CARD GAME.
Application filed August 30, 1923. Serial No. 660,128.
T 0 all to hem it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, CLARENCE D. BARR, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Birmingham, in the county of Jefierson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card Games, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to card games and is especially adapted to making young people and children familiar with the books of the Bible.
To that end I arrange the titles of the books in sets or books of cards, each card bearing the name of a book or books of the Bible together with other titles upon the same related subject-matter. It has heretofore been proposed to use the names of books of the Bible, but as far as I am aware it has not been proposed to use them in the way here pointed out; the essential idea of the game being to group the various books in such related order that one familiar with the game will have the various books which relate to a particular subject, or of the same general character, grouped in his mind. This will be more clearly understood from the description hereafter appended.
The accompanying drawings show the arrangement of the cards in some of the groups or books in which they are assembled. Not all of them have been illustrated, because there are thirteen books, as is common in card games; the number of cards is not the usual fifty-two, but embraces thirty-six cards carrying the titles of the Old Testament, and twenty-three carrying the titles of the New, or fifty-nine in all It does not seem necessary to illustrate all of them in order to make the game clearly understood from the description.
The titles of the groups are as follows, for example, the Law, comprising the books of the Pentateuch, the others as here stated Law.-Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy.
Hist0ry.I and II Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther.
History [L-Joshua, Judges, Ruth, I and II Samuel, I and II Kings.
Dev0ti0oi.Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Song of Solomon.
Major Pr0phets.-Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel.
Ecclesiastes,
Minor Prophets l.Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah.
Minor Prop/Lets H.-Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi.
Biograp7zy.l /Iatthew, Mark, Luke, John.
History aml Pr0phecfe .Acts, Revelations.
Special Letters l.-I and II Corinthians, Romans, Galatians, Ephesians.
Special Letters [[.I Timothy, II Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews.
Special Letters [H.Colossians, Philippians, I Thessalonians, II Thessalonians.
General Letters.Ja-mes, I and II Peter, I, II and III John, Jude.
Each title as here given represents a card, I and II Chronicles, for example, being on a single card.
The method of playing the game is as follows:
The name of each card is in the center of the card, and the other names that are necessary to complete a book are on each card, the division that the cards belong in is at the top of the card. There are 59 cards to the deck.
1. Shuttle the cards and deal six to each player, one at a time, then place the remainder of deck in center of table facedownward.
2. The person to the left of the dealer then commences the game by calling for any cards from any of the players until he misses, i. e., until he calls for a card from some person who has not the card.
3. When any player calls for a card and the person from Whom he call does not have the card, that person must draw a card from the top of the deck; and if the card he draws from the deck is the card called for by the player, h must surrender it to the player, who is entitled to another call.
- 4:- When a player misses, the next one to the left may call for any cards he may Want of any player until he misses, and
so on.
5. When any player obtains a full set, he lays them aside on the table, announcing to the party what book is complete.
6. When all the sets have been collected and formed into books, the player that has the most books wins the game.
I claim:
1. A card game based upon a literary production, and comprising a plurality of books corresponding in number to the major divisions of the product-ion, each book including a plurality of cards corresponding in number to the minor divisions of the major division to Which the book pertains, each of the cards of each book having the designation of the book, the designation of the card, and the designations of the other cards of the same book.
2. A card game based upon the Bible, including a book or set of cards for each major division, each book including a card for each minor division of the major division to which the book pertains, each of the cards of each book having the designation of the major division to Which it pertains, and a designation peculiar to itself of one of the sub-divisions of the major division to Which it belongs, and in addition the designations of the other cards of the book. I
3. A card game comprising a card for each book of the Bible, each card containing the title of a major division of the Bible and the titles of all the minor divisions of the major division. the cards containing the title of each major division constituting a book or set.
Signed at Birmingham, Alabama, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama this 27 day of August A. D. 1923.
