DISK STEERING WHEEL FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Application mea November 8.11924.. seriaiNo. 748,772.
new anduseful device, Disk Steering Wheel for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification. p
My invention relates to steering wheels for motor vehicles, an object being in this device to simplifythe character of devices such as this and not only provide a steering wheel of disk form to simplify manufacturing operations but enable the owner to have al disk wheel on his car that will neatly conform to the design of the disk wheels that are so commonly used in the present day.
My invention embodies'a design and construction of disk steering wheels for automobiles that is adapted to be stamped out of sheet metal, fiber, pressed paper or formed outoflaminated wood, and has certain features of construction that combine the merits of'strength with beauty of design in devices for this purpose.
A particular object of my invention therefore is to provide a disk steering wheel for automobiles that will be simple, economical and durable as a disk type of steering wheel and the intended novel features of construction and design will be hereinafter more fully described in the annexed specifications,
recited in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which like reference numerals indicate the same structural parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a top view of the disk steering wheel of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an isometric drawing of a cross section M to N (Fig. l) of the steering wheel of my invention. A careful study of this figure will reveal the intended details of construction and design and more particularly if it is studied in conjunction with the top view of the device shown inFig. l.
The preferred embodiment of my invention and the desired method of producing the same will now be pointed out as references are made to the several numerals in the respective ligures illustrating thev device of my invention.
In detail my device comprises a disk steering wheel body. portion punched out Of e Pie@ Of durable and. substantial Sheetmaterial such as sheet metal, fiber, pressed paper or formed out `of laminated wood after which the same is secured to arim or hand grip ready to be attached to the `steering 'column of the automobile.
noted that the disk is ypunched from one piece and in being `so punched in a subpress die, the punch method of Vmanufacturer of` the disk enables -the ,manufacturerto pro- *asentar rArrENr onirica@ In .this connection it willvbe particularlyk duce large V'quantities at alow costfof production.
In order to obtaiira maximum of strength `andbeautyjinvldejsign yin thisjdevice I provide inv its format-ion a plurality of integral concentrically parallel segmented ribs *3- and 4.- pressed into prominent relief iny the top surface of thel disk -10- and in this form the circular rib segments will add substantial strength to the disk.
As an additional means of securing strength and beauty of design I provide a plurality of integral radiating ribs -2- pressed into more prominent relief having the appearance and general form of the spokes of a wheel and each of the radiating ribs terminating in a lug -9- which normally is adapted to extend a little beyond the circumferential line of the disk.
VIt will be .further noted that the central area o-f the disk is pressedinto a relief that brings' itl to an elevation slightly morev pronounced than that of the radiatingribs. This central area is designated by num-eral strength. A re-enforcing plate -6- is riveted to the central area in a centrally disposedposition and secured by rivet means through holes -8-. 1
It will be noted that a convenient space is provided about the periphery of the disk Vand between this and the rim or hand grip -1-.-, making room for hand grip.
Rim -1- is secured to lugs -9-- by rivet means in holes all.
DO This is donev to secure additional invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by'Letters Patent is:
1. A disk steering Wheel of the character described comprising in integral combination a plurality of concentrically parallel segmented ribs pressed into prominent relief in the top surface of the disk, a plurality of radiating ribs pressed into more prominent relief, having the appearance and form of spokesand each of said radiating ribs terminating in a lug at predetermined length beyond ythe normal circumferential line of the disk; a centrally disposed re-enforcing `plate substantially secured to the disk and a hole through the disk and the `plate for mounting the-steering Wheel and-a hole provided at the ends of sa-id radiating ribs for thesubstantial support of` a hand grip rim to the'diskas described and yfor the purpose set forth.
2. ,In a disk steering Wheel ofthe character described the integralrcombination With a plurality of concentrically disposed* segmenvtal ribs pressed into prominent semi-cylindricalappearing relief in the top surface of the disk, of a plurality of radiating ribs pressed into more prominent relief; said ribs having the appearance and general surface form of steering Wheel spokes and each terminating in a lug at predetermined length beyond the normal peripheral line of the set forth.
In Witness whereof I hereunto .set Vmy hand and seal, this 29 day of October, A. D. 1924.
ROBERT H. GARRETT. [n s] IVitnesses HELEN DURHAM, HARRY H. VVASHLAND.
