Be it known that I, OSCAR W. EASTON, a citizen of the United States, :residing at Pigeon Cove, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented cer` tain new and useful Improvements in an Ice Creeper, of which the following is a specification. l

This invention relates to improvements in ice creepers, and more particularly to that type which may be easily detached if desired.

An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily positioned upon the heel of the wearer and prevent slipping or sliding upon snow or icy surfaces.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will adhere to the heel of the wearer without straps or other attachments of any character.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple in construction although durable and eflicient for the purpose intended.

Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 indicates the shoe of a wearer having a conventional type of heel 6 formed thereon. The numeral 7 indicates the body of the creeper which is preferably constructed of rubber or other resilient material and has a raised extension tongue 8 formed on the rear end for the purpose of securely retaining the device upon the heel. The front portion of the body indicated by the numeral 9 has a wire bracing strip l0 secured therein, a cover slip l1 being positioned on the inner side of the strip 9 for the purpose of covering the ybracing strip 10 and enalbling'; 'same' to iirm'ly engage the front of the heel.

The' bottom ofthe device is constructed of a pair of plates 12 and 13 positioned above and below the` bottom of the body member and preferably constructed of comparatively thin metal. The bottom plates are firmly fastened by means of the spurs 14 which may be particularly constructed as illustrated in Figure 4t comprising an enlarged bottom portion tapering to a point as indicated by the numeral 15 and a reduced shank formed on the upper portion of the spur and adapted to extend through the body bottom and the metallic plates, the upper plate having counter sunk openings to permit the upper extremity of the spur shank to be hammered or riveted over and prevent displacement thereof.

In use, the device may be constructed of numerous sizes enabling same to be fitted over the heels of shoes, to be Worn on snow or icy surfaces to prevent slipping of the wearer and the numerous dangers incident thereto.

It is obvious that the construction of the device will enable same to firmly adhere to the heel, the body being preferably constructed of rubber and having the extension piece at the rear thereof to provide a larger gripping surface, while the front portion 9 has the reinforcing wire l0 secured therein for the purpose of retaining same tightly against the front portion of the heel and preventing displacement of the device.

It is to be understood that the form vof my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes as to the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A device of the character described, comprising a body of substantially the shape of a shoe heel, said body being constructed of elastic material, a metallic bracing member embedded in the front portion of the body and arranged to hold said front portion in contact with a shoe heel, and a plurality of pointed projections formed on the bottom of said body.

2. A device of the character described,

comprising a body of elastic material, said body being substantially the shape of a shoe heel and arranged to be received thereon, a wire bracing member embedded in the front portion of the body and arranged to hold said front portion in position, and a plurality of projections formed on the bottom of said body.

3. An ice Creeper of the class described comprising a body adapted to it the heel of a shoe, said body being preferably constructed of elastic material, an extension tongue formed on the rear portion of the body and adapted to provide an additional gripping element, a wire bracing member secured to the front portion of the body, a cover strip arranged to cover the wire brac# ing member, a pair of bottom plates positioned above and below the bottom of the body and provided with a plurality of openings therein, and a plurality of pointed projections or spurs having enlarged taper portions on the bottom thereof, reduced Shanks formed on the upper portions of the enlarged portions extending through the openings in the bottom plates, the upper portion of the shank being hammered or otherwise secured to the upper plate member to prevent displacement of the spurs.
