A. ASHBY POWER PRESS GUARD Filed Marcnv, 1925 INVENTOR'.
Patented Aug. l8, 19525.
UNITED STATES ALBERT ASHBY, OF PECKHAM, ENGLAND.
POWER-PRESS GUARD.
Application filed March '7, 1925. Serial No. 13,780.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT ASHBY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Peckham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power-Press Guards, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to guards for power presses and has for its object to prevent injury to the hands of the operator or machine minder when such presses are in action. I
My invention has particular reference to that kind of press guard comprising a pivotally mounted guard plate or shield which is automatically swung in front of the tool during the downward stroke of the ram and automatically returned to its originalposition on the upward stroke of the ram, the edg of the guard plate or shield being provided with a helical spring to prevent injury to the hands of the operator.
According to the present invention a continuous oscillatory to-and-fro movement of the shield in front of the tool, so long as the press is in action, is positively effected by means of rollers, carried by a member fixed to the ram, that engage with arc-shaped surfaces on one of the arms of a pivoted L-shaped lever and thereby oscillate said lever, th other arm of which is connected to the pendulum guard or shield.
A guard constructed according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters relate to corresponding parts throughout of the press is rigidly attached one of the horizontal flanges Z) of a member 0 formed as a Z-shaped bracket the other horizontal flange (1 of this member carrying the bolts 6 on which the rollers f are rotatably mounted to rotate freely between the flange (Z and the bar 9 that is fixed to the flange (Z by the bolts 6 (Figures 5 and 6). Pivotally mounted at h to one side of the press frame is the Lshaped lever 2', the end of one arm j of this lever extends into the space between the flang 0? of the member 0 and the bar 9 and is provided with the arc-shaped surfaces Z5 that contact with the rollers whereby as the ram a and the member 0 carried thereby moves upwards and downwards the lever i will be oscillated on its pivot h.
The other arm Z of the L-shaped lever i is connected by means of the bar m to the arm n of the pendulum guard or shield 0 that is pivotally mounted on the bracket 77 fixed to the press frame on the side opposit to that on which the lever i is pivoted.
It will now be clear that the oscillatory movements of the lever 2', caused by the ram as previously described, will be conveyed to the pendulum arm a through the bar m and that the guard or shield 0 will therefore be continuously oscillated or given a to-andfro movement in front of th tool so long as the press is in action.
By means of the slot 1 in the arm n the point of connection of the bar m to this arm may be adjusted so as to accommodate the guard to alterations of length of stroke of the ram and the oscillations of th pendulum arm may be varied by means of the adjusting slot r in the bracket '19 to which the said arm is pivotally attached.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a power press of a pendulum guard pivotally mounted on one side of the frame of said press, an L-shaped lever pivotally mounted on the other side of said frame, rollers carried by a reciprocating part of said press and engaging with areshaped surfaces on one of the arms of said L-shaped lever and a connection between the other arm of said lever and said guard.
52. A power press guard comprising a pendulum arm carrying a guard, an L-shaped lever, said arm and said lever being pivoted to opposite sides of the press frame. a mem ber reciprocating with the ram of the press and carrying rollers, arc-shaped surfaces on one of the arms of said L-shaped lever, a bar connecting the other arm of said lever to the pendulum arm and means for varyingthe point of connection of said bar to said arm.
3. A power press guard comprising a faces on one of the arms of said L-shaped lever, a bar connecting the other arm of said lever to the pendulum arm and means for W varying the point of connection of said bar to said arm.
In testimony whereof l allix my signature.
ALBERT ASHBY
