'1 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Brno GOLDMAN and SOLOMON GOLDMAN, both citizens of the United States, residing at Monrovia, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to ice boxes, refrigerators and the like, and the objects are first, to provide an apparatus that will prevent ice boxes from being damaged when being filled with ice; second, to provide an apparatus that will prevent the ice from being dropped to the bottom of the box when being placed therein; third, to provide an ice box that is simple in construction and easy to fill with ice.
lVe attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 2 represents a sectional View on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 represents a part sectional View on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, the refrigerator 11 may be integral with a cold storage room, or may be of the portable type, the ice box 1 is integral with the refrigerator 11 with a lid 13 thereon, and a floor 2 is positioned between the ice box 1 and refrigerator 11, the tubes 3 are secured to the corners of the said floor 2 and extend vertically within the ice box 1, the guides 12 are secured to the upper ends of the said tubes 3 and the rods 5 are slidably secured in the said guides 12, and the pistons the ing secured to the said rods 5 are slidably positioned in the said tubes 3, the checkvalves 9 are mounted in the bottom-end portion of the said tubes 3 and the valves are mounted in the lower-side portions of the same tubes 3, and the springs 14 are positioned in compression between the said piston a and a seat in the lower end of the tubes 3. The links 6 are secured to the upper ends of the said rods 5, and extend inwardly a distance, as shown in Figure 2, and the rods 7 are secured to the inner ends of the said links 6 and hang downwardly a distance, and a platform 8 is secured to the lower ends of the said rods 7, as shown in Figure 3.
When it is desired to fill the box 1 in the refrigerator 11 with ice, the lid 13 is lifted up and the platform 8 is raised by lifting the rods 7, links 6, rods 5 and pistons 4, by permitting the compression of the springs l t to automatically relax within the tubes 3, and as the said pistons 4 are being lifted the check-valves 9 automatically open against their own gravity by the suction of airpassing therethrough into the tubes 3, between the said check-valves 9 and thepistons 4:, and the ice may then be deposited on the platform 8, and the weight ofthe said ice in turn presses the said platform 8 into the box 1 against the compression of the said spring 14:, by pushingthe pistons 4: down into the tubes 3 against the back pressure of the air therein, by the automatic closing of the check-valve 9 to force the said air through the valve 10, the said valve 10 may be adjusted to govern the speed of the downward travel of the platform 8 when loaded with ice by restricting the volume of air passing therethrough.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:

In a refrigerator, a refrigerating compartment, an ice box above said compartment, a lid for said ice box a platform mounted in said ice box for supporting a cake of ice which hold said platform in a lowered position, tubes mounted in said ice box, pistons mounted in said tubes, means connecting said pistons and said platform, a
check valve for controlling the admission of air into said tubes below said pistons, and springs in said tubes bearing against the under side of said pistons for elevating said pistons and said platform as the ice melts and the weight of the ice decreases.
2. In a refrigerator, a refrigerating compartment, an ice box, a lid for said ice box, a platform mounted in said ice box for supporting a cake of ice which holds said platform in a lowered position, tubes mounted in said ice box, pistons mounted in said tubes, means connecting said pistons and said platform, and springs in said tubes bearing against the under side of said pistons for elevating said pistons and said platform as the ice melts and the weight of the ice decreases.
3. In a refrigerator, a refrigerating compartment, an ice box, a lid for said ice box, a platform mounted in said ice box for supporting a cake of ice which holds said platform in a lowered position, tubes mounted in said ice box, pistons mounted in said tubes, means connecting said pistons and said platform and springs in said tubes bearing against the under side of said pistons for elevating said pistons and said plat form as the ice melts and the weight of the ice decreases, a check valve for controlling the admission ofair into said tubes below saidpistons, and a regulating Valve for regulating the escape of air from said tubes under pressure of said pistons.
