I 1,547,229 E. MORRIS DRAWER FOR CABINETS Filed 0G12.A 7, 1922 -T JL 5 2/@1 2 f1 Edmund I MON/'6 Patented July 28, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT( OFFICE.
IBDMUNIO MORRIS, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO WILMARTH SHOW CASE C0., 0F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
:DRAWER ron CABNETS.'
Application led October 7, 1822. Serial No. 592,979.
To all Ywiom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDMUND MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, havek invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawers for Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drawers for cabinets or the like.
The objects of the invention are:
First, to provide a new and improved glass front construction for a drawer.
Second, to provide such an improved construction adapted to a drawer constructed mainly of wood.
Third, to provide an improved angle brace for the front of such drawer.
Fourth, to provide a reinforced joint between the sides and the glass front of such drawer.
Objects pertaining to details and ecoliemies of construction and operation will denitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of the invention by the devices and means described in the following specication. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a front elevation of a drawer embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is an enlarged detail sectional elevation view taken on a line 2-2 of Figs. I and III.
Fig. III is a detail horizontal sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. II..
In the drawing the sectional views are 4taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The parts will be referred to by their numerals.
l is the bottom front rail of a drawer, 2, 2 are the front corner posts, 3 is the side coupled to the said corner posts and 4 is the glass plate constituting the front. The bottom rail 1 contains a groove 1l constitutinn` a seat for the lower edge of the plate The corner posts 2 contain vertical grooves2l and the bottom front rail l is secured to the post 2 by the bracket 5 which is extended and conformed at 51 to fit within and reinforce the vertical groove 21 in the posts 2. The outer edge'52 of the bracket which is constructed of sheet metal is deiected slightly inwardly to aiord a yielding means for retaining the glass plate 4 in place.
A horizontal ear 53 is formed on the lower end of the bracket and secured to the bottom front rail l by a suitable screw, the plate being retained in place by screws in the corner posts and side of the drawer. The drawer bottom can be of a very thin sheet 6 as it is effectively supported by the bottom front rail. This provides a very simple construction for effectively retaining the glass front in place without the eX- posure of any metal to view, thereby providing a structure which harmonizes with the front of a cabinet and which at the same time is exceedingly strong. Because the seats for the ends of the glass plate are reinforced by the metal there is very little likelihood of the posts being broken and their size can consequently be reduced to the minimum, all of which is of very great advantage in the construction of the drawers and in the economy of material.
The bracket which is turned to form the seat provides a very strong reinforcement for the drawer and because of that fact it is unnecessary to provide for any rail or frame along the top of the glass plate and therefore the full view of the contents of the drawer is possible,- the window opening being of the full dimension of the drawer end.
This structure is capable of considerable variation without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a glass front drawer structure, the combination of the drawer with a glass plate front, the upper edge of the plate beingA exposed, a bottom front rail grooved at its top to receive theJ bottom of said plate, suitable corner posts'with vertical grooves to receive the ends of said glass plate, a supporting bracket at each side of sheet metal secured to the corresponding post and being conformed as a reinforcement to the groove in theisaid lpostwith its outer edge deiiected inwardly to yieldingly engage the end of the glass and havinga horizontal ear -at the bottomrattached to the said bottom front rail, coacting as specied.:ii
2. In a glass front drawer' structure, the combination of the drawer with-a glass plate front, tlie upper edge of the plate being exposed, a bottom front rail grooved at its top to receive the bottom of said plate, suitable corner posts with vertical grooves -to receive the ends of's'ad glass plate, `a supporting bracket at each side of sheet metal` secured tothe correspondingv post and beingl conformed as a reinforcement to theg-roove inthe said post, and having a horizontal ear atthe bottom attached to the said bottom Vfront rail, coacting as specified.
3. In a glass front drawer structure, the combination of the drawer with a glass plate front, the upperedge of the plate being exposed, suitable corner posts with vertical grooves to receive the ends of said glass plate, a supporting bracket at each side of lsheet metal secured to the corresponding i/v post and being conformed as a reinforcement to the groove'in the said post and having, a horizontal ear at the bottoni attached to the said bottom, coacting` as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my 30 .hand and seal.
EDMUN D MORRIS. [L sfl
