This invention relates to rolling doors and shutters, and its principal object is to provide a new structure for rolling doors and shutters in which are improved all the details of construction which up to the ares enthave been imperfect have caused poor functioning.
The invention provides, generally, iinprovementsin brackets and guides of rolling doors, in looks for the doors, in means which permit better adjustment of the component parts of the door, and in other details of importance in the structure of doors and shutters.

In Figs. 1 and 2' is shown a rolling door made of corrugated plates 1 and slidable between vertical guide rails 2. The door is provided with a shutter 3, of a kind in which the shutter members hang on metallic ribbons 4:, to cover an openingfi in the door 1 and are slidable between recessed guides 6,v
which form the sides of the opening, which guides are connected with vertical bars 7 by means 8 all constituting with horizontal guide bars 9, an articulated system that, does not form part of this invention and is therefore not described in more detail.
The guide rails 2 terminate at the top, as illustrated in Fig. 3, in detail, in plates 10 with their rear edges rounded and their front edges straight. Each plate has a pcripheral border or flange 10 terminating at an extension 10 of the face of the plate, and which extension is closed by a small plate 11, of polygonal shape and of a width the same as the border or flange 10. It is held in position by a screw 12 and a screw 13, to which latter a nut 13 is screwed. The opposite end of screw 13 projects along the plate and has attached a folded metallic plate 14 shaped to follow the outline of the border 10 and fastened by screws 14 to a horizontal flange 15 that projects across the top front part of each plate 10, the object of this plate being later explained. In the straight front part of each plate 10, are two section members 16, having the shape of an inverted U. Within members 16 are fixed corrugated plates 18, for covering the upper part of the door, the lower edge of the plate being supported by small support blocks 19, lodged in recesses 19, in the lower parts of members 16, and held by bolts 20, passing through holes in the inner faces of the front flange 10 of plates 10, and projecting beyond the bracket blocks and into recesses 19" in line with the grooves 19, and attaching nuts thereto which secure perfect attachment of the parts, and make it impossible to remove, from the outside, the corrugated plate 18.
The connection of the plates 10 to the door opening, is obtained by means of connection arms as illustrated in Fig. 27, whereby the door remains outside of the plane of the door opening. This connection arm consists of a small plate in the shape of a T, with .its head and stem positioned in different planes by bending the stem at its point of connection to the head. In the head are horizontal slots 21, and in its stem is a hole 21". The stem is inserted at the back of an aperture 22, in the front top part of each plate 10, and through hole 21", receives a bolt 23 that holds it to the bracket plate 10. The position of the bracket plates 10 is then adjustable by means of screws in the slots 21 in the head of connection arms 21, which are fixed to the sides of the door opening.
If it is desired to position the roll formed by the door, in the plane of the door opening, the type of connection arm illustrated in Fig. 28 is used, which same consists of a small plate 24 in the form of a T, but folded at an angle at the union point of its branches. In its head are slots 24, and in its stem a slot 24, the stem passing through the aperture 22, to be held by screws to the plate 10.
Between the plates 10 is mounted, in brackets 26, horizontal axle 25 the brackets 26 being secured to the inner middle parts of plates 10, by screws 25, and provided with notches 28, whereby to adjust between them, the seat 25 of the brackets 26, the ends of the axle 25 being pressed therebetween by tension bolts 27 provided with nuts 29.
On the axle 25 is mounted devices for rolling the door 1 and the shutter 3. The door 1 is rolled around two drum rollers loosely mounted in hubs 31, at the ends of axle 25. These hubs are detailed in Fig. 15, having at their ends, longitudinal grooves 31, and at their centers an car 31 with a horizontal opening 31. The hubs are fixed to the axle 25 by means of half collars 32, fixed at each of their ends surrounding the axle 25, and fastened together by bolts 33. Each is provided with a tooth 32, to enter into one of the grooves 31 of hub 31. The roller drums of the door each contain a cylindrical box 34, with a central opening 34, to loosely receive a hub 31, ear 31 being fixed in the interior of the box. On said boxes around the openings 34, and leaving an annular flange 34, around the same, are cylindrical open ended extensions 35, in the edges of which are longitudinal grooves 35. Inside of each extension 35 is a washer 36 of fibrous material which replaces the ball bearings formerly used, which washer is pressed against the annular flange 34", by a spring washer 37.
The boxes 34, contain leaf springs 33, rolled in spiral form, (Fig. 19) each inner end being fixed to a horizontal pin 39 passing through the side walls of the boxes.
At the rear of the boxes 34, are fastened, by means of pin bolts 41, clasps 41, formed of a plate curved to follow the outline of the box 34 toward the front, and having its free end bent rearwardly in the form of a claw, to receive the top edge of the door. This top edge is composed of a narrow plate 42, running the entire width of the door and having its lower edge 42, formed to engage the top edge of the corrugated plate 1, that constitutes the door, and its upper edge doubles over to engage the claw.
