WASHING MACHINE.
Application led March 24, 1924. Serial No. 701,418.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. EvEnn'I'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing Machines, of which the following is a speelcatin. u
My invention relates to improvements 1n washing machines and more iparticularly to the door arrangement thereo the object of the invention being to provide a simple, elficient door arrangement for such machines. Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations andarrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by i reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a side view of a washing machine equipped with a door arrangement embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a detail face View of the door in the washingl chamber proper,
Fig. 3 is a partial ilace view corresponding with. Fig. 1, and.
Fig. d is asection taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3 but showing doors in open positions.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a spherical outer casing 5 having an upwardly swinging door 6 giving access thereto. The door 6 is arranged to be locked in closed position by means of swinging bolts -7 engaging through slotted lugs 8 on the sides of said door as shown. 'llhe door 6 is also provided with a central supplemental peep door 9 which may be readily opened to obtain a view of the interior of the washing machine. l
riihe door 6 is mounted to swing by means of spaced arms 10 secured to said door and,
mounted to swing freely on a rocker shaft 11 mounted in brackets 12 secured to the top of the casing 5 adjacent the door opening, said door beting free to swing and permit the rocker shaft 11 to swing independently thereof. A suitable rest 13 is provided on the top of the casing 5 to support the door 6 11p convenient open position 'as shown in rotating perforated spherical washing chamber 14 is mounted in casing 5 and provided with an upwardly swinging door 15 adapted and arranged to swing through the door opening in casing 5; The door 15 is provided with spring latches 16 ofany usual or desired construction and is mounted to swing on hinges 17. The door 15 also carries v astrap 18 adapted and arranged to engage a hook 19 secured to the rocker shaft 11 to lock the door 15 in open position as indi-v cated in Fig. 4. The rocker shaft 11 is provided with a crank handle 20 for manipulating the same.
By this arrangement both doors may be' titiy specific form and arrangement of the parts constitutes a simple and effective one for the purpose.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into edect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Havlng'described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l
1. A washing machine comprising an outer casing; a washing chamber mounted to rotate in said casing; a door for said casing; a pivotal mounting for said casing door; a door for said washing chamber; a
pivotal mounting for said washing chamber door so positioned and arranged as to permit the door to swing through the door opening in said casing; and a lock for said chamber door mounted on the pivotal mounting of said casing door and arranged to engage said chamber door when opened, substantially as described.
2. A washing machine comprising an outer casing; a washing chamber mounted to rotate in said casing; a door for said casing; a rocker shaft mounted on said casing; a loose pivotal mounting for said door on said rocker shaft; a hook on said rocker shaft; a door for said washing chamber arranged to casing; and means on said Washing chamber door arranged to eng e the hook on said rocker shaft to look said Washing chamber in open position, substantially as described.
3. A 'Washing machine comprising an outer casing; a washing chambermounted to rotate in said casing; a door for said casing; a rocker shaft mounted on said casing; spaced arms secured to said door and loosely pivoted on said rocker shaft; a hook on said rocker shaft bet-Ween said arms; a door for said Washing chamber arranged to swingl n through the door opening in said casing;
and means on said washing chamber door arranged to engage the hook on said rocker shaft to lock said Washing chamber door in open position, substantially as described.
4. A washing ymachine comprising an outer casing; a Washing chamber mounted to rotate in said casing; a door for said casing; a rocker shaftfmounted on said casing; spaced arms securedto said door and loosely pivoted on said rocker shaft; a hook on said rocker shaft between said arms; a door for said Washing chamber .arranged to swing through the door opening in said-casing; means on said Washing chamber door arranged to engage the hook on said rocker shaft to lock said Washing chamber door in open position; and a crank arm on said rocker shaft for operating the same, substan tially as described.
5. A washing machine comprising an outer sphericalcasing; a spherical Washing chamber mounted to rotate in said casing; an upwardly swinging door for said casing; a rocker shaft mounted on said casing adjacent said door; spaced arms secured tol said door and'loosely pivoted on said rocker shaft; a hook on said rocker shaft between said arms; a cra-nk handle for operating said rocker shaft; a door for said Washing chamber pivoted to swing through the door opening in said casing; and a strap on said Washing chamber Vdoor adapted and arranged to be engaged by said hook on said rocker shaft, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification.
