Application filed January Supports or Hangers of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is toprovide an improved front hanger or support for ordinary se1ni-elliptical side springs and especially for the side-springsof a platform-spring construction adapted and intended more particularly for use in connection with automotive trucks of the Ford type.
More specifically, the object is to provide a hanger or support, of the character noted,
' which is constructed to relieve the chassis channels of undue strain by providing means for tying the hanger to the sub-sill.
A subsidiary object is to provide a hanger or support which, while simple in construction, presents the requisite strength against breakage or distortion.
The invention is fully disclosed in the accompanying drawing, in which the application of the hanger, or its installation on the automotive vehicle, is shown. Like reference-characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views. The diiferent views of the invention shown in the drawing may be briefly described as follows:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of the frame and body of an automotive truck, showing my hangers installed in position thereon;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view, on the plane of the section line 2-2, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows indicated thereon;
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation of one of my hangers; and
Figure 4 is a View in end thereof.
Referring, now, in detail to the drawing:
The hanger or support for each of the two side springs 1, 1 is a one-piece structure, by preference, and, for this purpose, may be made as a casting, comprising a base 2, hid/V". ing a central, longitudinal strengthening rib or flange 3 an upstanding lug 4: at the forward end of the base and bored, as shown at 5', for the reception o-fa pin 6 of a shackle 7 for the forward end of the side spring 1; a

rear wall '8 atright-angles to and rising from the base 2, and provided,"toward its top,- with bolt holes'12, 12 and, at itsbot tom, an extension 9' depending below the base 2 and having rearward-projecting, lateral lugs 10, 10', bolt- holes 12, 12 being bored through the lugs and the extension 9; side 2 and united with the rear wall 8 and connected toward their top by a bridge 14.
In use, the hanger is disposed beneath one of thesub-sills 15 of the automotivevehicle body, with the bridge'14 bearing against said subsill and with the rear wall 8 bearing against the chassis-channel 11,
and withthe lugs 10,10 projected under said chassis-channel and bearing upwardly thereagainst, as shown in Fig. 2. Bolts 16. are projected through the bolt- holes 12, 12 in the rear-wall 8 of the hanger and through registering bolt-holes in angles17 disposed on the opposite side of the channel 11, and nuts 18 are tightened up on the threaded ends of the bolts. Similar bolts 19 are projected through the bolt- holes 12, 12 in the rear wall extension 9 and through registering bolt-holes in the angles 17, and
nuts 20 are tightened up on the threaded ends of the bolts. By means of-the bolts 16 and 19 and the nuts 18 and 20,the hanger is firmly clamped to or against the chassischannel 11. 'U-bolts 21 pass over the subsills 15, 15 and through vbolt-holes'22, 22 in each of the bridges 14 of the hangers, nuts 7 being screwed on the threadedends of the U-bolts below the bridges 14, 14, whereby the hangers are supported or suspended from the sub-sills 15, 15, and undue stress and strain is taken away from the chassischannels 11, 11. It will be noted that, if no means were provided for suspending or supportingthe hangers from the sub-sills 15, 15, the entire strain and stress of the hangers would be upon the channels 11, 11, which is objectionable. 7
Having thus fully described in invention, what I claim as new and esire to secure by Letters-Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination, in an automotive vehicle, of a longitudinal chassis-channel, a longitudinal sub-sill, a side spring, and a support or hanger supporting the front end of said spring and comprising a casting having a base, a rear wall rising therefrom' and bearing against said chassis-channel, two side walls also rising from saidfbase and united to said rear wall, a bridge connecting said side Walls and bearing against the bottorn'o'f said sub-sill, and means pass ing through said bridge for-suspending said support from said sub-sill.
2. The combination, in an automotive-i e hicle, of a longitud nal chassis-channel, a-
longitudinal sub-sill, a side spring, and a support or hanger: supporting the front end of said spring.- and. comprising a ;casting having a base, a rear wall rising therefrom and bearing against the bottomof said subsill, and means passing through said-bridge for suspending said support from said subsills In testimony whereof, Ihereunto affix my signature.
