FREDERICK A.` BERG AND CHARLES PATERSQN, O F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS;
TOY VEHICLE.
Application` filed February 13,` 1924?.
To.l all whom amar/f concern .t
Be it known that we, FREDERICK A. BERG and Cir-rennes H. PA'rnnsoN, citizens of the United States, and residents ofthe city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois,4 respectively, have invented, certain new and useful: Improvements in a Toy Vehicle, of whichV the following is a specification.
Ouninvention. relates to a`A toy vehicle, and has forits main object to provide such a vehicle-which hasthe .form and appearance of an. aeroplane and' which comprises means for propelliiigv and steering the vehicle on the ground.v
@ther objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention-consistsin the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter describedl andi claimed.
r'he invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming`v` a part of this` specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan-viewuofour invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevationthereof;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3--3 Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section of the steering wheel, taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
lVe have illustrated the preferred form of construction embodying our invention which, comprises a body or fuselage including two main frame members or bars curved longitudinally and joined at the rear 11, and which are covered at the rear portion with a curved plate or means 12 to form a turtle back, in the conventional form of an aeroplane; a seat 13 including a back rest 14 being mounted between members 10, immediately forward of the plate 12. A panel or member 15 connects the front of said frame bars 10, and a curved plate or means 16 covers the front portion of said bars, forming the conventional cowl therewith, and also presenting the appearance of the usual radiator.
A vertically extending unitary member 17 is secured to each side bar 10, or may also be made integral therewith, each member including a lower portion 17 acting as a running gear strut, an upper portion 17 acting as a wing strut, and an intermediate portion 17" acting as a fuselage brace with which said unitary member is connected to Serial No. 692,471'.
the side memberlO'or formedintegral therewith, all said portions being madel inV one integral unit.
A plane or Wing means 18 is provided', and ispreferably secured upon the strut portion 17", and has its edges covered with a strip of pliable covering material, like felt, rubber, ete., to prevent marring furniture or articles accidentally engaged by said wing means during travel.
@ur running gear includes, in addition to the running gear strut portion 17', an axle 19 mounted in ball bearings or anti-friction bearings 20 secured to the lower ends of said strut portion 17, said axle being bent to form cranks 21 with pedals 22 thereon oper. able from seat 13. A pair of main support,- ingv wheels 23 and. 24 are mountedl on the ends of said axle, one wheel (23) issecured to one end` of the axle to rotate therewith and propel the vehicle, while theother wheel (24) is preferably rotatable on said axle in bearing to facilitate steering and turning the vehicle. vBoth wheels are preferably provided with rubber tires 25.
le also provide a propeller 26 at the front end of the fuselage, mounting it on a shaft 27 journalled in the front end of member 15 and in a panel board 28 connected to the members 10 and 17, said panel board 28 beingl composed and arranged like the usual instrument board in a vehicle of this kind and being stamped or provided with indicators 20, etc. Pulleys 30 and 31 are provided on shaft 27 and axle 19, and a belt or cable 32 extends through guide loops 33 and op- 'eratively connects said pulleys for rotating said propeller simultaneously with the rotating axle and wheels.
rlhe steering means for the device includes a wheel 34, preferably rubbentired, mounted on an axle 35 in a yoke 36 which is swingably mounted in the lower end of a post or column 37 fastened to the rear end of the fuselage, and a control stick or lever 38 is fulcrumed in a beam 39 extending from the seat to the instrument board 28, the lower end of said lever being pivotally connected by means of a link 40 to an arm 41 extending laterally on said yoke. Tail means or empennage is mounted onthe fuselage, above post 37, and includes two intersecting plates or members, ahorizontal member 43 and a vertical member 44, both preferably having their edges covered with pliable material, similar to the Wing means, to prevent marring of furniture and articles accidentally engaged thereby.
lVhile We have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for earrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. lVe, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the. precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
I-Iaving'described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A toy aeroplane comprising a fuselage also landing gear and wings; upright supporting members each of which includes a ruiming gear strut, a wing strut, and a fuselage brace all in one unit, and a panel board connecting said integral upright supporting members.
2. A toy vehicle in the form of an aeroplane comprising a fuselage with a cowl and a propeller at the front, va turtle back and -empennage including a horizontal and a Vertical member at the rear, upright supporting members on said fuselage with wing means and a running gear mounted thereon, and a panel board connecting said integral upright supporting members.
3. A toy vehicle in the form of an aeroplane comprising a fuselage with a seat wheels mounted on said axles, one being fixed thereon for propelling said vehicle.
4C. A toy vehicle in the form of an aeroplane comprising a fuselage with a seat therein, a pair of upright supporting members on said fuselage, a panel connection` between said members, wing means mounted on said members, rotatable axles mounted on said members and bent to constitute cranks furnished with pedals operable from said seat, a driving pulley forming a connection between said cranks, main ground wheels mounted on said axles, a propeller at the front of said fuselage with means for driving it from said driving pulley, a steering wheel at the rear of said fuselage and means for controlling said steering Wheel. In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
