Description

1,547,327 w. H. HUTCHXNS ELECTRIC IGNITION APPARATUS Filed Sept. 24, 1924 Patented July 28, 1925 UNITED STATES 1,547,327 PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. HUTCHINS, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO NORTH EAST ELEC- TRIO COMPANY, or ROCHESTER,
NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
ELECTRIC IGNITION APPARATUS.
Application filed September 24, 1924. Serial No. 739,729.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. IIUTGHINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Ignition Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for mounting and securing an ignition timer-head or distributor in place on an engine, and for facilitating the adjustment of the same with respect to the time of ignition. The object of the invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means for performing bot-l1 of these functions, and for rendering it possible to remove, replace or adjust the head rapidly and conveniently.
To the foregoing end the invention consists in the structure hereinafter described, as it is defined in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation, part-1y in section of ignition apparatus embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a section approximately on the line 38 in Fig. 2.
The invention is illustrated as used in connection with a timer-distributor or ignition-head 5. The interior mechanism of this head is not illustrated, as it may be of any' ordinary or suitable form, preferably including automatic advancing mechanism. The head 5 has the usual depending stem 6, which seats loosely in a sleeve or hearing 7 on the engine in connection with which the ignition apparatus is used. The usual drive-shaft 8 project-s downwardly through the stem, and may be detachably connected with the mechanism of the engine in any ordinary or convenient Way.
The part characteristic of the present invention is a plate 9 which is arranged to engage a slot 10 formed in the stem 6. This plate is secured in place by two bolts 11 and 12, seated in lugs 13 formed at the top of the sleeve 7. When the bolts are tightened the plate is clamped securely against the top of the sleeve, and by its engagement with the slot 10, the stem and the head are secured in place while still free to be rotated. When it is desired to remove the head the nuts may be loosened on the bolts 11 and 12, and the plate 9 may then be swung around the bolt 11 as a pivot, since it is provided with a slot 14 to permit disengagement from the bolt 12. The bolts have heads formed with fiat sides to engage narrow up-turned flanges 15 on the plate 9, for the purpose of locking the bolts and preventing them from becoming loosened accident-ally.
The adjustment of the ignitionhead is performed by means of an arm 16 attached, by screws 17, to the bottom ofthe head and lying over the plate 9. The plate has graduations 18, and an arcuate slot adapted to receive a bolt 19 which passes through the end of the arm 16 and is tightened by means of a thumb-nut 20. When the adjustment of the timer is to be changed the thumb-nut is loosened and the arm may then be swung to one position or another as indicated by the graduations. When the head is to be removed from the sleeve as above described, the thumb-nut 20 is removed entirely to dis connect the arm from the plate.
The invention claimed is:
1. Ignition-apparatus comprising; a timer-head provided with a depending stem having a slot therein, and with a laterallyprojecting arm; a bearingsleeve loosely receiving said stem; a locking-plate adapted to enter said slot in the stem: means for securing said plate removably to the top of said sleeve; and means for securing said arm adjustably to the plate.
2. Ignition-apparatus comprising; a bear ing-sleeve; two bolts engaging the top of said sleeve on opposite sides; a locking-plate attached to the sleeve by said bolts and slotted to engage one bolt so that it may be swung pivotally upon the other; a timerhead having a stem loosely fitting the bearing sleeve and having a slot engaged by the locking-plate when the latter is secured in place by the bolts; an arm fixed to the timerhead and lying over the locking-plate, one of these parts having an arcuate slot and the other a perforation aligning with the slot; and a bolt passing through the slot and the hole and adapted to clamp the arm to the plate in adjusted angular position.
WILLIAM H. HUTCHINS.
