and I do `declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description'of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the artk towhich itappertains to make and use :the same.` v
My invention `relates to improvements in hooks such as Vthosens'ed on numerous kinds of hoisting .devices and the like, and the present disclosure is directed to a hook which is designed primarily for hoisting sucker rods, although'the construction shown is by f no means limitedf to] this use.
fIt is the objectofthe invention to provide a simple and inexpensive, yet avery desirable structure embodying a` guard for the hook which normally prevents it `from disengaging from thememberk with which it :is engaged, andto provide novel, manually f controlled releasing meansfor the guard,
said means also acting, in the present disclosure, tohold the guard in operative position. ,f
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanyin drawing. y
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved hook engaged with the usual stirrups of a sucker rod elevator.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, partly in elevation showing the guard moved to released position. Y
Figure 3 is an edge view partly broken away and in section.
In the drawing above brielly described, the numeral 1 designates the shank of the hook, which shank is provided at its lower end with a bill 2 in opposed relation with the front edge of the shank. The upper end of this shank has been shown suitablyswiveled at 3 to a plate 4 which is pivotally ymounted in a hoisting yoke 5, connected with a part 6 of a hoistingmechanism. It will be understood however that the hook could well be carried by a part or parts other than those shown. v
At 7, a U-shaped guard has been shown, said guard normally extending `across the throat of the hook and having its two arms 8 pivoted against oppositesides of the shank n i 1, as indicated at9, the pivotal connections beinggdisposedbetween the yends of the arms y8, but adjacent the freeends of `said arms,
which ends are preferably of substantially circular form as indicated at 10. t
lA releasing device 11 is provided forthe guard 7, said releasing'device comprising an yelongated back 12 spaced outwardly from the rear edge of thek shank 1, and a pair of spacedside walls 13 whichare preferably integraliwith said'back and project therefrom into engagement with opposite sides of the hook shank. In the present disclosure, the lower ends of the kwalls 13 are formed with notches 1li loosely receiving the rounded ends 10 of the guard arms 8, so that when the device 11 is forced from theposi tion of Fig. 1 to that otFig. 2, the guard 'will be released. Y i
v I employ means movably mountingthe re- `leasingdevicell upon the shankl, said device being preferably pivotally mounted at rits upper end. YTo accomplishthis mounting, I have'illustratedallug 1,15 extending Vrearwardly from the upper end of theshank 1,-finto a recess 16 in the upper end ot" the back 12, a pin17 being` passedthrough said lug and through the upper ,end of thelback 12, as shown.
A spring 18 is confined between the shank 1 and the back 12 for thel purpose of normally moving the device 11 outwardly to the position of Fig. 1, so as to hold the guard 8 in operative position. This spring is pret erably formed from a strip of spring metal bent upon itself with its reaches disposed in contact with the shank 1 and back 12 respectively and said shank is by preference provided with a shoulder 19 at the lower end ofthe releasing device 11, which shoulder engages the free end of one reach of the spring 1S while the lng 15 is `disposed `at the opposite end of the spring. Thus, this spring is positively held against dislocation and loss.
The parts normally'stand as shown in Fig. 1, so that the hook is held against release from the usual stirrups 19 of a sucker rod Vor tubing elevator, or any other member or msk The device is simple and inexpensive, yet will be reliable and in every Vway desirable, and as excellent results are obtained from the details disclosed, they are preferably followed. However,vw ithin thev scope of the invention as claimed, numerous modifica-V tions may be made.
Iclaim: L Y i l. A device of the class describedcomprisinga'hook having a` shank and a bill in opposed relation with a part ofsaid shank, a U-shaped guard for the 'bill having its two arms pivoted between their ends to opposite sides of the shank, a releasing device for the guard comprising a back spaced outwardly from the rear edge of the shank, and spaced side walls extending from said back and disposed at said sides of the shank, said walls having pivotal connection with the free ends of the aforesaid arms of the guard for releasing the latter when said back is forced toward the shank, meansmovably mounting said releasing device on said shank, and a spring confined rbetween said back and said shank for normally forcing the formerv outwardly.
2. A device lof the class described'comprising ra hook having a shank and a bill in opposed relation with a part of said shank, a U-shaped guard for the bill having its two arms pivoted between their ends to opposite sides ofthe shank, a releasing device forthe guard comprising a back spaced outwardly from the rear edge of the shank, 'and spaced sidewalls extending from said back anddisposed at said sides of the shank, said walls lhaving notches loosely receiving the free ends'of the aforesaid arms to move A In testimony the guard to released position when the aforesaid back is forced toward the: shank, means movably mounting said vreleasing device on said shank, and a spring confined 'between said back V and said shank for normally forcing the former outwardly.
3. A device of the class described comprising a hook having a shank and abill in opposed relation with a part of said shank, a U-shaped guardcfor thebi-ll having its two arms. pivoted between their ends-5to op- 'positesides of theshank, a` releasingdevice for the guard kcomprising a back spaced outwardly from-the' rear edge ofthe shank, and spaced sidewalls extending fromsaid back and disposed at said sides of theshank, said walls having pivotal connections with .the
freeends of the aforesaid arms of the `guard forreleasmg the ylatter-when said' backls the free end of oneofsaidreaches abutting f the Iaforesaid 'shoulder to prevent endwise =inovement1of the vstripfin .one direction, the
pivotal connection between said vreleasing member andtheshank being disposed to prevent movement of thestrip in the other direction." (I e n Y whereof I have hereunto affixed. my slgnature.
