PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES PARIDY, 0F BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
LOCK BOLT.
Application jled April 20, 1925. Serial No. 24,415.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES PARIDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of St. Clair, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock Bolts, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming al part hereof.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly described and distinctly claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved lock-bolt, which may be used in the many places wher-e ordinary nuts and bolts are now used, but the primary object of my invention is to provide an improved lock-bolt for use in connection with the building or constructing of railroads in making joints and which will, if adopted, eliminate the now common use of the nuts on the bolts when making joints, or when joining two railway rails together, and which invention will be simple in construction, and of low cost to manufacture.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a sectional end-elevation of a Arailroad-rail having my invention applied thereto, the section being taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 2 is a side-view of a pair of railroad- Irails joined together, showing how my invention is used in this class of work.
Referring now to the drawing by numerals, the nume-ral l designates the ball of Aa railroad-rail, while 2 designates the web 'thereof and 3 the base thereof.
The numeral 4 designates the usual lishplate as used in the present day construction .of railroads, while the numeral 5 designates a fish-plate having studs 6 riveted or otherwise secured thereto.
Said studs 6 are provided with collars 7 upon which are pivot-ally mounted a plurality of inverted Y-shaped pawls 8.
Said fish-plates 5 are also provided with a plurality of screw-threaded holes and the threads of the latter are adapted to receive the screw-threads formed upon the outer periphery of a plurality of bolts 9.
Said bolts 9 are provided with a plurality of longitudinal V-shaped slots or grooves l0; the latter being cut to extend the full length of the said screw-threads.
The numeral 1l designates the arms of the said pawls 8.
My invention is used in the following manner When it is desired to join two railwayrails together, as in the construction of a railroad, and my invention is being used in said construction, the rails are placed end to end as in the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and, as the fish-plates l and 5 are placed into position, the bolts 9 are inserted and screwed into holes provided therefor, and a wrench is then applied to the heads of said bolts and they are tightened as tight as possible.
The fish-plate 5 already occupying the position shown in Fig. 2, brings the plurality of pawls 8 in position ready for the workman to move one of the arms 11 of said pawls 8 in position to engage one of the plurality of slots or grooves l0 in said bolts 9.
It is apparent that no matter how much jar or shaking they said bolts or pawls are subjectiQLthe aawls will TentntllLSaid bolts 9 from unscrewing, thereby preventing i 'ls-fromb'ec g unjoined.
While I have illustrated certain details which I deemed to be particularly effective, and have illustrated a construction which is very cheap to make and easy to be assembled, I d0 not wish to be limited to these details, as it is obvious that many changes may bemade therein without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is z- In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of screw-threaded bolts having a plurality of longitudinal slots or grooves cut thereon and extending the full length of said threads; fish-plates having a plurality of screw-threaded holes formed therein and adapted to receive the threads of said bolts; and a plurality of inverted Y-shaped pawls pivotally mounted upon collared studs that are Secured to said fish-plates in such a mannery as to permit one of the arms of said pztwls to engage one of the said slots or grooves in said bolts after the latter have been inserted into the screw-threaded holes in said fish-plates, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this speeication.
CHARLES PARIDY.
