Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,884, dated September 8, 1874 application filed December 27, 1873.

kegs, and buckets.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan View; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of one end of the machine.
My invention consists in the combination of devices and appliances, as hereinafter set forth and claimed, in which--V A represents a table, upon which the different parts of the machine are mounted. B D are the movable and the stationary heads of the machine. C is the driving-shaft, mounted in bearings C. a cfare the driving and idle pulleys on the shaft C. The movable head, which consists of the two plates or rims B B, connected together by bolts b-or curved arms may be usedis secured to the shaft C by means'of a key in a groove or key-seat, c. N is a lever, vthe arms n n of which engage in a collar, bx, on head B, and by which the head is reciprocated backward and forward on shaft C. The stationary head D consists of an inclosing-ring, within which is fitted, so as to revolve loosely, a rim, D. K is a platform, secured to the bed K by the dovetailcleats J, and adapted to reciprocate therein by means of the screw I, attached to' the under side of the platform K. L L are screw-stops, which limit the movement of the platform K. Attached to a curved way, F', on the platform K, by means of cleats e, is a curved slide or tool-holder, E, which secures the different cutting tools or bits G .fr y z, 8vo., which are all adjustable. F is a handle, and
H a stop, on the slide E. The openings X of the rim or disks B D are beveled, as shown at y', Fig. 2.
The operation of this machine is as follows: The lever N is raised, throwing backward head B on shaft C. The keg is then placed in heads B and D. The lever N is forced down, and the head B forced forward over the keg, and clamping it tightly against the rim Dl of the head D. The machine is then set in motion andl the keg caused to revolve. The slide E is then forced into the keg by handle F, as far as stop H, the tool G turning off the keg upon the inside as the slide is forced forward. As soon as the stop H on the slide F reaches the cleat c, the platform K is drawn forward by means of the screw I, which brings platform K and slide E, containing the tools a: y z, Ste., forward into the chines of the keg. p By this means the keg is chamfered, crozed, and howeled at both ends, the depth of cut being regulated by the screwstops J J. The wheel I is then reversed, running slide E and platform K back, the slide E withdrawn from the keg by the handle F, the machine stopped by running the drivingband on the idle pulley, and the lever N is raised, forcing back head B, which releases the keg from heads B and D.
I am aware of the patent granted to Wm. Brown, July 29, 1873, for machine for dressing and crozing barrels, and do not claim the Vdevice therev shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The curved tool-holder E, arranged to slide in a stationary curved guide, F', which is the continuation of the bilge-curve of the barrel, substantially as described.
` 2. In combination with the curved toolholder E and stationary curved guide F', the knives G :r y z, &c., for chamfering, howeling, crozing, and otherwise finishing the barrel or cask at one operation, substantially as described.
3. In combination with the curved toolholder E F', and platform K, the horizontally-adjusting screw I, as and for -the purposes shown.
4. In combination with the curved toolholder E, the adjustable laterally-sliding platform K, as and for the purposes described.
5. In combination with the laterally-sliding platform K, and adjusting device I,'the ad-v justable screw-stops L L, as and for the'purposes set forth and shown.
6. The combination of the shaft C, provided with the pulleys a a', sliding damp-head B B',
operating-lever N n n, stationary revolving December, 1873.
