CRADLE.
Application filed March 6, 1923.
Z all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MIKE ZInarrANsKI, a citizen of Poland, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cradles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cradles and particularly to that type wherein a swingingly mounted cradle has mechanism associated therewith for automatically rocking or swinging the same. I
The primary object of the invention is to provide a cradle wherein a swingingly mounted cradle frame or carriage has an escapement mechanism connection with a shaft that is spring motor operated for effecting swinging movement of the cradle.
ith the above and other objects in view as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a cradle constructed in accordance with the present invention showing the swingingly mounted cradle frame, the power spring associated with a rotatable shaft and the escapement mechanism connection between the shaft and cradle frame,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the cradle.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary end elevational view of the head rail of the cradle frame,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary end elevational view of the swingingly mounted cradle frame and the escapement mechanism associated therewith,
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken on line VV of Fig. 1 showing the spring encircling the power shaft and attached to the escapement wheel,
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view taken on line VIVI of Fig. 1 showing the escapement lever pivotally mounted upon the head frame of the crib, and
Figure 7 is a detail sectional View taken Serial No. 623,128.
on line VII-VII of Fig. 1 showing the opposite end of the spring anchored to the f "ame of the crib.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated a cradle embodyinghead and foot members 1 and 2, connected by side rails 73, while the outer rails of the head member carry cross bars 4, 5 and 6. The foot frame 2 is braced by cross bars 7 and 8 as shown in Fig. 1. A cradle frame is swingingly mounted between the head and footmembers 1 and 2, the cradle embodying side frames 9 and head and foot frames 10 and 11 respectively. As shown more clearly in Figs. 1 and 3, bearings 12 are carried by the head and foot frames 1 and 2 upon the cross bars 4 and 7 respectively, into which bearings 12 studs 13 carried by the head and foot portions of the cradle are freely received thereby providing a free swinging suspension for the cradle frame.
A shaft 14 extending longitudinally of the cradle is journaled in the cross bars 6 and 8 of the head and foot members 1 and 2 respectively, the head end of the shaft 14 extending through the cross bar 4 and being provided with a wrench and upon which a crank handle 15 shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 is adapted to be connected. A coil spring 16 encircles the shaft 14 and has one end thereof anchored as at 17 to the cross bar 8 as shown in Fig. 7, the other end of the spring 16 being anchored as at 18 to the escapement wheel 19 that is keyed upon the forward end of the shaft 14 inwardly of the cross bar 6 as clearly shown in Fig. 5. To place the spring under tension, the shaft 14 is rotated by the crank handle 15 and the gear wheel 20 keyed to the shaft 14 outwardly of the cross bar 6 is adapted to be engaged by the dog 21 carried by the bracket 22 upon the cross bar 6 as shown in Fig. 3.
The connection between the swinging cradle frame and the shaft 14 includes an escapement lever 23 pivotally mounted as at 24 upon the cross bar 5 of the head frame 1, the upper end of the escapement lever being bifurcated as at 25 and inclosing the pin 26 carried by the center rail 27 of the head portion 10 of the swinging cradle, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The lower end of the escapement lever 13 is provided with the usual double pawl construction 28 that cooperates with the escapement wheel 19.
From the above detail description of the device, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, it being noted that the shaft 14 being rotated through the medium of the spring 16, the escapement mechanism interposed between the shaft and cradle, will cause a swinging movement of the cradle.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present in vention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
That is claimed as new is In acradle of the type described, a cradle body including head and foot members, a. cradle frame swingingly mounted in the head and foot members, a longitudinal shaft journaled in the head and foot members directly below and in alinement with the cradle pivot point, a coil spring encircling the shaft and connected at one end to a part of an esca-pement mechanism and at the other end to the foot member for operating the cradle, means for tensioning the spring upon said shaft, escapement mechanism interposed between the cradle frame and power shaft, said escapement mechanism including an escapement wheel keyed to said shaft, a vertical escapement lever pivoted to the head frame at a point in vertical alinement with the cradle pivot point and the power shaft and with the lower end thereof cooperating with the escapement wheel, the upper end of the lever being bifurcated, and a pin carried by the cradle frame immediately below and in vertical alinement with the pivot point of the cradle and projecting between the furcations of the lever.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MIKE ZIEMIAN SKI.
