FUNNEL.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KnREKEs, a citizenof the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Funnels, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of this invention is to provide a funnel adapted to all filling purposes. lVith this object in view, the funnel is constructed and designed in such manner as to permit the entire closing of the spout 111 an instant.
Another object is to provide a funnel with an adjustable valve having posts therein whose areas may be lessened or increased by the rotation of a knob accordingly as it is desired to increase or decrease the rate of flow thru the funnel.
These and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevational view of the funnel, the lower portion being shown in section to illustrate the valve mechanism.
Figure 2 is an exterior front elevational view showing the valve operating rod.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of Figure 2, with the valve head removed therefrom.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral indicates a conical shell. The later forms the body of the funnel, and the upper annular edge, at which the body is largest, is turned down or beaded around its entire periphery except at one point. From this point the body of the funnel continues as an integral fiat ear 11 which extends in a horizontal plane and is provided with a relatively small opening, and from this lower edge, a tapering spout 12 extends, said spout being open at both ends. A slight distance above the lower opening of the conical body 10, an annular inclined flange 13 is fitted to the internal surface of the body 10 in a permanent leak-proof manner. Said flange has a central opening 1 1 and at diametrically opposite positions of the latter, rectangular channels 15 are formed. A valve head 16 having a bottom inclined face which normally seats on the surface of the flange, is mounted in the body and has an internal annular shoulder encircling it. On said shoul- 1924. der is mounted an elastic ring 17 whose outer edge is rounded to snugly contact with the wall of the funnel body directly above the flange. Said valve head is provided with a pair of diametrically opposite elongated openings 18 which are superimposed over and register with the channels 15 formed in the conical flange 13. A hole of medium depth is formed axially on the top surface of the valve head and is adapted to receive the stud 19 which projects above the valve head and has a handle knob 20 at its upper end. The entire top surface of the valve head is covered by a disk 21 which encircles the stud 19 and is integral therewith. Said disk is provided with a pair of diametrically opposite radial openings 22 which are of the same outline and area as the openings 18 in the valve head and are adapted to mutually register.
Lifting and lowering of the valve head is accomplished by movement of a stem 23 which has its upper end connected to the bottom of the valve head and passes axially thru the funnel spout 12 and is provided with a return bend 24 at its lower end. The portion 25 which continues from the bend 24, courses parallel to the stem 23 on the outside of the spout 12 and at the upper end of the spout an additional length passes upwardly adjacent the funnel body, being retained in sleeve brackets 26, extends vertically thru the opening in the car 11, and is formed into a finger ring 27 at its upper end.
In use the spout 12 of the funnel, is inserted into the neck of a container and the ring 27 is lifted. By lifting the ring, the stem 23 is raised a corresponding distance, thus lifting the valve head 16 from the flange 13 and a space is created between said valve and flange thru which the liquid may flow. When the level of the liquid has arrived at the desired point, the ring 27 is quickly depressed, thus lowering the valve 16 into contact with the face of the flange 13 in which position the elastic ring contacts with the face of the funnel body and completely stops the flow of liquid thru the spout. The valve is provided with radial openings 18 when it is desired to adjust the rate of flow thru the funnel. When these openings are used, the valve head 16 is firmly seated on the flange 13. These openings 18 are normally covered by a disk 21 in which similar openings 22 are provided. As the disk is an integral part of the centering stud 19, the knob 20 onthe'latter is rotated and the openings in said disk will rotate to the position above the openings 18 in the valve head to partly or entirely uncover the latter openings thru which the liquid is permitted to, flow. By providing member 16 with a plurality of openings 18 which are covered or uncovered by the perforated disk 21, the rate of flow of liquid thru the tunnel may be controlled. When the rate of flowis to be controlled, the valve is seated on the element 13 so that all the liquid is caused to flow thru the openings into the spout 12. Adjustment of the area oftheopenings may be varied thru the cooperation of the disk 21 with the openings 18 provided in the valve 16. This disk 21 is rotated by grasping the knob 20 and turning the same until the desired area of opening shows, after which the funnel is ready for use.
I claim In a funnel, a conical body having a spout at its lower end, an annular inclined flange mounted in said body above the spout, sald flange having a central opening and channels alongside said opening, a valve head, elongated holes insaid valve head superimposed over the flange channels, a stud rotatable in said valve head, a disk integral with said stud having openings therein, said openings being adapted to fully or partly register with the openings in the valve head to permitthe How of liquid thru the funnel when the valve head is lowered, and means attached to said valve head for lifting the latter and a knob on said disk for rotating the latter.