Between the roller drums receiving the body of the door. and on the axle 25, are two roller drums of lesser diameter for rolling the shutter.
These drums consists of a hub 43. of the same form as the hub 31. which is also hold to the axle by means of collars 1. The drum includes a cylindrical box 44, which contains a leaf spring 45, and has, around a central opening receiving hub cylindrical extensions 46 and 4?, with open extremities having longitudinal grooves 46 and 47, which grooves receive a tooth of a collar 43.

Around the inner extension' fi, is formed a second cylindrical"extension 50, which leaves an annular space ,and is provided with vertical grooves 50, its sides being prolonged beyond the sides ofthe extension 47. Between the corresponding extensions 50 of the inner roller drums is mounted on the axle alarge hub or sleeve 51, which terminates in small" plates 51 from each of which project two surface coupling cylinders 51, having longitudinal grooves 51 inthem to match grooves 50 of the extensions 50, when placed inposition telescopically, the members 51" admitting through the.coinc'i ding groovesfiO and 51". The screws 52, which adjustably'connect member 51 With'the inner drums, and permit varying the drum positions according to the"width of theshutt'er. r V

The rolling deviceis"hidden by a cover 59, of cylindrical form, Whose ends are fixed inrec'esses' formed between the rims -10 of the plates 10, and 'rib's 60 on thebracket inner faces, which ribs are prolongations of the flangeslz), and runparallelto the rims 1t), terminatingnear the part 10.
The lateral rail guides for the door, are held by means of brackets such as illustrated in Fig; 29 and each includes a'plate '61, of angular shape, having 'wings,in one of which are horizontal slots 61", and in'the' bpposite of which are'vertical slots 61", said wings being joined together by lateral integral extensions 61" which are prolonged beyond thewing of. the plate thatcontains the slots 61.
Each bracket including plateGl reStswith its projections 61", againstthe innerside ot each guide rail 2, and isthere fixed by means ofFscrews 62, of thekind shown in Fig, 26 passing through slots 61. The screw has a head in-the form of a truncated pyra mid-of rectangular-base,and such screws are preferably usedto secnre'the' various parts of this construction of door and shutter. In use, the head of the screw rests in depres sions in theinner face of the" inner side of the rail 2, and projects through the grooves 61, of theplate 61, and receives a nut 62", thus drawing the extensions 61 tightly in to place.
In case it is not desiredtliat'thedoor renain'in a vertical plane on being unrolle'd', but that, at a given height, it deviate back- 'ard,inorder to allow extra space; t-heguide rails 2 are cut oil at the point chosen, and a switch branch 64', 64, of recessed "section of the same Wltltl'l as the rails 2, and in line therewith, is connected to the cut oit'"e1id. The switch branches can be arranged in any desired direction.
The butting rail joints have matching recesses 64. (Figs; 22 and 24;) connected'by means ot a joint 66, 23) consisting of "a plate, iolded' in the form of a U and with 'its edges folded inwardly and presenting on one of its sides, openings 65", countersunk in the inner face oftheplate. These plates are positioned withtheir folded edges doubled toward the insideto complete the edges of the rails where interrupted bythe recesses 6d, therehaving first been passed through the openings 65, from inside to outside,"screws 62 whose headslodge in the countersunkportions of openings 65. The screw ends receive the connection plates (31, which secure'the rails 2 tothe sides of the door space.
Theplates 61 can be replaced by arms 67 and 68, such as illustrated'in Figs. 30and 31 dependihg on whether the door is to be withoutthe plane of the door space, or in such plane.
As maybe easily understood, the connecting elements for the supplei'nentary rail,
can be easily removed Whenever desired, and replaced by sect-ions 01- straight rails connectedtothecut ends of rails 2'.
As said before, the shutter 3 is suspended by ribbons 4t, and is providedwith guide rails 6, and means for connecting the same, to form the framefor theshutter. For the topedge of space 5,to be covered byshutter 3,is a ,lintel formed of an inverted U plate 69, fastened between plates 70 and 71 secured along the width of the shutter, to the faces of the corrugated sheet, forming the door. a
In" thelintel' is lodgedtlie top end of a p bar 7, that is connected to the sides 6, of the shutter, as illustrated in Figs. 7 and 34.
The shutter is made of beaded plates, joined together, and the lowermost plate, designated as 7 2, has a folded edge 79., cut at the center, 72, to receive a short a le 73. To axle 7 3 is lxed a piece, illustrated in Fig. 37, composed of a plate in the form of a pedal 7st, having at the back, an ear 7 1 in the form of a handle and connected at a very obtuse angle, with the pedal 74 by a piece having an opening through which runs the axle 73, whose ends lodge in the cut ends of the bead 72. A leaf spring 75, (Fig. tixed by a rivet to the plate 72, rests with its free end across the handle 7 d, to hold it. in desired normal position.
