it known that I. JOHN L. CooNnY, a sftiaen ot' the United States, residing at :ie. in the county of Erie and State of .nnsylrania, have invented new and use- :tul Improvements in Beater Rolls of which the following is a specification.

This invention is designed to improve and simplify the construction of heaters particu larly such heaters as are used in paper mak- It has to do more particularly with the manner of securing the beater blades and the inserts between the blades.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows 1 shows a central vertical section Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 in Fig 1 Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.

1 marks the shaft on which the beater is mounted, 2 end webs or discs mounted on the shaft. and 3 a central disc. Arranged around the disc are the blade rings 4;, these rings having the axial slots 5 extending through them. An annular shoulder 5* eX- tends from the rings and this shoulder is tree of obstructions on its outer surface so that it may be readily machined. Blades 6 are arranged in the slots 5 and rest on the shoulders 5, the shoulders forming abase tor the plates.

lVedge blocks 7 are arranged between the hla des 6 and these blocks form the heads of bolts 8, the bolts extending through the shoulders 5 on the end rings and are provided with nuts 9 on the inner periphery of the rings by which the wedge blocks may be drawn in. thus securing the blades and seating them on the shoulders. The blades are preferably slightly thicker at their inner edges than at their outer edges and thus assist the wedge blocks in looking them in place.

7 ()n the central web bolts 10 extend through the shoulder 5 the heads 11 of these bolts being arranged in pockets in the locking ring 12, the locking ring being formed in segments with ears 13 and are secured to the shoulder by screws 1 1 eX- i through the cars 13. With this istruetion the bolts are put in place and locked inst turning by the locking plate. ll e' ge blocks 15 are arranged between the blades outside the shoulder 5 on the web Those blocks have the sockets 16 which reee re the nuts 17 that the blocks may be ti :ened by clamping the blades in place at the center.

Plates are arranged on the outer faces of the miter webs 2 covering the bolts 9.

l oomn strips 18 are arranged between the blades and between the webs. These correspond in shape and in location radially with the wedge blocks 7 and 15.

ll hat I claim as new is 1. In a heater roll the combination of supporting rings having slotted rims and base shoulders extending from the rims; blades in the slots; and bolts extending through the shoulders and having wedgeshaped heads between the blades.

2. In a heater roll the combination of supporting rings having slotted rims and see shoulders extending from the rims; es in the slots resting on the shoulders; bolts extending through the shoulders and having wedge-shaped heads between the blades.
