EDWARD H. MCCLOUD, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE KINNEAR MANUFAO TUB/ING- GOMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OI-IIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
FIRE-RESISTING SHUTTER O'R DOOR.
Application filed September 7, 1922. Serial No. 586,759.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. MOCLOUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fire-Resisting Shutters or Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object an improved means for testing at will automatically closing rolling lire shutters or doors to ascertain whether they are in condition to function properly in case of tire.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing-- Figure 1 is a combined vertical sectional and elevational view looking at that end of a shutter containing the releasing and governor mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the shutter coil and drum.
Fig. 3 is a detail combined. elevation and sectional View of the end bracket adjacent which is the governor mechanism and re- Wind pulley.
Fig. 4 is a detail in side view of the catch for holding the governor retaining chain.
In the views 5 designates the shutter roller shaft containing a gravity actuated rolling shutter 5 said shaft being supported at its near end, as seen in the drawings, in brackets 6. Said shaft is equipped with the escapement governor mechanism including a ratchet wheel on the shaft and an oscillating ring 7 on the end bracket carrying spring actuated pawls 7 a toengage the ratchet wheel. The said ring 7 is pivoted at its upper end at 8 on the end bracket and has a tooth 9 at its lower end engaged by the tooth 10 on a lever 11 also pivoted on the end bracket. The lever 11 is normally held up with the tooth 1O engaged with the tooth 9 to prevent oscillation of the escapement ring and therefore the unwinding of the shutter by means of a chain 12. The chain 12 is connected at one end with a hollow iron brick protruding to the exterior side of the building where the chain is provided with an exposed fusible 11k said chain being passed Inward through the brick and under a suitable roller 14 on the lever 11, over a roller 15 on the bracket, through a. suitable opening in the hood and thence downward to within reach of an operator on the interior of the building. To hold the/chain 12 with the lever in position to latch the escapeinent ring and the shutter in its raised position there is provided a small bracket 16 having a slot 16 into which the chain can be swung by lateral movement to engage the appropriate link to hold the latch 11 in the position raised. By manually withdrawing the chain from the slot 16 the lever 11 may be lowered and released from the escapement wheel thereby releasing the shutter and permitting it to unroll to closed position. The same effect takes place if the fusible link at 13 is melted by a rise in temperature due to nearby conflagration.
To restore the shutter to its raised position the shaft 5 is provided with a. suitable winding spool 17 to which is attached a cable 18 extended downward inside the building toa. winding drum 19 contained in a suitable housing within easy reach of an attendant. The cable is made of ample length to permit the closing of the shutter without detachment of the cable from the drum. When the shutter closes either by manual or thermal release of the chain 12 the cable 18 winds up on the spool 17 and the shutter can afterwards he raised to open position by rewinding the cable on the drum 19, a crank 20 being applied to the shaft of the drum for that purpose. After the shutter has been wound up to its raised position after its release by thermal action the shaft 5 can be again latched by putting a fresh fusible link in the chain and securing the chain as before described with the latch lever raised to engage the escapement ring. Or if the chain has been released manually, as for the purpose of testing the working condition of the shutter, the chain is drawn down to raise the lever 11 to latching position and caught in the bracket 15 as before set forth.
The forms of the parts can be changed without departing from the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a gravity actuated fire resisting rolling shutter or door, a w; d' therefor, and means for norg the same when the shutter or door is wound thereon, of thermally and manually cont-rolled means for releasing said latching means to permit the unwindin, "s
ing of the shutter or door if raised, means for rewinding the shutter or door comprising a cable, a spool rotated by the Winding drum and. to which spool one end of said cable is attached and upon which it is adapted to be wound when the door or shutter is lowered and means for unwinding said cable from said spool and thereby rewinding the door or shutter.
2. The combination with a gravity actuated fire resisting rolling shutter or door, a winding drum therefor, and means for normally latching the same when the shutter or door is wound thereon, of thermally and 15 manually controlled means consisting of a EDWARD H. MoOLOUD.
