BURNER non soLIn METALDEHYDE AND THE LIKE.
Application filed April 27, 1923. Serial No. 635,178.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUsUsTo Boson, a subject of the King of Italy, and resident of Basel, Switzerland, have invented new and useful improvements in Burners for Solid Metaldehyde and the like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The present invention relates to burners for solid metaldehyde and the like with an automatic resilient feed of the fuel and a stop device therefor and has for its object to arrange the stop device in such a manner as to maintain a constant burning surface on the fuel and at the same time to ensure stopping thereof without affecting the flame height.
In burning solid metaldehyde tablets, blocks or the like, experience has shown that the use of a usual mar 'inal stop for the elastically raised fuel gives rise to the formation of a central conical projection which causes the flame to expand laterally as well as in the direction of the height. On the other hand, care must be taken in the use of a central fuel stop to ensure also vaporization of the central part of the fuel block as the heat in the center of the flame is not so great as in the circumferential parts thereof.
From thispoint of view, according to the present invention, I have arranged the fuel stop device in the form of a central stop member, preferably a plate, perforated or not, placed within the middle thirdpart of the burning surface of the fuel and provided with heat conveying means to convey heat, from the outer flame parts to the stop member for central fuel vaporization, in order to ensure constant burning over thewhole surface of the fuel.
The accompanying drawing represents an embodiment of .a burner constructed according to the present invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation and Figure 2 a plan view thereof.
The base F of the burner carries four posts T having upper enlarged parts to support the vessel or instrument to be heated. Each of the said posts T is provided with an inwardly directed arm A connected to the central stop plate P for the fuel B, said stop plate determining the position of height of the burning surface of the fuel. A coiled spring S acts from below upon a carrying plate N for the fuel block to press same against the stop plate P. The arms A are of a relatively great transverse section and pass through the outer parts of the flame from which they are strongly heated to convey the heat to the central stop plate P, so as to heat the same and to afford vaporization of the central part of the fuel block. @n the other hand, the stop plate P is so dimensioned with respect to its lateral extension as to occupy only the middle third part of the burning surface of the fuel. This particular confining of the stop plate dimensions is of some importance in as much as the burning of the uncovered marginal portions of the fuel block and the vaporization of the covered central part thereof automatically regulate themselves relatively to one another so that a constant burning height and flame size are ensured.
The stop plate P, being hot, may produce after extinguishing a subsequent vaporization of the fuel, which is undesirable and causes losses. To avoid this drawback, it is advantageous before extinguishing to break the contact between the stop plate and the fuel block, in order that the hot plate may not transmit its heat to the fuel. To this end, one of the posts T carries a movable arm G which can be turned over the fuel block and by means of projections Z can.
push the fuel block B against the action of the spring S, whilst when the arm G is turned outwards as shown in full lines, it may be used as handle. Obviously, the fuel carrying plate N can be provided with a special lowering device.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A burner for solid metaldehyde and the like, comprising a resilient feed device, a central stop member for the fuel arranged to cover the middle third part of the burning surface of the fuel, and large heat conveying arms extending from said stop member through the outer flame zone to convey heat therefrom to the stop member for central fuel vaporization, for the purpose described.
2. A burner. for solid metaldehyde and the I like, comprising resilient feed device for the fuel, a stop device therefor and a separating device to produce separation between the fuel and its stop device before extinguishing, for the purpose described.
3. -A burner for solid metaldehyde and the like, comprising a resilient feed device for iii: fuei, a step device therefor and a movable lowering arm sup wrted so as to be cupable of being turned over the fuel for lowering the same, Whilst in another position said arm can be used as handle, substantially as described.
my name this 12th day of April, 1923, in the presence of twe subscribing witnesses.
