PORTABLE .COMBNA'E'UN A14 D .GRIIDING MACHINE.
Application Ifiled January 19, `1825. Serial Np. 3,247.
T 0 all 'whom t may concern.:
Be it lmown that l, Anuman BoUorrn-n, a citizen ofCanada, residing at l/Vinchendon, in ithe county of l/Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improve-ments in Portable Combination Sawing and Grinding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a portable machine for use in homes or small workshops for such work as grinding, sawing or the like, the invention having for an object the provision of a novel and simple machine of this sort, in which a common operating means is provided for the saw and grindstone and is arranged for convenient selective engagement with either of these implements.
For further comprehension of the invention, and ofthe objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is a side view of my improved machine.
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view showing the saw clutch.
Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the handle engaged with the initial shaft.
As here embodied my improved machine comprises a flat rectangular base 10 from which a bifurcated standard 11 projects upwardly. Located between the legs of this standard is a train of gears, as here shown four in number, positioned one above the other and which are numbered respectively from top to bottom, 14, 15, 16, and 17. The top gear 14 is fixed on a shaft 2O that has squared ends 20 projecting from the standard to receive a handle 21. The second gear 15 acts as an idler and is suitably supported in the standard, While the gears 16 and 17 drive the grindstone 23 and the circular saw 24 respectively.
The gear 16 is formed with a hub eX- tension 16 that projects through one leg of the standard and has an integral clutch element 26 thereon adapted to engage a clutch collar 27 feathered as at 28 on the shaft 29 that supports the grindstone 23, this shaft entcnding freely through the hub extension of the 9' a projection 11 from .the standard serving to support the .outer end of the on which the grindstone is fined.
shaft 29 The ygaar 17 is fixed on a shaft 32 that entends at one end through the standard 11 and mounted thereon a clutch collar 33 adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with a clutch element 34 fixed tothe saw 24, the saw and clutch element 34 being loose on the shaft 32. For shifting the clutch collar 33 I provide a rod 36 that eX- tends through a longitudinal boring 37 in the shaft 32 and has fixed to one end a transverse pin 38 that extends through a pair of longitudinal slots 39 in the shaft 32 and is fixed at its ends in the collar 33. This arrangement also provides a feather connection between the collar 33 and the shaft 32 as will be apparent.
The clutch collars 27 and 33 are arranged to be shifted inversely in unison, and to this end a lever 42 is fulcrumed between its ends to a bracket 43 projecting from the standard 11, and has a pair of pins 44 thereon, one of which engages in a circumferential groove in the collar 27 and the other in a grooved collar 45 fixed to the projecting end of the rod 36. The lever 42 extends upward beyond the collar 27 and has attached to its upper end one end of a tension spring 47 whose other end is connected to the standard 11, this spring normally urging the lever to position with the grindstone 23 in operative relation to the drive mechanism and the saw 24 out of op- 51 whose lower end projects behind the upper end of the lever 42, while its upper end is adjacent the end of the shaft 20. Wvhen the saw is to be used, the handle is removed from the end of the shaft on which it is shown and secured upon the other end of the shaft. Vhen the handle 21 is pushed onto the said other end of the shaft it moves the lever 51 to shift the levers 42, and thereby disengage the clutch collar 27 of the grindstone and engage the clutch collar 33 of the saw. The handle 21 may be locked in position on either end of the shaft by means of a set screw 54 threaded through the handle and engaged in a socket fl of which there is one in each end of the shaft 20.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new and desire to protect by Letters :Patent or the United States is as olloivs:-
l. A machine or the type set forth comprising a standard, a series of meshing gears mounted in said standard one above the other, manual drive means applied to the top gear, shai'ts (3o-axial with the two lower gears projecting respectively on opposite sides of the standard, and a grindstone and a saw mounted on the respective shafts, clutch elements lio-r engaging the respective gears with their shal'ts, and means for shifting said clutch elements inversely in unison.
2. A machine of the type set forth comprising a standard, a series of p meshing gears mounted in said standard, one above the other, a shaft on which the top gear is fixed said shaft having' squared ends pro- `ieeting from the standard, shafts co-axial with the tivo lower gears projecting respectively on opposite sides of the standard, tools on said sha'l'ts, shiftable clutch elements on the respective shafts Jfor operatively engaging the saine 'with the said tools, and means for shi'lfiing said clutch elements inversely in unison7 including a lever projecting at one end adjacent one of the squared ends of the upper shalt, to be engaged and moved by a handle placed on said shaft.
ln testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
