FINISHING MACHINE.
Application filed July 14, 1924. Serial No. 725,953.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN J. HUG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Highland, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Finishing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in finishing machines for roadways of concrete Drawings.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of one of the front corners of said machine.
Description.
As illustrated, I employ a traveling frame 10 supported on wheels 11 resting on the kerbs or side-forms 1212. The motor 13 drives the tractor wheels 11 and other mechanism through the driving-sh aft or jackshaft 14 carrying sprocket-wheels 15 which in turn drive the chain-belts 16. The operation of the shaft 14 is controlled by a diiferential 17 and hand-lever 18.
At the front end of the frame 10, the traction-wheel 11 is provided with a gear 19 which engages with and drives the gear 20, said gear 20 being mounted on the upright 21 by means of the stub-shaft 22. A trans verse element 23, of the frame 10, carries the bracket 24, at the front end of which the transverse pintle 25 is secured; the bracket 24 being slidingly secured upon the frame element 23 by means of looped straps 26.
Suspended from the pintle 25 by means of straps 27 is the bar 28, upon the front and bottom of which is the inflexible strike-off cutter 29 formed as shown in Figure 1; whileat its rear the bar 28 carries the flexible smoothing element 30 having the upturned flange 40 along its rear edge.
The bar 28 is reciprocated by the pitman 31 driven by the gear 20.
A hanger 32, of which there may be one at each side of the frame 10, is secured at its lower end to the straps 27 and at its upper end to the arm 33, which arm 33 is operated by the hand-lever 34 to raise or lower the bar 28, the arm 33 and hand-lever 34 forming a bell-crank lever as shown in Figure 1. The hand-lever 34 is locked in any desired position within its range of movement by means of the quadrant-rack 35, plunger 36 and handle 37.
Mode of operation.
The elements 29 and 30 as shown and described are adapted to the surface treatment of the road under conditions of irregularity of surface which cannot be dealt with by any of the ordinary appliances now known and used in the art. The rigid or inflexible element 29 serves as a strike-off and chopping member, its rapid reciprocation serving to fill up depressions in the road surface, and also has a tamping action at the rear end of its stroke.
The flexible member 30 has a slapping and smoothing action and serves to make smoother the surface just treated by the element 29.
The frame 10 may be provided with other operative mechanism for the treatment of the road surface, as desired; but my present invention has to do only with the described front-end mechanism.
The herein-contained disclosure is intended to be explanatory of a preferred embodiment of my invention, and the described mechanism may be modified or altered in various details without departure from my invention as defined in the following claims.
Olaims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a finishing machine in combination with a traveling frame, a bar having a front inflexible element and a rear flexible element; means for adjusting said bar to bring said front and rear elements into contact with the work, means for locking said bar in operative position; and means for reciprocating said bar in the direction of the path of travel of the frame.
2. In a finishing machine having a traveling frame, a loa carrying a strike-01f memher and a smoothing member; and means for reciprocating said bar in the direction of the path of travel of the frame.
3. In a finishing machine the combination of a traveling frame; a transverse bar adj ustably mounted at the front of said "frame;
a forwardly-projecting inflexible strikeofl cutter mounted on the bottom of said bar; and a flexible smoothing element having a rear upturned flange mounted on the rear and at the bottom of said bar; With means actuated by the travel of said frame to reciprocate said bar.