At the lower edge of opening 5, at the threshold76, is a narrow plate 77 running the whole width of the shutter and having beaded edges, and adn'iitting through its outer edge a pivot 78, which permits the plate to rotate toward the inside or to remain in an extended horizontal position (Fig. 35) when the shutter is closed, and thus prevent any crevice between the lower edge of the shutter, and the threshold 76. The plate 77, upon the door being rolled up, becomes suspended, as seen in the dotted line (Fig. 35).
The door, as well as the shutter, can be made ott corrugated metal sheet, or of beaded sheet joined together. In the case illustrated, the door is made of corrugated metal sheet 1, and the shutter is made 0t hinged plates with joints reentorced by links 79, detailed in Figs. 38 and 39, each having its lateral sides convex on the exterior and concave on the interior, to aid in rolling, the ends being rounded and with pierced open ing 79, and at the middle part of its exterior face, a projection 7 9".
These links are superposed laterally at the heads of the articulated plates, their openings 79 coinciding with the end openings of the beads of the joints, and connected together by metallic clamps 80, placed between each two, and fixed to the inner faces of the articulated plates.
'lhe plate 72, is reinforced by a clamp, such as illustrated in Fig. 21, consisting of a small plate 81, reduced laterally to leave a part enlarged, to the extremity of which is fixed a bracket 83 carrying a pulley 83 loosely rotatable therein, the bracket having an extension 82 provided with a tongue 83 directed in the same direction as the body 81, and lodgable in the bead 72, of plate 72 of the shutter, the plate 81 being fixed to the inner face of plate 7 2, by means of rivets 8 1.
In the sides of the door, as well as those of the shutter, antitriction means are provided, in order to obtain smooth sliding in the movement along the guide rails 2 and 6,
whereby the least pressure is suflicient to operate the door and shutter thus provided.
Such means is illustrated in Figs. 17, 18, 19 and 20. In Fig. 19, is a small plate 85,
reduced laterally to form an opening having at its end a bracket 86, with a pulley wheel 87, mounted loosely therein, and in the same plane as the body 85.
In Fig. 529 is represented a bracket plate 88, having at its end, a loosely mounted pulley S9, placed in a plane normal to the body 88. The plates 85 and 88 are alternately secured between the corrugations of plate 1 at the lateral edges, and in tric tional contact with the rails 2, thus reducing friction and preventing lateral movements and shaking of the door, which would intertere with its raising and lowering.
I also provide means for closing the door which effectually prevents the door and shutter from being opened by unauthorized persons, and consisting of horizontal latches 99, in bearings 90, secured to the rear face ot the door, and adapted to its corrugations, the latches being adjustable in sockets 91, in the lateral guides 91, of the door. I also provide look means 93, which hold the shutter firmly in its closed position.
The lock means 93 consists, (Fig. 7) of an ordinary lock member 94;, mounted either on the shutter, or, it the door has no shutter, at the center 01 the door and at a convenient height. The mechanism of this lock on being operated by a special key, projects bars 95 outwardly and with them, pins 96, guided between members 97, fixed on the inner tace ot the shutter or door. These pins engage insockets 98 in the guide rails 6 or 2.
The advantages gained in this manner, are evident, since this look can be used for a door of any width, without anything further than disconnecting the pins 96 and replacing them by others of the necessary length. For example, although the lock is shown applied to a shutter used in a fold ing door, this look could be equally well used in a door having no shutter, by using pins 96 of sutlicient length, and sockets in the door guide rails.
The operation of the door and shutter, is as follows:
Assuming the door 1, rolled around the roller drums 34, and the shutter 3 rolled around the drums 1 1, without any extra thickness resulting due to the lock means 93, which has one of its sections, due to the clearance given by the hub 51, between the small plates 51. In this position, by means of a bar provided with a hook at its end one of the bolts in the lower edge of the door is engaged and pulled downwardly whereupon the door slides smoothly down between the rails 2, Without necessitating any great force, due to the antitriction pulleys 87 and 89 with which the sides are provided. The door once unrolled, and the latches 9O closed, the rails 6 of the shutter 3 are fixed, by first introducing the upper ends of connection bars 7 in the recessed lintel 69 of the frame, and then connecting bars 7 ward pull on the shutter by means of engaging a hook in the handle 74, runs the shutter down between the. rails 6. p
The plate 77, which is in a vertical position, rotates inwardly on the axle 78, and the clutch and pedal 74, 7d, rotate around pivot 73, against the tension of spring 75., so as to assume the position illustrated in Fig.32. It isthen simple to push the latch downward, resting one foot on the pedal 74, and provide a perfect closure on the plate 77.
lVIaintaining'the pedal 74: in the horizontal position, serves as a stop against the top post of the shutter, only when the shutter is opened.
