CARRYING BAG.

Application filed September 8, 1924. Serial No. 738,580.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GALEN TILDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ames, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Carrying Bag, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a carrying bag or device of simple, durable movement between the half of the extension i l and comparatively inexpensive construction.

More particularly, my invention relates to a carrying bag of flexible form, which is provided with reinforcing extension members, so that when the bag is in carrying position, it will retain its desired form.

Still. a further object is to provide a. baghavin side members, which when vertically exten ed will increase the height of the sides of the bag, and when horizontally positioned, to provide 'a cover for the bag.

Still a further object is to provide handles on the sides of the bag which are of suflicient length to extend above the extensions on the sides when the extensions are in vertical position for partially retaining the. extended members in raised or vertical position.

Still afurther object is to provide suitable coao'ting fastening elements on the extensions so that when they are horizontally positioned, they can be locked together for serving as a cover for the bag.

With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contem lated are attained, as hereinafter more 1 set forth, pointed out in my claims and drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved carrying bag, parts being broken away and shown in section to better illustrate the construction.

In the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference character A to indicate generally a bag formed of flexible material such as fabricated rubber cloth or leather, ettc. The bag A includes side walls 10, end Walls 11, and a bottom 12.

The bottom 12 may be provided with a stifi'ener member if desired.

The end walls 11 are of flexible material and are capable of being bent inwardly, as

at 13, and also at the two inclined lines 14.

The. bending inwardly of the sides" 11, as just specified, will permit the bottom of the bag to be turned upwardly that is, to vertical position, with the two side walls resting substantially against each other.

When the pants are in position, as just mentioned, the end walls 11 are also bent inwardly as at the line 15.

One of the sidewalls 10 will also be bent inwardly as at 16.

I am aware of the fact that other bags or containers are provided with bottoms that can be folded up along the surface of the sides thereof and it is my urpose in explain ing the flexible or benda le features of the bag to more clearly brin out the necessity of the reinforcing mem rs and extended sides which form the real heart of my invention.

Secured to each of the sides 10 are handle elements 17, which extend through slit openafter stitched to the sides 10 with the lower ends of the handle elements resting against the inner'surfaoes of the sides 10.

The sides 10 are each provided with an extension shaped in the form of a receiving pocket 19, which receives a stiffening, or reinforcing element-20 of an suitable material. .The reinforcing mem r 20 and the receiving pocket 19 form the side extension mem PB;

The extension members may be moved to vertical position and when in this positio'n,

the bag A will be opened and articles may extend up beyond" the upper edge -of the extension members and be received therebetween.

The handles 17 are of sufficient length so as to not be interfered with when the extensions are in raised position.

When commodities are placed within the bag and the sides are in raised position, the handles will partially serve to retain the extensions in raised position.

The extensions may rest one upon another, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, and when in this position will serve as a cover or top for the bag itself.

Coacting fastening elements 21 are formed on the extension members for engagement with each other when the members are in horizontal position one above another.

The reinforcing of the extension members from end to end will cause the bag, although very flexible, to maintain its shape.

In Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings, I have shown the extension members divided in two sections B and C and in this particular case, the reinforcing member 20 is divided into two sections so that there is secured a yielding or flexible connection 22 between the sections B and C.

The extensions, when formed with the portions B and C, can be lapped over each other and partially inserted in the bag itself, as clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, for bringing the sides of the bag near the top quite close together.

In Figure 3 of the drawings, I have shown the portions 13 and C in horizontal position and in Figure 4.0f the drawings,-

1 have shown the portions B and C in position where only the parts B are in horizontal position and the parts C rest against the sides 10 of the bag. The sides 10 can be provided with fastening elements to 00- act with the fastening element upon the portion C when the parts assume the position shown in Figure 4.

One of the portions Bv of the extension members may be provided with a fastening element to coact with the one on portion C when the parts assume the position shown in Figure It may be here mentioned that the important feature of my invention resides in the side extensions which serve the purpose of extended sides. as well as a top or cover member when desired.

'I he extension members are reinforced. which structure maintains the bag in proper position from end to end.

Somechanges may be made in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of my invention, without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention and it is my intention to cover by my claims, any modified forms of strucure oruse of mechanical equivalents, wh ch may be reasonably included within their S00 0.

claim as my invention:

1. A carrying bag comprising sides, ends and a bottom of flexible material, flat reinforcing members on the upper edge of the sides for maintaining the form of the bag, the reinforcing members being capable of being moved to substantially vertical position where they are spaced apart and capable of being moved to position to lie one over another for forming a cover for the bag and holding the sides distended.

2. A carrying bag comprising sides, ends and a bottom of flexible material, flat reinforcing members on the upper edge of the sides for maintaining the form of the bag,

the reinforcing members being capable of being moved to substantially vertical position where they are spaced apart and capable of being moved to position to lie one over another for forming a cover for the bag and holding the sides distended, handles on said sides adapted to retain the reinforcing members against outward movement when they are in vertical position.

3. A carrying bag comprising sides, ends and a bottom of flexible material. flat reinforcing members on the upper edge of the sides for maintaining the form of the bag, the reinforcing members being capable of being moved to substantially vertical position where they are spaced apart and capable of being moved to position to lie one over another for forming a cover for the bag and holding the sides distended. and fastening elements on said reinforcing members.

4. A carrying bag comprising sides, ends and a bottom of flexible material; flat reinforcing members on the upper edge of the sides for maintaining the form of the bag, the reinforcing members being capable of being moved to substantially vertical position where they are spaced apart and capable of being moved to position to lie one over another for forming a cover for the bag and holding the sides distended, said reinforcing members being of two parts hingedly connected together.

5. A carrying bag comprising sides, ends and a bottom of flexible material, flat reinforcing members on the upper edge of the sides for maintaining the form of the bag. the reinforcing members being capableof being moved to substantially vertical position where they are spaced apart and capable of being moved to position to lie one over another for forming a cover for the bag and holding the sides distended, said reinforcing members being of two parts hingedly connected together, and the two innermost parts ada ted to overlap each other in another position of the ba GKLEN TILDEN,
