustable opening to correspond with the opening d `just described, so that the amount of corn to be sown can be easily regulated. In each seed-box D are suitable cut-oifs h, as shown. J represents the shoe through which the seed drops into the ground, the flexible tube I being inserted in said shoe. At the lower end of the shoe is attached the shovelplow K. At the upper end ofthe shoe are forward-projecting ears i i, between which the rear end of the beam L is inserted and pivoted. The shoe is then held by means of a wooden pin, av, passing through the ears above the beam, so that if the plow strikes any obstruction said pin will break and allow the plow and shoe to turn on the pivot, and thus prevent any breakage to any part of the planter. The beam L is twisted and its front end forked and hinged under the front bar of the frame A. To each side of the beam L is attached or pivoted a bar, L', which passes backward through a vertical loop, k, formed on or attached to the side of the shoe J, and to the rear end of each bar L' is attached a covering-plow, K'. On the axle B is secured a cog-wheel, M, which gears with a smaller cog-wheel, M', upon a crank-shaft, m. The crank on this shaft is, by a pitman, n, connected with an arm, p, extending from a vertical rock-shaft, s, having its bearing in the frame A. On the upper end of this rock-shaft is another arm, p', the outer end of which is slotted and placed over a pin, t, on the seed-droppin g slide E. By this means said slide obtains the necessary reciprocating motion. O is a platform in front of the seat, (seat not shown.) 0n the side of this platform is pivote-d a lever, P, which is held in a suitable toothed rack, It. From the lever P a rod, al, extends forward and connects with an arm, b1, upon a rock-shaft, S. This shaft is provided with other arms b2 b2, connected, by rods a2, with the slides Gr under the seed-boxes D. Another rod, d1, connects the lever P with an arm, el, extending from another rock-shaft, S', on the rear part of the frame, and this shaft is also provided with other arms, e2, which are, by rods d2, connected with the shoes J. By 'moving the lever P the slides G and shoes J are operated \simultaneously; the slides are closed and shoes raised by one movement of the lever; and by another movement of the lever the slides are opened and the shoes lowered. T represents the tongue of the machine, upon which are attached the usual double-tree with its single-trees. On the tongue is also hinged a bar, V, which maybe thrown to either side and rest in a fork, h'. On the outer end of the arm V is pivoted a bar, V', which is intended to hang over the row last planted, and thus mark Vand guide the machine, so as to get the rows at equal distances apart.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination of the lever P, rods al dl, rocking shafts S S', with arms b1 b2 and el 02, respectively, Connecting-rods a2 cl2, slides G, and shoes J, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination of the seed-boxes D D, one being1 divided in two compartments, Dl D2, the sliding flroppingbar E, and eut-oill slide G, all constructed and operated substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The combination of the twisted hinged beam L, shoe J, With ears z' i and loops 7c 7c, side beams L' L', and plows K and K' K', all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
