IMPROVEMENT m SLED-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,833, dated September 8, 1874; application filed February 16, 1874.
tion:
The invention consists of a combination of levers which, being attached to a sled or sleigh, constitute a complete brake.
In the drawing hereto attached, representing the invention attached to a half-sled, A is a lever attached to the fore end of the left runner of the sled. B is a rod attached to said lever and extending back near the fore bench of the sled, where it is attached to the end of a cross-bar, G. Said cross-bar 0 extends across thesled and is attached to the end of the bar D near the right end of the foremost bench of the sled. Said bar D is fastened to said bench and extends back to the hindmostbench, and is thoroughly riveted .to each bench. A short distance from the attachment of said cross-bar C to the said bar D at a point on said crossbar (3, where it would just be in the center of the sled, is attached a rod, E, which extends back under the sled to the brake-hook F, to which it is attached. Said brake-hook F is securely fastened to the hindmost bench in the drawing, and on the end of said hook is a prong, and the drawing represents the handle of the lever as raised up and the brake-hook down. This is the position it is in when in use; but when not in use the lever A lies horizontally back on the fender of the sled, and the whole machine is so arranged that by simply raising the said lever A the prong on the near the left end of the foremost bench of the sled. This rod runs back over the fender of the sled, and is raised above it high enough to permit the cross-bar G to work easily between it and the fender of the sled, and also keep the said cross-bar in position. Rod H is simply an extension of rod B, and is used when lever A is attached to fore end of the box when a box or bed is used on two halfsleds.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the levers A, B, and G, the rod E, guard G, and hook F, as and for the purpose set forth.
SAMUEL W. BRUSH.