If the supplementary rails 65, be used, (Fig. 3) it is sufficient to guide the door between the same on reaching the proper point.
To roll up the door, the shutter 3 is rolled up, by first rotating the pedal and handle 7474, until in the position shown in Fig. 33, which rotates the plate 77, to the position illustrated by doted lines, in Fig. 85, and then giving the shutter an upward impulse by means of the bar previously mentioned, or similar means.
The plates 54, against which the links 7 9 rub lessen the speed of the rollin at the end, thus preventing prejudicial shocks to the door.
The lateral rails 6 of the shutter, and the connection bars 7', are then folded onto the bottom post of the door, the latches 90 are released, and the door is pushed upward, it being observed that although the motion is vigorous, the last part of the rolling is slow and smooth due to the friction exercised on the door by the brake plates 14, inside of the plates 10.
The closing plate 11, can be dismounted by removing the screws 12, and nuts 13, to facilitate repairs to the door. This is done by first rolling up the door and taking it out through the hole in the bracket normally closed by plate 11.
It is evident that within the principles of construction shown, distinct changes can be made without departing from the principles of the invention.
1 now claim:
1. An apertured door, means for rolling the door, a rolling shutter for covering the door aperture, means for rolling the shutter, the shutter being hung from the top of the door, said shutter being on the inner face of the door, in combination with two brackand rails 6, by members 8. A down ets, adjusting meansfor the brackets, and friction brakes in the brackets for retarding speed of rolling of the door and the shutter.
2. In a door opening, lateral guides at the sides of the opening, brackets connected to the upper ends of the guides, comprising plates widened at the back and presenting a straight front, a guide at the front of each bracket, a plate in the guides and covering the upper part of the door opening, demountable blocks in the guides for supporting the plate, connecting arms for adjust-ably attaching the brackets in the door opening, a curved sheet between the brackets, a screw controlling the position of the sheet, an axle mounted in the brackets, door rolling means on the axle, means for locking the rolling means and axle together, a rolling door connected to the door rolling means, and a cover connected to the brackets and shielding the door rolling means.
3. A rolling door guide, comprising, vertical, parallel, spaced spindles, a substantially inverted Y-shaped guide connected by its stem to each of the vertical guides, and extension guides connected to the arms of the Y guide, whereby to form a main guide, and a switch guide for a folding door.
4-. A rolling door guide, comprising, a main guide and a switch guide connected to the main guide, and adjustable slot and screw connecting means for attaching the door guide to a door way.
5. A rolling door and shutter comprising, lateral guide rails, a rolling door within the rails, bracket-s surmounting the guide rails, a horizontal axle mounted in the brackets, two roller drums mounted toward the ends of the axle for rolling the door, each roller drum including, a hub, a cylindrical box on the hub and having lateral cylindrical exten: sion around the hub, a fiber washer and a spring washer in each extension, a spiral spring inside the box having one end connected to the hub and the other end to the box, collars holding the hub rigid with the axle, connecting means on the exterior of the box for fastening the door thereto, and key means for rigidly interconnecting the box and its hub.
6. A rolling door and shutter according to claim 5, shutter roller drums mounted on said axle between said roller drums, and constructed similarly to said roller drums, an adjustable hub spacer between the shutter roller drums, an aperture in said door, a shutter for covering the aperture, metal strips suspending the shutter from the top of the door and connected to the shutter roller drums, and friction plates bearing against the strips and acting as brakes thereon.
7 In rolling doors and shutters, brackets for holding door and shutter rolling means,
each bracket comprising a plate having a straight front part, and a widened, rounder back part, a peripheral flange on the plate discontinued at the lower rear portion, a removable flange attached to the plate where the peripheral flange discontinues, a srrew in the removable flange, a nut holdin the screw to the flange, and a flexible sheet, positioned between the brackets and adjustable by means of the flange screws to act as a friction brake "for a rolling door.
8. A guide according to c a 3, each rail connection comprising, notched rail ends, a bent U-shaped clamp placed around the butting rail ends and filling the notched portions, and screws connecting the rail ends and clamp, and having their heads pos1- tioned inwardly.
9. In rolling doors and shutters, a clamp piece for the points of major resistance of a door and shutter, comprising, a plate fixed near the borders of a door and a shutter, a bracket and pulley wheel on the plate, an extension on the plate, and an ear on the extension.
10. An apertured door, a pivoted plate at the base of the aperture rotatable to a horizontal or vertical position, a shutter positioned over the aperture, a handle piv oted to the lower edge of the shutter, and a holding spring fixed to the shutter and bearing against the handle.
11. A rolling door and shutter, means for locking the door and shutter, including, pins mounted horizontally at the sides of the door and sockets secured on the sides of the door, a lock having two pins mounted on the shutter and sockets at the sides of the shutter to receive the pins.
