Description

Aug. 4, 1925.
E. c. WILGUX DISTRIBUTOR HEAD Filed Sept. 12, 1923 INVENTOR Patented Aug. 4, 1925.
UNITED (STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST C. WILCOX, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE CONNECTICUT TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC COMPANY, INCORPORATED, 013 MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT,
A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
, ms-rnmu'ron HEAD.
Application filed September 12, 1923. Serial No. 662,203.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST C. W1Loox, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Meriden, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Distributor Head, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an igniter of the type disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 662,202, filed September 12, 1923, and this application is directed more specifically to a distributor head for such an igniter.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved .form of distributor head which will be cheap to manufacture and which will be of rugged and durable construction and well balanced.
A further object is to provide a distributor head with novel means for holding the same in place on a shaft.
.Other minor objects and features of in I vention will be apparent asthe specification preceeds.
In the drawings, which show, for illustrative purposes only, a preferred form of my invention- Fig. 1 is a side view in partial section of an igniter, embodying features of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear view in elevation of an improved form of distributor head;
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation thereof;
Fi 4 is a view in front elevation of the distributor head. i
In the present disclosure, 5 indicates the main base plate, which,'as set forth in said co-pending application, maybe the gear case cover for the engine. 6 indicates the main cam shaft of an internal combustion engine. The shaft 6 extends through the base plate 5 and through a breaker plate 7, which is mounted in a suitable bearing 8 on the plate 5. A distributor cap or cover 9 extends over and forms a cover for the igniter mechanism therewithin. The cap or cover may be held in place by any suitable means, not shown. As is usual in igniters, the breaker plate 7 is provided with fixed and movable contacts, the fixed contact being shown at 10. The distributor cover herein disclosed is claimed in my copendmg application serial No. 662,204, filed September 12, 1923.
In order to actuate the contacts so as to make and break the circuit for producing the spark, a suitable cam 11 is mounted on the'shaft 6. In the present instance the cam 11 had a sleeve-like extension 12 thereon, and a pin 13 extends through a suitable aperture in the sleeve 12 and into the shaft, for the purpose of holdin the cam and sleeve thereon. In the pre erred form the pin 13 extends above the surface of the sleeve 12, for a purpose to be described.
The distributor head proper comprises a block of insulating material, preferably of substantially conical shape or double conical shape, as indicated at 14 14. A lateral peripheral flange 15 may be provided about :the base of the upper conical portion of the block. The depending, annular, concentric sleeve 14 of the distributor head is recessed, to receive the shaft 6. In the preferred form a metallic lining sleeve 16 is embedded in the block, in line with the recess, and may project beyond the block. The metallic sleeve is provided with a key-, way notch or recess 17, which, when the sleeve 16 is slipped upon the sleeve extension 12 on the cam, receives the pin 13,
' which thus prevents relative rotation between the shaft and the distributor head.
The upper side of the block of insulating material is preferably provided with an integral fillet lug 18, in which is embedded an eyelet rivet 19. A conducting strip or distributing arm 20 is provided with an aperture extendin over the eyelet and is secured to the istributor head by spinning over or expanding the eyelet above the aperture in the conducting strip. The distributing arm 20 extends up along the conical side of the block and then along the top to the center where it makes contact with the center terminal in the distributor-cover.
The lug, conical side and top are preferpreferably a second fillet lug 21, of substantially the same form as the other fillet,
for the least arm.
purpose of counterbalancing at a" part of the Weight of the conducting e operation of a distributor is Well under tood by those skilled in the art, and a detailed ex lanation of the operation is thought to e unnecessary.
It will be seen that the distributor head is substantially symmetrical throughout,
or distributing portion WhileI have disclosed a preferred form of the invention, I do not Wish to be strictl limited thereto, since changes may be made Within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim As an article of manufacture, a distributor head for anigniter, comprising a substantially symmetrical block of insulating material having a recess therein for the reception of a shaft, a metallic contact arm extending from a point near the top center to a point adjacent the periphery thereof.
a fillet on said block for supporting said conducting strip, and a second fillet symmetrically arranged atthe opposite side of said block for counterbalancing at least a part of the Weight of said conducting strip.
ERNEST C. WILCOX.
