BiOTARY CORE DRILL FOR OIL WELLS.
Application led November 15, 1924. Serial No. 750,103.
To 'all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, PAUL CORTLANDT HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cement, in the county of Caddo andState of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Core Drills for Oil Vells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to rotary core drills for oil wells and incorporates changes in construction over my prior Patent No. 1,427,685.
These changes provide principally to vthe feeding of additionalfwater to the cutting edge of the drill at or adjacent to the cutting point which has been found essential to` successful operation in view ofthe elongated nature of the drill body.
Other changes reside in the application of a new type of valve and the altering of the interior of the bit to facilitate the passage of the water to the lower ducts.

The specific typeef device, as previously stated, is similar generally to that shown in the prior patent and includes the bit or body A having exteriorly threaded reduced upper portion aand the conventional fish 7. tail cutting extremity (1.. A central longitudinal passage B extendsithrough the drill and is slightly reduced and threaded adjacent the lower endat l), to engage the threads at the lower end of the sample tube C. By this arrangement the outer wall of the tube C is spaced from the wall forming the passage B sufficiently to permit the passage of the water to the lower ducts D. The ducts D begin at an intermediate point in the lower face of the bit and extend upwardly through the tapered hub portion thereof to a point just above the threaded joint between the tube and the bit at which points, as shown above` the adjacent walls are spaced to permit the feeding of the water. The ducts D at their upper extremities communicate with the passage above mentioned by means of lateral ducts d.
In the present device, the cutting element E for the sample tube is made independent of the tube body and is formed with a tapered threaded shank portion e which engages the enlarged screw-threaded lower extremity of the central ibore B.
The upper duets F correspond to the ducts provided in my former patent, extending upwardly through the enlarged portion of said bit and terminating at their upper end in the upper face of the bit and at their lower end at opposite points in the fiat faces of the cutter and adjacent to the bit, whereby the water operates to wash the proper faces of the bit.
The hollow stem G is threaded for engagement with the upper exteriorly threaded end l 0f the bit.
Particular attention is called to the construction and arrangement of the valve arrangement I-I at the upperend of the sample tube C. The valve includes the cage t and seat L, the latter receiving the spring pressed ball valve h.
By the foregoing arrangement, the drilling operation has been found to be considerably facilitated particularly due to the cleaning action of the water which has access to the entire drill surface.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, a drill bit formed with a central passage having a reduced threaded portion and a lower en larged threaded portion, a'sample bighaving a threaded stem engaging the threads of 'the lower enlarged portion, a sample tube having a ball valve at its upper end andin threaded engagement at its lower end with the reduced threaded portion, a pair of ducts formed in said bit for feeding water to the upper side faces of said bit and lower ducts forfeeding water to the bottom face of said bit.

Ina sh tail bit having a central passage, a sample tube fixed within said central passage of said bit and being spaced therefrom, ducts formed in said bit communicating between the space formed by the spaced -tube and wall of said bore and the lower face of said bit and additional ducts cornmunicating between the upper face of said bit and the side faces of said bit.
