UNITED- STATES 1,548,548 PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES KL PATTEN, vOF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOB TO REX MANU- FACTURING 00., OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, A CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND.
WRITING INSTRUMENT.
To all whom it mayconcm:
Be it known that I, CHQRILEB H. PATTEN,
erably made ofrubber tubing'of any desired shape and color, the upper end 11 of a citizen of the United States, residing at which is preferably threaded internally as Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of mechanically-actuated pencils, more particularly to the resilient holding clip or arm attached thereto, and the object of this invention is to provide simple and effective means for connecting one end of this resilient holding clip to one of the members of the pencil to provide a strong and durable construction and reduce the cost of attaching this arm to the pencil.
'With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in-the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section illustrating one means for securing one end of the binding clip to the pencil.
Figure 2 is :1 detail partly in section showing an enlar ed view of a nut threaded onto the collar of the plug for binding one end of the resilient holding arm or clip to the plug.
Figure 3 shows another simple way of rolling the collar of the plug to bind the clip arm thereto.
Figure 4 shows a cap which may be formed of plated stock. embracing the collar of the plug and the clip arm secured thereto.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the clip showing the offset end with an opening therein.
It is found in practice, of advantage to produce simple and effective means for attaching the laterally turned upper end of the resilient clip arm of a pencil to the threaded plug therein in such a way as to make it strong and durable and yet to reduce the cost of such attaching to the very minimum; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of my invention showing one means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished:
With reference to the drawings designates the body of a pencil which is prefat 12 to receive the threaded lug 13. This plug is preferably formed of rass threaded at 14 to be screwed into the threaded end of the tube and this plug is provided with an enlargement or shoulder 15 which rests a ainstthe end of the rubber tubing and a ove this shoulder is referably formed a collar portion 16 whic in some instances, may be threaded on its outer surface as at 17 and provided with a nut 18.
The resilient clip 19 which is for the purpose of retaining the pencil in the pocket of the user is arranged to extend down along the barrel of the pencil and is provided with a laterally ofi'set portion 2Q which is pierced as at 21 to embrace or fit over the collar portion 16 of the plug. The nut 18 on this threaded collar being then screwed down onto this offset portion of the clip to secure and bind it against the enlargement or shoulder 15.
In other instances instead of threading a nut 18 onto the collar portioii of the plug, I turn this collar portion outwardly as at 22, see Figure 3, and so bind this laterally extending portion of the clip 11, to the shoulder 15 of the plug.
In still other cases I may form a cu member 23, as illustrated in Figure 4, pre erably of plated metal and pierce the center of the cup as at 24 and to the outer face of this cup I secure, by solder or other means, the laterally turned end 20 of the clip and then connect this collar to the shoulder 15 of the plug either by turning the edge 25 of this cup inwardly over the lower edge of the shoulder or by soldering or otherwise.
My improved means of securing the cli to the plug is very simple and practical an matei iall reduces the cost of construction to the minimum.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A writing instrument having a barrel portion. a threaded bearing, guide plu screwed into one end of said barrel, said plug having a shoulder and a collar portion extending above said shoulder, a spring clip having a resilient arm lying along said barrel portion and having a laterally extending end with an opening therein em bracing said collar, and means being provided for securing said clip end to said shoulder.
2. A writing instrument. having a barrel portion, a threaded bearing guide plug screwed into one end of said barrel, said plug having a shoulder and a collar portion extending above said shoulder, a sprin clip having a resilient arm lying along sai barrel portion and having alaterally extending end with an opening therein embracing said collar, and means on the collar portion for binding said clip end portion to said shoulder.
3. A writing instrument having a barrel portion, a threaded bearing guide plug screwed into one end of said barrel, said plug having a shoulder and a threaded collar portion extending above said shoulder, a springclip having a resilient arm lying along said barrel portion and having a lat erally turned end with an openin embracing said threaded collar, an a nut on said collar for binding said clip end to said shoulder.
4. A writing instrument having a barrel portion, a threaded bearing guide plug screwed into one end of said barrel, a sprin clip having a resilient arm lying along sai barrel portion and having a laterally-extending end immovably secured to the plug to prevent a relative rotation of said clip and plug.
