UNITED STATES .P T EN '1 @F HENRY LEWIS KNOL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNO'R OF ONE-HALF TO ALFRED HAHN, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.v
Application led April 21, 1924. Serial No. 708,019.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Lnwrs KNoL,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops, of which Vmthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to mops, and esgecially to the type of mop having means thereon for wringing out the mopping part; and the principal object of the invention is to provide a mop of this type with means for really wringing the mopping part substantially dry.
In the mops of this type which are on the market the part of the shaft on which the mopping' means is mounted and wrung is of the same thickness as the upper or hand engaged part and the entire shaft or member is usually of wood, thus making it diiiicult during the twisting or wringing of the mopping means upon said large wooden part, and practically impossible, to wring said mopping means anywheres near dry, since the moist pliable strands of the mopping means cling to the enlarged wooden surface, and prevent complete twisting and wringing thereof. I overcome this defect by reducing the lower part of the shaft in diameter and by making it of metal, preferably by using a thin smooth or polished metal rod around vphich the mopping means can be readily twisted and substantially wrung entirely dry, since no friction results between able material of the mopping means.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a view of my invention, with the mopping means in mopping position;
Fig. 2 is a view thereof, showing the mopping means in the elevated and twisted or wrung position;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the operating mechanism;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and
the smooth surface of the rod and the pli-4 Fig. G is an enlarged cross sectional view on line (5*6 of Fig. `4.
The preferred form of construction comprises a shaft or main member 10 of wood or other suitable material and having a reduced, smooth lower portion 11, which preferably consists of a smooth thin metallic rod mounted in the upper part 10 yand having a substantially polished surface. Mopping means 12, consisting of the usual strands of pliable absorbent materialT is fastened with its lower end upon the lower end of rod 11 and with its upper end upon a collar 13, as with ring or wire 14. The collar 13 is slidably mounted on shaft 11 and is preferably provided with a metallic collar 15 having slots 15 in its upper edge and hooks 16 extending into said slots.
yThe operating means for wringing the mopping means 12 includes a sprocket wheel 17 with sprockets or teeth 17', which is rotatably mounted on the lower part of shaft 10 and has a collar 18 fastened thereto which is provided with pins 19 adapted to move in slots 15 and engage and cooperate with hooks 16. Said wheel 17 is held in position on said shaft by means of a ring 2() fastened with a pin 21 on said shaft and rod 11, and by a sleeve 22 on said shaft at the opposite side of ring 20.
The means for rotating the sprocket wheel 17 includes a disc or wheel 23 having openings 23 adjacent the periphery for engaging sprockets or teeth 17. Said disc is mounted on a bracket 24 engaging sleeve 22 and is rotatably held in position with a bolt 25 passing through disc 23, bracket 24, sleeve 22, shaft 10. and rod 11. holding said elements in assembled position. A hand crank 26 with a suitable handle is fastened to said disc for rotating the same and operating sprocket wheel 17 to twist the collar 13 and the upper ends of the strands forming the mopping means 12.
The exterior surface of rod 11 is smooth and polished, and said mopping means will not adhere to this polished surface but will freely twist around the same, the crank means 26 and connected disc and sprocket wheel are also arranged to provide considerable power thus enabling person to actually wring the mop substantially dry.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eect, this is capable of .variation and modification without departing` from the spirit of the invention. l, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of .such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A mop comprising a shaft, a smooth metallic rod of smaller cross-section fastened in the lower. part of said shaft, mopping` means of absorbent material fastened at one end to the lower part of said rod, al notched collar slidably mounted on said rod and fastened to the other end of said mopping means, operating means mounted on said shaft and provided with means adapted to engage the notch of said collar for stretching` said mopping` means and for twisting,` and wringing the same.
2. A mop comprisinga shaft having,` a smooth metallic lower portion, mopping means fixed at one end to the lower part of said metallic portion, a notched collar slidably mounted on said metallic portion and fastened to the other end of said mopping means, a collar rotatably mounted on said metallic portion and provided with pins adapted to engage the notches of said first mentioned collar and rotate the same for twisting and wringing said mopping means, and handle means to rotate the second mentioned collar.
3. A mop comprising a shaft with a thin metallic rod on its lower end, mopping' means of absorbent material mounted with one end on the lower end of said metallic rod and having a collar fastened to its upper end, a sprocket wheel with means to engage said collar and twist said mopping means on said rod, and a disc with a handle fastened on its outer face and with openings therein to receive and actuate the sprockets of said wheel.
all. A mop comprising` a shaft with a smooth metallic rod fastened in position in its lower end, mopping` means of absorbent material fastened at one end to the lower end of said rod and having a notched collar at its upper end slidably mounted on said rod, a sprocket wheel provided with pins to engage the notches of said collar and twist said mopping means, a disc mounted on said shaft and having openings to receive the sprockets of said wheel and rotate the same, and a hand crank fastened to said disc for operating the mechanism and wringing said mopping,` means dry.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HENRY LEVIS KNOL.
