BROUDER.
Application lecl June 20, 1921.
To all 'whom t may conce/m.'
Be it known that l, LAWRENCE Buan- FinLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delaware, in the county of Delaware and State or Uhio, have invented a certain nevi7 and useful Improvement in lrooders, of which the following' is a specilication.
Young chicks are subject to coldness et the feet hence it is important for their health and proper development that these members be kept viaria especially in the broeder. Moreover when their feet are colt the chicks tend to crowd together for inntual warmth and in doing so many are crushed and bruised or otherwise injured,
The principal object ot the invention to provide iinproved ineens whereby the entire floor of a broeder may be unitornily heated or without overheating; it in a particular spot thus avoiding injury by crowding and crushing and individual injury by the burning of the feet.
My invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features et novelty being finally claiined.
ln the accompanying drawing forming part hereof- Figure l is a vertical central longitudine-.l section on the line l-l 2.
Fig. 2 is a plan view with portions brolren out and omitted.
ln the views 5 designates the iloor ot the broeder7 said floor being of sheet metal ot oblong;- forni and hollow throughout. The floor is supported upon sill 6, and further is surrounded by a closed rail or wall 7 as shown to confine the chicks to the floor.
At one end or side of the 'door is a water heating chamber 8 surrounded by a jacket 8a spaced from the water chamber to confine the heat. At its lower end the water heating` chamber 8 connnunicates by means of a small pipe with the hollow floor while the upper end of the chamber is connecten with the opposite side or end ci the floor by means of a pipe 9 that is slightly inclined upward to a point where it dips ttor connection with the floor. The water chanr ber is heated by means Iof a lamp 10 or a suitable gas burner.
Serial No. 478,866.
Supported above the rail and spaced from the upper edge thereof is a roof ll troni which the usual hover strips l2 are hung. .lt is obvious that because the root is spaced frein the upper edge ot the rail fresh von tilating air is admitted troni all sides to below the rooiq while the chicks are protected troni drafts of chilling' wind by the closed rail.
1Water can be supplied to the floor.4 the inclined pipe and the water heater through an opening near the top of the latter provided with a cover 13.
When water is heated by the burner under the heater it circulates troni the heater up the inclined or advance pipe through the floor and bach to the heater, the arrows indicating generally the course ci its travel.
ln order to prevent the floor `frein burning1 the feet oi the chiel-rd should the water become overheated, the floor should be covered with a layer 14- of paper or other slow conductor of heat. However, the large area oit the exposed floor, as coinparcd with the size of the inclined or advanced pipe 9, makes it practically impossible to oveheat the water or burn or injure the chicha and promotes an eduable heat in the broeder.
The :torins ot the parts can be changed without departing1 troni the gist ot the invention as claimed.
lililhat l claire is:
A broeder including in combination7 a fixed surrounding); rail and a` root above and spaced from the upper edge ott the rail in lined and permanent relation to the raih a floor consisting oi a fiat hollow water receiving; structure enten-ding horizontally in all directions under the roof and to the surrounding' rail?. a water heating chamber connnunicating with said hollow floor at one side thereof, and a pipe of relatively small capacity as compared with the capacity oit the door connecting` said heater with the other side of the tlo'o ,id pipe extending; above the tloor and under the root.
