Be it known that I, EDWARD B. Nowosnm- SKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomfield, in the county of Essex,
7 State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magnetos, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to magnetos and in particular to the circuit breaker mechanism and high tension distributor mechanism thereof.
It is an object of this invention to enclose these mechanisms within a unitary housing, such that when the cover is removed, all of the breaker and distributor mechanisms are exposed for inspection and repair.
It is a further object of this invention to so construct the above mechanisms that the whole may be removed for replacement and repair without dismantling the current generating portion of the magneto.
These and further objects will be apparent after reading the followin specification and claims in connection wit the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of my complete magneto.

Now referring to the several figuresmore in detail, 1 indicates a base structure to which is secured an end plate 2 and a housing 3 as by means of screws 4. The end .plate 2 and housing 3 carry bearings for a 1921. Serial No. 482,053.
rotor 5, and are, therefore, generally referred to as the back and front plates, respectively, of the magneto, said rotor being of the inductor type and acting to direct the flux from a permanent magnet 6 in alternately opposite directions through the core 7 of an induction coil 8 via magnet pole pieces 80 and 81 and core pole pieces 9 and 10 embedded in the base structure 1. The induction coil is provided with a high tension terminal 11 which projects within a bore 12 of a connector block 13 and makes contact with a metallic insert 14 therein through a coiled spring 15. The connector block is seated within an opening in the back wall of the housing 3, and is provided with a shoulder 16 to fit against the edge of the opening. To retain the same against displacement a metallic ring 17 is provided, said ring having two cars 18 secured to the back wall of the housing by means of screws 19. Since the ring is grounded to the housing, it is spaced away from the connector block adjacent to the exposed portion 20 of the insert 14 to provide a suitable air gap therewith, and an annular flange 21 is provided to bear against a shoulder 22 on the connector block to retain the same in place. Mounted within the housing is a spider, its legs 23 being secured to the back wall of the housing by means of a stud 24 and screws 25. Rigidly secured in the hub of the spider is a bearing 26 within which is rotatably carried a hollow shaft 27 ha fixed to it a gear 28 meshing with a second gear 29 keyed on to a projecting shaft end 30 of the rotor 5.. The shaft 27 is held against lateral displacement through the expedient of a snap ring 31 engaging a circumferential groove 84 in the shaft. Slidably retained within the hollow shaft is the shaft of a distributer spool 32, the same having a metallic core 33 bored out at its end to receive a spring pressed brush 34 referably of carbon to collect the current rom the insert 14 in the connector block 13. The core adjacent the bored out end is provided with a ring 35 which cooperates with the grounded metallic ring 17 to form a safety spark gap therewith so as to prevent rupture of the coil should the secondary circuit remain open during operation of the magneto. The spool is driven by the hollow shaft through a key 36 moulded on the distributor spool engaging within a slot 37 in the from side to side of the cover and. which is insert 49 in the distributor S.

Bridging the contacts 52 and70 is a condenser 75, the terminals of which are secured to the screw 53 and to a stud 76 which is'tapped into the breaker base.

From the above'descriptionit will be seen that by removing the nuts 67 that the: cover 43 of the housing may be removed together with the distributor block 42, thereby exposing the circuit breaker and high tension distributor mechanism. Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a magneto, a front plate forming .a substantial part of a housmg, a metallic a rotary distributer finger and distributer mechanism enclosed within said housing, a distributer block detachably carried by and removable with said cover and having parts extending through the cover into cooperative engagement with said rotary distributer, all the portions of said mechanism being readily removable from the housing upon removal of the cover.
2. In a magneto, a front plate forming a housing, a removable metallic cover therefor carrying a quickly detachable distributor block, a distributer spool co-operating therewith, a hollow shaft slidably retaining the spool and driving the same, a gear secured to the hollow shaft, a bearing detachable from the interior of the housing provided with means for retaining said gear and shaft in place within the housing and means cooperating with the gear to drive the same.
3. In a magneto having an induction coil, a front plate forming a housing, a removable cover therefor carrying a distributer block, a distributer spool cooperating there with, a hollow shaft slidably retaining the spool and driving the same, a gear secured to the hollow shaft, a bearing detachable from the interior of the housing provided with means for retaining said gear and shaft in place within the housing, and a connector block for completing a circuit between said induction coil and the distributer spool secured in said housing and removable from the interior thereof.
4. In a magneto, a housing, a removable cover therefor carrying a distributor block, a distributer spool provided with a conductive element cooperating therewith, a hollow shaft slidably retaining the spool and drivmg the same, a gear secured to the hollow shaft, a bearing detachable from the interior of the housing provided with means for retaining said gear and shaft in place within the housing, a connector block having lic ring spaced from the distributor spool conductive element and forming a safety spark ap therewith secured in said housing and removable from the interior thereof and means cooperating with the gear to drive the same.
5. In a magneto, a housing, a removable cover thereforcarrying a distributor block,

In a magneto, a distributor mechanism comprising a hollow shaft, a distributor spool having a portion in said hollow shaft, said shaft being rotatably mounted in a bearing, and lubricating mechanism for said shaft comprising a cup frictionally retained on and encompassed about the bearing, an P1 to the shaft and a lubricating wick in said opening.
