Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. MCCLEL- LAND, a citizenv of the United States of America, residing at Huntingdon, inthe county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Splash Hoods, of
which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to splash hoods for brick making machines and ymore particularly, machines for makingsilica brick.
In silica brick making machines it `has been found thatthe material from which the bricks are made seriously interferes with themechanism if the material splashes over the moving parts during the mold. filling' operation. The present invention overcomes this objection to a marked degree.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates a part of the reciprocating carriage of a brick making machine (not shown) to which are pivoted as at 2, mold supports or arms upon which is a bottom plate 4 upon which the mold 5 rests. The carriage 1 is adapted to be moved in any approved manner beneath a brick making material feed hopper or chute 6 for the purpose of filling the mold 5.
When a charge of material (not shown) is discharged from the hopper 6 into the mold 5, the material has a tendency to splash or scatter over the adjacent moving parts of the brick making ,machine This splashing is controlled by means of a splash hood 7 arranged beneath and in vertical alignment with the hopper 6.

yand it is then lowered to Figure 3 position just prior to the delivery of a charge of mud from the hopper 6 to the mold. The excess mud or material will splash against the inner walls ofthe splash hood and then drop down at the sides of the mold, upon an endless conveyor, not shown, which returns the. same to the hopper 6. It will be noted that the splash hood is somewhat wider than the mold so that the excess mud -may escape, also that the flared portion 16,

Secured to the frame 10 of the machine are a pair of angle. brackets 20 in which is mounted a small shaft 21, to which is pivoted a pair of arms 22, spaced apart byY spacing blocks 23 and 24.` The spaced arms 22 are connected with the arm 12 by means of a connecting rod 25. Consequently when the arms 22 are raised and lowered about the shaft 21 as an axis, the splash hood will also be raised and lowered.
A cam 31, mounted on a cam shaft 26 secured in bearings 27 in the frame 10, engages a grooved roller 28 mounted ona shaft 29, and thus supports the arms 22. Upon each rotation of the cam shaft 26, which is constantly driven lfrom any suitable source of power (not Shown), they roller 28 engages in the cut away portion 30 of a cam 31, thus causing the arms 22, the arm l2 and the splash hood to drop. This action takes place just prior to the feeding of a charge of mud or material tothe mold, and the hood is almost immediately lifted `as the shaft 26 and cam 3l thereon continue to,Ak
rotate, and the roller 28 rides out of the cut away portion 30 of the cam.' Having thus fully described my-invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I.
l. In a brick making machine, a movable mold carriage and mold therefor, aphopper for feeding brickmaking material tothe mold, a splashhood arranged beneath the hopper and in alignment therewith, and means Afor raising and lowering said hood.
2. In a 'brickmakingmachind a movable mold k carriage and mold therefor movable to and from filling position, a hopper above the filling position for feeding material to the mold, a `splash hood arranged beneath thehopper and in vertical alignment therewith, and means for lowering the splash hood operable ywhensaid mold reaches the filling position.
3. In a brick making machine, a mold support and mold therefor,-means for feeding material to the mold, and a vertically movable splash hood inl vertical alignment with said material feeding means.V
