PAVING CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed December 11, 1922. Serial No. 606,022.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY MANeA- NrnLLo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vest Pittston, county of Luzerne, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paving Constructions, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in the laying, replacement and repair of roadway pavements;
A principal object of m invention is to provide means to facilitate the laying, repair and replacement of block pavements particularly where the pavement is adjacent to and between street railway tracks.
A further object of my invention is to pro vide an improved pavement construction for use at street intersections and grade crossings where the rebuilding or re-laying of street railway or railroad tracks is frequently necessitated by reason of the wear to which the rails are subjected at such points.
A further object of my invention is to provide a pavement construction which may be removed and replaced in a minimum amount of time whereby the inconvenience, annoyance and obstruction to traffic is greatly reduced.
A further object of my invention is to provide a series of supports for the pavement blocks, the units of which are independently removable and interchangeable.
The invention further includes all of the other various objects and novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter 1 more definitely specified and described.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of one embodiment of my improvement; Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the lifting device hereinafter referred to being also shown; Fig. 3 is a side'elevation partly shown in section; Fig. 4 is a detail end elevation of a supporting plate or n1en1- ber used between the rails of a track; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the plate or member shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a transverse section on the line 6-6 of Fig.4; Fig. 7 is a plan view of the lifting device and Fig. 8 is a side elevation, partially shown in section, of the lifting device. 7
Like numerals refer to like parts in the several figures.
Rails 1 and 2 are the usual rails of a street railway or a railroad track which rest upon the usual sleepers or ties 3. A supporting plate or member 4, which may preferably be cast from iron, is ofa width slightly less than the width between the rails 1 and 2 and comprises a bottom 5 strengthened on its under side by ribs 6 which meet or intersect ribs 7 extending transversely thereto the ends of which are cut away as at 9 so as to fit the bases of the rails 1 and 2. Itibs or flanges 1O slightly spaced from the side edges of the plates. 4 extend upwardly therefrom to a height preferably of the thickness of the blocks 11 which form the pavement. have found it desirable to spread a cushion of sand 12, say in thickness, upon the top of the plate 4 upon which the paving blocks may rest. Means at the ends of the plates 4 for assisting in retaining the sand are provided by thevmembers 13 formed integrally with the plates, projecting upwardly therefrom slightly and joining at their ends the ribs 10.
It is desirable and in many instances essential that the block pavement be installed outside of the rails, and I have provided new and useful means therefor consisting 8 of supporting members or plates 14, preferably metal castings, comprising a bottom 15, a depending flange 16 and side ribs or flanges 17 extending upwardly to a height preferably of the thickness of the blocks 11. Means 18 similar to members 13 are pro- In practice, I
vided at the ends of plates 14, join at their ends the ribs 17 and assist in retaining the sand upon the plates 14. Within the flanges 16 are provided suitable holes for registry with holes in the web 19 of the rails and through which are passed bolts 20 whereby the supporting members 14 are securely held in place. The length of the supporting plate 14 is preferably the same as that of the supporting member 4 so that when assembled their ends will be in alignment. The flange 16 extends along the web of the rail resting upon the base 21 thereof, and transverse strengthening ribs 22 depend from the plates 14 being cut away at their inner ends as at 23 so as to fit the bases of the rails. Support for the members 14 is provided by pillars of concrete 24 or other suitable means upon which the strengthening ribs 22 rest.
It will now be seen that I have provided an efficient means which may be quickly operated for the laying, removingand replacement of block pavements- In operation, the plates 4: are interposed between therails and are supported thereby, the ribs 7 resting upon the base of the rail at three points; the sand is then spread over the upper surface of the plate to a suitable thick ness (although it will be understood that the sand is not necessary to the successful use of my improvement) and the blocks 11 are then suitably disposed upon the top of the said member at and within the ribs 10 and the projecting members 13. The plates latextending outside of the rail are then placed in position and the sand and paving blocks placed therein.
I have also provided means whereby the supporting plates and the pavement carried thereby'may be speedily removed when for any reason that is required in connection with the repair or replacement of the blocks. or the re-building or re -laying of the rails of the track. My improved means for this purpose comprises a metal bar having flanges 26 and 27 depending substantially three inches fromthe ends thereof, the length of the bar being substantially the distance between the centers ofthe headsof the rails 1 and 2' when positioned to form the track. Near one end26 of the bar 25 I provide a hole 28, the end of the bar being slightly thickened at this point, through which passes the bolt 29 the screw threaded end of which passes into the screw threaded opening 30 formed in'the edge of the supporting plate 4. It will be understood that one or more of theselifting devices may be used as desired for each supporting plate and that a suitable number of holes 30 may be correspondi-ngly provided. The lifting device is utili-zedby placing the lower edge of the flange 27 upon the head of the rail 2 and the lower edge of the flange 26 upon the head of the rail 1. The screw threaded end of the boll 29 is then caused to engage with the screw threaded opening 30 and the rotation of the bolt then causes the adjacent side of the supporting plate 4 to be lifted until it reaches a point above the head of the rail 1, thereby permitting this end of the plate to be grasped and lifted by any suitable means, manually or otherwise. and the entire plate and the paving blocks and sand carried thereby to be removed. 'It will be readily understood that by removing the bolts 20 the supporting plates 14 on the outsid'eof the I do not desire therefore to be limited or restricted to the exact details of construction and arrangement shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A pavement construction adapted for railway tracks comprising a metal plateof a width slightly less than the distance between the rails andremovably positioned therebetween, paving material upon said i1 plate, ribs extending longitudinally along the bottom of the plate andribs extending transverselythereto, the ends of saidlastmentioned ribs being adapted'to fit the-bases of said rails and providing a support for said plate.
2. Apavement constructionadapted for railway tracks comprising a plate removably positioned between the rails, alayer of sand upon said plate, blocks of paving material upon said sand, said plate being provided with flanges extending along the sides thereof for retaining said blocks and said sand, andribs extending across the bottomof said plate, the ends ofsaid ribs being adapted to engage the bases of said rails and to pro vide'support for said plate.
3. A pavement constructionadapted for railway tracks con'iprising a plate "removably positioned between the ltlllSy-Ei layer ofsand uponsaid. plate, blocks of paving material upon said'sand, said plate being provided with-flanges extending along the sides thereof for retaining said blocks and said sand, means projecting from the plate along the ends thereof for retainingsaid sand, ribs extending across the bottom of said plate, the ends of said ribs beingadapted to engage the bases of said-rails and to provide support for said plate. V
In :witness whereof, I have hereuntoset my hand this (itliday of Decembery1922.
