STAND FORA ELECTRIC IRONS.

Be it known that I, GEORGE B. BATTER- MAN, a` citizen of the United States, residing at New York city in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stands for Electric Irons, of which the following is a. specification.
My invention relates to a stand adapted for supporting electric irons and the like, which is provided with a switch for automatically controlling the current through the i-ron as may be desired.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide meansL for supporting the implement which will insure safety against lire, as well as preventing accidents which are likely to cause injury to the implement; and to provide a pnact-ical device for supporting, the implement when not inv use, which has a self-contained means operable by gravity for shutting off the current when the imp-lement rests thereon, thus insuring .economy as well as safety.
The invention will be described in connectionwith the accompanying drawing which illustrates the preferred structure by means of which thex principles of my invention; may be embodied.

The invention comprisesa rectangular hollow base or tray 1 having its side walls ra-bbeted at the upper inside edge to form shoulders 2. The shoulders of the two op posed sides of the base are formed with alined grooves 3 forming bearings for a transverse pivot rod 4, on which is supported a supporting element or platform 5, the saine being connected with the pivot rod by ears 6 or similar attaching means. The uppermost portion of the pivot rod t is somewhat above the plane of the shoulders 2, so that the platform 5 has a limited rocking movement.
One side of the base is provided bene-ath the platform with a socket 7 which may be connected by suitable connecting wires 8 to Serial No. 603,835.
a source of electric current. has electric connections 9 with a pair of terminals 10 located in the bottom of the tray near one end thereof. The opposite side of the tray is provided with an electric socket 1l which is connected by wires 12 with spring terminals 13 secured to the under side of the platform 5 vertically above the first-mentioned terminals 10. The socket 11 may be connected, by suitable electric con ductors 14, with an electric sad iron 15, or other implement of a similar nature. In some instances, it may be also be desirable to connect the socket 11 with electric conductors 16 which may lead to a signal light 17 located at any suitable point.
It will be noted that the pivot rod l is located at one side of the transverse center of the stand so that the center of gravity of the platform 5 willy be located at one side The socket 7v thereof, and normally, the terminals 13 and i 10 will be held in contact with each other by the weight of the platform. The relative weight of the platform and the iron 15 is such, (however, that when the. latter rests upon the short end of the platform, the weight thereof will be overbalanced and the contact between the terminals will be broken. The surface of the platform is provided with suitable indicia, as shown at 18 and 19, indicating where the iron may be placed to have the current on or off.
The platform 5 may be composedv of any suitable insulating material which is also apoor conductor of heat, such for example, as asbestos. When it 1s desired to use the iron with less heat than would be generated by leaving the current on, the platform 5 may be locked in off position by means of aclipv 20, which is pivoted to the end of the tray, as shown in the dra-wing. form 5 is also preferably provided with an upstanding peripheral flange 21 to prevent the iron from accidentally slipping off or being pushed off from the platform.
From the foregoing description, it will be appreciated that the invention is primarily a safety device. lVhenever the person using the iron wishes to set it down, he can do so without danger of causing fire or damaging the surface on which it rests. At the same time, he will ordinarily set it on the off end of the platform, thus automatically disconnecting the current, which results in greater economy. If, however, the iron is allowed to remain long enough to get too cold, it may be easily pushed to the other end of the platform, whereupon the current will be immediately turned on again. rThe flange on top of the tray also prevents many accidents which are likely to result in breakage of the rheostat or the wires leading thereto` The lock 2O may be very conveniently used withoutturning the switch at the chandelier.
lVhile I have shown specifically one form in which my invention majy7 be embodied, it will be readily understood that various modifications may be made therein, without departing from the principles of the invention as defined by the claims. It will also be understood that any number of these stands may be connected up into one system and be connected to one signal light.
That is claimed is l. rlhe combination of a base having a pair of terminals adapted to be connected to a source of electric current, a support pivoted to said base and having terminals vertically over the first-named terminals and adapted to be connected to an electrically heated implement, the center of gravity of said support being between the pivot and the terminals whereby the latter will be normally held in contact by gravity, the weight of the implement being` sul'licient to swing the support and break the contact when the implement is placed on the side of the support remote from the terminals, and means for locking the support in its olf position regardless of the position of the implement.
2. The combination of a base having a pair of terminals adapted to be connected to a source of electric current, a support pivoted to said base and having a peripheral upstanding flange within which an electriw cally heated implement may be supported, said support having secured to its under side electric terminals located vertically over the first-named terminals and adapted to be con'- nected to the implement, the center of gravity of said support being between the pivot and the terminals whereby the latter will be normally held in contact by gravity, the weight of the implement being sufficient to swing the support and break the contact when the implement is placed on the side of the support remote from said terminals, and a locking device located at one side of the platform pivot for holding the terminals on the platform out of Contact with the terminals in the base.
3. The combination of a hollow base having a pair of terminals adapted to be connected to a source of current, a pivot rod extending transversely within said base, a supporting' platform pivotally mounted thereon and having a peripheral upstanding flange within which an electrically heated implement may be supported, said platform having on its underside terminals located vertically over the first-named terminal and adapted to be connected to the implement, the platform being marked G11 at one side of the pivot, and Off at the other side thereof, said platform being normally operable by gravity to form a contact between the pairs of terminals but operable by the weight of the in'iplement when placed on the Off side to break said contact, and means for positively locking the platform with the terminals out of contact regardless of the position of the implement.
l. rlhe combination with a hollow base having shoulders on the inside at a point below the top thereof, of a platform, means for pivoting the platform to the base above the plane or' said shoulders, a pair of terminals connected to a source of electricity and arranged within the base, other terminals connected to the underside of the platform and arranged above the lirst-named terminals, and a locking device located at one side of the pivot of the platform for holding the terminals on the platform out of contact with the terminals of the base. 1
5. The combination with a hollow base, of a tilting platform, means for pivoting the platform to the base at the top so as to move within the same, terminals carried by the base and connected to a source of electricity, other terminals carried by the platform and adapted to make contact with the lirst-naincd terminals, and a locking device located at one side of the pivot of the platform for holding the terminals out of contact.
