SELECTOR VALVE.'
' Application nieu rebruary'a?, 1922. f serial no. 539,786.
To all Lo/Lome may conce-m l Be it known -tliat I, BERNARD C. Gruen, a citizenl of the United States, residing at Sanborn, in the county of OBrien and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful l Improvements in Selector Valves, of which. the following is a specification, This invention relates to improvements in dispensing systems especially' designed vfor dispensing oil and `the like v'at automobile service stations. l
'An object of the present "invention/is the provision of means whereby' a plurality kof tanks orcontaineis may be connected to a Acommon source of' air supply, to dispense diierent grades of oil orother'fluid under pressure, provision being made for'control-V trated in the accompanying drawings Aand pointed out in the appended claim. In the drawings Figure 1 is a section taken on line 1 1 of Figure'3.
Figure 2 is a top'planview of the valve. Figure 3 is a side 'elevation of the same. Figure' 4 is a. sectional viewon the line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings,-
wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the dispensing system is designed to include a plurality of tanks or liquid containers for the purpose of dispensing various grades of oil, orv other liquid, the said tanks may contain light, medium and heavy oils.
Each of the tanks is supplied with a separate discharge pipe 22,23 and 24 respectively and these pipes are in communication with a valve casing 25, through which liquid from one of the containers may lbe dispensed. For this purpose, the valve casing 25 is provided with a. single discharge nozzle 26. This nozzle is controlled by a plug valve 27 having aport O1. passage therethrough and lalso having an' operating handleqor wheel 29, the saidvalve having its loweren'd reduced andbearing within anopening 30 provided in the casing 25.
Also located within the casing 25. is a selector valve 31, this valve being provided with van opening 32. formed in a circular head 3 3.l .'lheopening 32 provides 'an'additional bearing for the plug valve 27, while the head 33 .within which this opening is' formed has a bearing ask at 34`in the casing 25. Thev opposite end of th'evalve 3l is provided with an arcuate heady 35 which the casing 25 and to close vinlet' ports y36, 3T and 38 provided in the valve casing. These inlet ports are .in/communication respectively with the discharge pipes22, 23 and 24. f The valve 31- is provided with a passage 39V which is adapted to be brought "intois adapted to bearagainstthe inner Ywall of i register with any oneJ of thefports` 36, 3T y or 38 and the port 28 provided in the plug valve 27. Communicationl may thus be established between any one of the inlet ports of the valve casing and the discharge spout 26. The selecto-r valve 31 is capable of operation independently of the plug valve 2l' and for this purpose is provided with a handle 39, by lmeans of which it may be ro-. tated within the bearings. 34 of the casing and around the plug valve`27. In orderto hold the valve member 31 in proper position 7 there is provided a plurality of notches 40,
which are engageable by a spring actuated dog 41 carried by the handle 39. This dog is formed in separate sections and includes a notch engaging tooth and a separable shank 42, the latter operating within the bore formed in the handle '39 and being engaged by a spring 43.v Secured to the handle 39 of the valve 31is a pointer 44 l which is movable with the valve, while the top of the valve casing 25 contains-` suitable indicia for coi-operation with the pointer to indicate the particular tank or container from which liquid is to be discharged. These Y indicia are shown in Figures 1 and 2 ofthe drawings and include` L Vfor light, M for medium and H for heavy, thus indicating. different Vgrades of lubricating o-il.
In orderto keep the plug valve 27 properly seated thereis secured to the selector valve 31 a spring arm 45, whose outer end is provided with an opening for the reception of the stem of the valve 27y and this end is adapted to bear upon the upper end ont the Vsaid valve to yieldingly force the latter within its seat. ,i A
In addition, the invention provides a snport for a suitable measure (not shown) into which liquid roin the tanks or containers may be received. This support consists of,
a basin-like receptacle 46 having a strainer 4:7 spaced from the bottom thereof. This strainer is provided with a reinforcing grating 48 and is located directly beneath the discharge spout 26 so that a measure or other receptacle inay be supported thereon. The basin 46 is secured to the bottoni of the valve casing 25 by ineans of a depending arin or bracket 49.
Tt will be seen from. the foregoing description and accompanying drawings, when it is desired to dispense liquid from the tank containing light oil, the pointer 44; is
directed toward the L on the valve casingv 25. This will position the selector valve 31 so that the passage 39 establishes communication between the inlet port 36 and the outlet port or nozzle 26, the plug valve Q7 being then operated to ccinplete this communi cation. As long as the selector valve 3l remains in this position7 the plug' valve 27 may be operated to dispense liquid from the tank 10. Liquid from either the tank 11 or 12 may be dispensed by arranging the valve 31 in accordance with the letters M or H upon the valve 25.
The invention is susceptible lof various changes in its forni, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to niake such changes as properly :tall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A valve comprising a casing having an arcuate wall, a plurality of inlet ports in said casing and leading through saidY wall and also having an outlet port, a turn valve having an opening therein and also having its lower end reduced and bearing within an opening provided in the casing, an operating handle secured to the turn valve, a swinging selector valve mounted within the casing and having an apertured circular head in which the turn valve is ournaled and also having an arcuate shaped head bearing against the arcuate wall of the casing adj acent the inlet ports said swinging selector valve further having a central `passage therein which communicates with the inlet ports and turn valve respectively and an operating handle on said selector valve.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
