" UNITED STATES ratealeg PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIE F. WELLS .AND OLIVER C. WHITLING, OF BRYANT, OKLAHOMA; SAID WHITLING ASSIGNOB, lLO SAID WELLS.
TRAVELING VALVE.
Application filed May 10,
f barrel of an oil well;
A further object of the invention is the provision of packing which does not require a sleeve to hold it in place when the valve is being inserted in the well tubing.
In the accompanying drawings, we have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View through 4the valve,
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view on line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a similar view on line 3-3 of Figure 1, and,
Figure 4 is a similar view on line 1 -'4f of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a valve cage which is provided with a threaded projection 2 at its upper end, adapted to be secured to a sucker rod. A valve seat 3 is arranged at the bottom of the cage, the valve seat being removable as described in our copending application Serial No. 712,482, filed May 10, 192A A ball valve l is arranged within the cage and adapted to engage the seat. A cylin drical member 5 is arranged beneath the cage, the upper end of the cylindrical member being provided with external threads adapted to engage internal threads formed on the lower end of the cage. This member is provided with a flattened portion 6 for the reception of a wrench in assembling and disassembling the valve. Beneath the flattened portion, the cylindrical membery is adapted to receive suitable packing consisting of packing rings 7 which, as shown, are substantially rectangular in cross section. These rings are arranged between lugs or shoulders 8 formed on the exterior of the casing and above the upper ring, there is 1924. serial no. 712,4a1.
provided a shoulder having a beveled face 9. At the bottom of the cylindrical member, there is provided a cage 10` which extends upwardly on the exterior of the casing and is provided with a beveled face ll engaging the lower ring. Between the packing rings, there is provided spacing rings 12 which, as shown, are triangular in cross section, providing beveled or inclined faces 13, adapted to engage the packing rings.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description. The valve is inserted in the well tubing in the same manner as the old style cup valve and the provision Qf a sleeve to hold the packing while the valve is being run into the tubing is unnecessary. The traveling valve is reciprocated in the well tubing in the usual manner by connecting the sucker rod to the upper end 2 of the cage.
It is to be understood that the form of our invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
IVe claim:
l. In a traveling valve, a cage, a cylindrical member depending from the cage,
packing rings arranged on the exterior of said cylindrical member, and triangular shaped spacing rings arranged between said packing rings with one face substantially parallel to theexterior of said cylindrical member and with the edges of said face engaging the adjacent rings.
2. Ina traveling valve, a cage, a cylindrical member depending from the cage, said cylindrical member being provided with spaced lugs on its periphery, packing rings arranged between said lugs, and triangular shaped spacing rings arranged be tween said packing rings.
3. In a traveling valve, an upper cage, a ball valve arranged in said cage, a cylindrical member depending from said upper cage, packing rings arranged on the exterior of said cylindrical member, triangular shaped spacing rings arranged between said packing rings, with one face substantially parallel to the exterior of said cylindrical member and with the edges of said face engaging the adjacent rings and a lower cage W rings arranged between said lugs, triangular shaped spacing rings arranged over said lugs between said packing rings, and a lower Cage secured to the bottom of said cylindri- Cal member and engaging said lower packing ring.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
LOUIE F. VELLS. OLIVER C. WHITLING.
