PATENT ,'o'FFIcE.
I LOCOMTIV-SMOKE-BOX STRUCTURE.
Application led March-31, 1925. Serial No. 19,618.
To all whom t may concern.: I
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. BEAN, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident'J of West Haven, in the county of New Haven `and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Locomotive-Smoke-Box Structures, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, llike characters 50 nuts' 12 to draw the llanges together.
Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, and to the embodiment of theinvention which is selected for exemplication, the smoke-box, instead of being built up of sheet metal and. other fabricated shapes, as is now' the Vcommon practice, is composed of a plurality ofv cast metal sections, herein two complementary castings 4 and 5, and these sections, in the present instance, abut `along lines extending .lengthwise ofthe smoke-box, herein `in a horizontal plane A'. The upper lsection presents a smoke-stack opening 6', and the lower section presents an exhaust nozzle opening 7, the latter 'extending through a base 8, for attachment to a usual cylinder saddle not shown herein. The upper and `lower sections present anges 9 and 10, best shown in Fi 2, along opposite sides of theY smoke-box, or the attachment of the sections to each other by appropriate fastening elements, herein bolts 11, which extend through the anges and are provided with abutments` are on the interior of the smoke'- box, where the'yare outof the way and are not exposed to the elements., The external surface is thus left perfectly smooth.
In the present example, one of the sec-- tions, herein the lower section, presents a In the present-example, the flanges and their recess 13, which receives a projection 14 presented by the upper section. These inter- Vfitting parts position the sections with relation to each other. One. of the 'anges, here- 60 in the flange 10, presents a shallowl recess or depression 15, the eifect of which is to cause the clamping pressure to be concentrated along -two narrow surfaces between which the'clamping bolts are situated. By this 65 means, a tight joint is easily obtained.
One of the complementary castings, herein the upper section 4, presents .integral steam pipes 16, having passages 1.7 from the interior to the exterior of the smokebox. j Each of these pipes in the present example-is formed partly within and partly without the smoke-box.` Its internal and ex.- ternal port-ions present seats 18 and 19, herein beveled or chamfered to receive cor- 75.
respondingly shaped surfaces of the internal and external surfaces of the lsteam pipes which are to be attached thereto, while flanges 20 and 21 are provided for theJ at tachment of the usual steam pipes by studs,
n ot shown, threadedinto the iianges.
Aboutth'e external portionsof the steam pipes, the casting presents an lntegral flangel 22. for the convenient attachment of the usual lagging and jacketing about the ex- 3.5'
ternal portion ofthe steam piping.v
Referring again to Fig. 1, the complementary castings in the present example are provided with integral projections 23 and 24, which together constitute a support for a generally upright dcflector of any appropriate construction, not sho-wn herem. `The lower section is provided with a similar integrally formed projection 25 for a generally` lhorizo-ntal deflector of any approprlate construction, not shown herein. Similarly, the
upper and lower castings are provided with integral projections 26 and 27, whlch tojgether constitute a support for any appropriate spark-netting, not shown herein..
Having thus described one embodiment of the invention, but without limiting myself thereto, what I claim-and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. A locomotive smoke-box structure comprising, in combination, two complementary castings abutting in a plane extendinglengthwise'of the smoke-box structure, and fastening elements securing said castings together. f
2. A locomotive smoke-box structurecomprisng, in combination, two complementary lengthwise of the smoke-box structure, said castings abutting in a plane extending' lengthwise of the smoke-box structure, said.
opening, and fastening elements which force the abutting surfaces of said castings to-l gether.
4. A locomotive smoke-box structure comprising, in combination, two complementary castings abutting in a plane extending lengthwise of the smoke-boxstructure, one of said castings presenting a base for attachment to a cylinder saddle, and fastening elements which secure said castings gtogether. v
5. A locomotive smoke-box comprising, in combination, a plurality of complementary cast sections abutting along lines extending lengthwise of the smoke-box, and means to secure said sections together.
6. A locomotive smoke-box comprising, in combination, apliirality of complementary cast sections abutting along lines extending lengthwise of the smoke-box, said sections Abeing provided with integral flanges, and
means to secure the flanges of one section to the fianges of another section.
7. A locomotive smoke-box structure comprising, in combination, an upper and a lower section abutting in a plane contain-v ing the longitudinal axis of the smoke-box structiire, said sections presenting fianges, and bolts extending through said flanges and securing said sections together.
8. A locomotive smoke-'box structure comprisin in combination, an upper and a` lower 'section abutting in a plane extending sections presenting internal flanges, and fastening elements extending through said Hanges and securing said sections together.
9. A locomotive smoke-box structure, comprising, in combination, an upper anda lower section presenting fianges abutting in a plane extending lengthwise of the smokebox structure, and fastening elements connectingisaid Hanges and securing-'said sec .tions together.
10. A locomotive smoke-box structure comprising, iii combination, an upper and a lower section abutting along lines extending lengthwise of the smoke-box structure, one of said sections presenting a recess and the other a projection received in said recess to position said sections with relation to each other, and means Ato secure said sections together.
11. A locomotive 4smoke-box comprising, in combination, a plurality of complementary castingsabutting along lines extending lengthwise of the smoke-box, said castings having integral internal projections pi'esenta complementary castings, said upper casting presenting integral steam pipes having pas sages from the interior to the exterior.
' l5. A locomotive smoke-box structure comprising, in eombination,.upper and lower complementary castings, said upper casting v presenting integral, laterally disposed steam pipes having passages from the interior to the exterior. n
In testimony whereof, I have `signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM L. BEAN.
