My invention relates to lasts, and in particular to collapsible lasts.
The object of my invention is to provide a collapsible l'astwhich may be irmly held extended and collapsed position and portion collapsed or taten-ded simultaneously. it is' aiilither object of my invention to pr vide last parts of resilient material. Itis my object to provide a lastI so constructed ofsuch material Ythat the material iscoinpressed or yields when the last parts are inoved from expanded to collapsed position and viceversa, Vbecause the distance between the centers of attachment of the linkwhen the rast is in collapsed position is less than the length of the resilient material et the last partsvbetween such centers when the last is moved to extended position, so that the resilient material is compressed when the line joining such points of attachment of the linkpasses over dead center of `the last hinge. ln general, it will be understood that* the center ofthe hinge passes by a line drawn between the centers of the spring pins'which support the link joining the last parts, when the last parts are moved from collapsed-to extendedposition, `or vice-versa. 'The compressiblenature of the wood permits it'to be compressed when the parts pass over the dead center, as the distance between the holes in the ends of the link is less than Athe distance between the hole in the mate- "rialothe last when the" parts movelover the deadcehter. ffr i L,
In this construction there is also provided pins which are adapted to be sprung or deifiected when this dead center is passed, so that either the wood may be compressed, or the pins may be deliected, or both.
It will also be noticed that it is desirable to draw the toe portion into its smallest compass by some positive means which will not project into the t-shaped openings between the last parts, and which will also have the maximum pull upon the. collapsing toe portion to collapse it to the desired degree, or support it in full and extended position.
Referring to the details of the drawings:
l is the toe part having an upper or tongue portion 2, separated from the main toe part by the slot or gap 3.
This tongue portion is provided with its slot in its under-tace as at t, for receiving the upper end et the tongue link 5, which is mounted therein on the pin 6. The lower portion of the toe part is provided with a slot 7. In this slot is mounted an arched link 8 consisting et two parts. Each halt ot this link is provided with end eyes 9 and bulged side portions 10, se that a space lla is provided between the body ot' the link portions, but their ends are brought closely adjacent to one another where they bear upon and are supported by the spring pins l1 and l2, which are` mounted respectively in the toe and'heel parts et the last.
The heel part ot the last is designated 13 and is provided with a slot 14, in which the links operate. The spring pins ll andlQ are preferably so mounted with the last that their ends are lirmly supported by the last material, while the median portions of the pins are permitted to tlex, because the walls ot the last are cut away as at 15. rlhe last parts are joined together by a joint consisting ot a concave portion 1G in the toe part and a convex portion 17 in the heel part. This convex portion Xtends something more than 180 degrees. A third pin i8 is located in this convex portion to one side et the center thereoi2 and upon this pin is mounted the link 5, which is also located between the two parts ot the link 8 in the space lla, so that this link can freely operate without engagement with the link S, but in cooperation therewith and in synn chronisni with the moveu'ients ottl the rest et the last.
lt will thus be seen that as the parts are arranged the holes in the wood receiving vthe pins ll and lf2 are further apart than the holes in the ends o the metal link 8. This provides suiiicient resistance to the passage ot dead center so that the parts are maintained in extended or collapsed position, as desired.
t will be understood that I do not desire to conine myseltl to mere details nor to specie materials, but comprehend within my claims such modilications which may be necessary tor the `adaptation of the invention te varying conditions.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. ln a last, a heel part and a collapsible toe portion having a tongue, said heel and ioe parts being hinged to one another, means to pivotally join said heel and toe parts to one another, and a link attached to said tongue portion and heel part to connect them to one another, whereby when the last is collapsed the toe portion will be collapsed also.
ln a last, a toe portion, a heel portion, said toe portion being divided into a main part and a tongue part adapted to be moved away troni ene another, or drawn to one another, a hinge between the toe portion and heel portion, a link joining the heel portion and the main part ot the toe portion, and a second link joining the tongue portion and the heel portion, whereby when the last is collapsed the tongue portion will also be collapsed.

In a last, a heel part having a cut-away face and a semicircular projection, a toe part having a corresponding concave portion and a collapsing tongue portion, so that the parts may rock with respect to one another, a link connecting said toe and heel parts, pins connecting` said link to the respective parts, the distance between the centers of said pins in collapsed or fully extended position being less than the distance through the material of the last between such centers when the parts pass over dead center, and a link connecting the tongue and heel portions to draw down the tongue portion when the last is collapsed, said link connecting the tongue to the heel being connected to the heel in the semicircular projecting portion on the heel, off the center thereof.

In a last, a heel portion, a toe portion, a joint therebetween to permit the parts to rock on one another about a common axis, a collapsing tongue portion, a link connecting the heel and toe portion, yielding pins in said heel and toe portions connecting the ends of the link to the heel and toe portions and so mounted in said heel and toe portions as to be permitted to flex when the parts pass over dead center, and a tongue link connecting said tongue and heel portion.
17. In a last, a heel portion, a toe portion, a joint therebetween to permit the parts to rock on one another about a common axis, a collapsing tongue portion, a link connecting the heel and toe portion, yielding pins in said heel and toe portions connecting the ends of the link to the heel and toe portions and so mounted in said heel and toe portion as to be permitted to flex when the parts pass over dead center, and a tongue link connecting said toe and heel, the point of connection of the tongue link on the heel being above a line drawn between the centers of the spring pins, when the last is collapsed.

In a last, a toe part, a heel portion, a collapsing tongue portion, a link connecting said toe and heel portions, a second link connecting said tongue and heel portions, and spring pins supporting said first mentioned link, the ends of said spring pins being supported by the last parts which are cut away adjacent the central portions of said pins to permit of the flexing thereof, the interior of said toe, heel and tongue portions being slotted to receive said links.
19. In a last, a heel part, a toe part, a collapsing tongue part, a semicircular projecting portion on said heel, and a corresponding concave portion on said toe to form a rocking joint between the parts, a link connecting .said parts, spring pins mounted in the respective parts to support said link, the last parts being cut away to permit of the flexing of said links, and a tongue link connecting the heel and tongue to draw down the tongue when the parts are collapsed, the parts being so arranged that the excess of material of the last between the spring pin centers, when the last parts pass over dead center, will cause said pins to be flexed by the link when the parts pass from expanded to collapsed position and vice versa.

In a last, a heel part, a toe part, a collapsing tongue part, a semicircular projecting portion on said heel, and a corresponding concave portion on said toe to form a rocking joint between the parts, a link connecting said parts, spring pins mounted in the respective parts to support said link, the last parts being cut away to permit of the flexing of said links, a tongue link connecting the heel and tongue to draw down the tongue when the parts are collapsed, the parts being so arranged that the excess of material of the last between the .spring pin centers, when the last parts pass over dead center, will cause said pins to be flexed by the link when the parts pass from expanded to collapsed position and vice versa, the link connecting the toe and heel part consisting of two members having closely adjacent ends and separated side walls, .so that the tongue link can pass therebetween freely, said tongue link being connected to the heel on the joint portion, and so located on the projecting portion of the heel joint that while carried by the heel, it is within the area of the toe and moves with respect to the toe so as to remove the tongue with respect to the toe.
