IN ELECTRICAL SAFETY PLANTS.
application filed. December 15, 1923. Serial No. 680,897.
1 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Earn. Votnnns, a citizen of Germany, residing at Berlin-Lard;- witm 2'? Corneliusstrasse, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Alarm Device for Announcing lnterruptions in Electrical Elafety Plants, of which the following is a specification.
T his invention relates to improvements in electrical alarm apparatus for the protection of dwellings and the like as by connection with the doors and windows thereof.
The invention has for. its object to provide an apparatus of the type in which the consumption of electric current is relatively low and is'characterized in that thealarm circuit is normally opened.
11 further object is the provision of an alarm apparatus including an intermittently and electrically operated driving mechanism connected with a retarding gear train which immediately subsequent to a prolonged interruption of the operation of the driving mechanism closes the electric alarm circuit so as to set the alarm in operation.
In the accompanying drawings wherein an approved embodiment of the invention is illustrated: I
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the im proved alarm apparatus diagrammatically illustrating the alarm circuit.
l igure 2 is section on the line 2--2 of F3 g. 1 diagrammatically showing the clock operating circuit.
l lefei ing to the drawing in detail 1 indicates a wheel adapted to drive the clock mechanism or other retarding gear train not shown).
The wheel 1 secured upon a shaft 3 journalled in a supporting frame 1 and at a point remover. from a frame 25 is pivotally mounted upon the shaft R. The frame 25 is provided at its lower portion with a spring pawl 5 engaging the teeth of a ratchet wheel 6 which later adapted to revolve in the direction of the arrow indicated in ll 2 and is rotatably mounted upon the shaft 3, a spring pawl 13 being also engaged with the ratchet wheel to prevent liiacltward rotation thereof. The frame 25 adapted to be oscillated upon the shaft 3 and when disposed in the position illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 its weight is supported through the spring pawl 5 upon one of the teeth of the ratchet the gear wheel 1 wheel 6 thereby rotating the latter. The ratchet wheel 6 is connected to the shaft 3 by a coil spring which is normally under tension due to the effect or the weight of the frame on the ratchet wheel and the resistance imposed on the gear wheel 1 by its connection with its clock mechanism (not shown). w
an electro-magnet 2 supported on the frame has one of the terminals of the coil thereof connected with a battery 11 the opposite side of which latter is connected by a conductor- 12 with a stationary insulated contact 10. The contact member 7 supported by the armature 8 of the electro-magnet 2 electrically connected with the opposite end of the electro-magnet 2, the armature 8 being pivotally mounted on the frame 25 and being normally retained in spaced relation to the core of the electro-magnet 20 owing to the tension of the spring 27. The movement of the armature 8 under the influence of the spring 27 is limited by a set screw 4 fitted in an adjacent portion of the oscillating frame 25.
The electric alarmcircuit of the apparatus comprises a battery or other source of electric energy 16 having one pole connected with a hell or other alarm device 17 the latter being connected in series with the metallic frame structure 1 of the apparatus. The opposite pole of the current source 16 is connected by a conductor 16 with a spring contact. bruslrlS the opposite extremity of which bears against a ring 19 formed of conducting material and having an interior bushing of insulating material fitting over the shaft 3. The ring 19 carries a contact element 1 1 disposed in the path of a. contact pin 15 projecting laterally from and carried by the ratchet wheel 3. The ring 19 carrying the contact member 1a is secured thereto and rotates therewith.
In use, the conductor 12 can be connected with a window or door lock or at any other point in a dwelling or structure that it is desired to protect with the alarm apparatus.
The apparatus operates as follows; assuming that the frame structure with the frame 25 carrying the magnet 2 occupies the position indicated by dotted lines, the spring 5 bearing against the ratchet wheel tends to rotate the latter and this rotative effort is transmitted to theshaft 8 through the spring 20 and thence to the gear wheel 1 and the retarding gear train (not shown) an If:
for operating the latter. The frame 25 continuing its movement through the position indicated in full lines in 25 finally comes into a position where the contact member 9 is engaged with the contact member 10 and the circuit of the battery 11 being thus closed the coil of the electro-magnet 2 is energized. As the armature 8 is prevented from moving toward the electro-magnet 2 due to its engagement with the contact member 10 the result of the magnetization causes the fran'ie to swing upwardly about the shaft 3 until it is restored to the position indicated in dotted lines, the spring pawl 5 sliding over the teeth of the ratchet wheel 6. In this manner as long as the electrical connection bet-ween the battery 11, the con tact member and the coil of the electric magnet 2 remain intact the ratchet wheel 6 together with the shaft 3 and the connected parts are rotated.
When the. electrical connections between the battery 11 and the electro-n'iagnet 2 and the contact magnet 10 are interrupted the electro-magnet 2 will fail to re-set the frame when the contact members 9 and 10 engage and thus when said frame 25 comes to rest with the armature against the contactmember 9 the energy stored in the tensioned spring 20 acts to continue the rotation of the shaft 3 until the contact member l l is brought into engagement with the contact pin 15 whereupon the circuit of the battery 16 is closed through the conductor 16, spring brush 18, ring 19, contact members l iand 15, ratchet wheel (5, the frame structure 1, the conductor 17 and the alarm 17. The alarm circuit having been thus closed the operation of the alarm continues until the circuit is interrupted by an attendant.
I claim:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, a normally open electric circuit, an
electrically operated driving mechanism included therein, and means for intermittently closing said circuit, a normally open alarm circuit, an alarm interposed in and oper ated by said circuit, and means acting in response to a prolonged interruption of the first mentioned circuit to close the alarm circuit.
2 In an apparatus of the character described, an electrically operated driving mechanism including an electric circuit, a pivoted driving member, elcctro-magnetic actuating means for the driving member and contacts interposed in said circuit controlling the energization of the e'lcctro-magnetic means according to the position of the driving member, an alarm circuit, an electrically operated alarm interposed in said alarm circuit, means acting in response to an interruption to the first mentioned circuit for closing the second mentioned circuit.
An apparatus of the character described comprising a shaft, a member r0- tatably mounted on said shaft, and intermittently operated electro-magnetically ac tuated driving means for said rotatable mem- )Ol including a circuit, an alarm circuit, an alarm interposed in said alarm circuit, and means acting subsequent to an interruption in the first mentioned circuit to close the alarm circuit, the last mentioned means including a normally tensioned spring connecting the rotatable member with the shaft and adapted to continue to drive the latter subsequent to the interruption in the oper ation of the electro-magnetically operated driving means.
in testimony whereof I have afiixed signature in presence of two witnesses.
