BOILER FITTING ORQONNECTION.
Application filed October 20, 1921. Serial No.' 509,074.
Be it known that I,

My invention relates to in boiler fittings or new and Fittings following ALVA ARTHUR LIND- a citizen of the United States, resident of Spokane, in the county of Spo- State of ll ashington,
and a have inuseful Improveor Connections, is a specificaan improvement connections especially adapted for use in conjunction with a boiler of the character shown application for water tube in my copending boiler,'filed April 14, 1921, Serial No. 461,296;
The object of the invention is to provide a boiler connection or ter which eliminates the n fitting of this characecessity of utilizing packing, which is endowed with great strength and rigidity so as to afford a 1 echanical connection as well as a fluid connection and yet at ple capacity the same time have amfor adjustment; and which is in general of simple and durable construction, reliable and and inexpensive to safe in operation and easy manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain novel features of construction, combination of parts which and arrangement will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, to the accompanying part of this specification,
Figure trating the preferred invention, boiler being Figure 2 is a view in cal section;
reference being had drawings forming and in which:
1 is a view in side elevation, illusembodiment of the the adjacent structure of the broken away;
longitudinal verti- Figure 3 is a view in transverse vertical line 2-2 of Fig detached section on Figure 1 is a nection or coupling, ranged in one of its angul Figure 5 is a ure 1; view of the conshowing the same arar positions; and
detail view, illustrating the connection of the bolt head to the coupling flanges.
Referring the sake of ferred embodiment of the invention, the
H and H numerals designate boilers which are connected or coupled by means of a fitting, designated at ing the present invention.
K and constitutvide a ground joint therebetween.
, periphery This fitting includes connections 01" coupling members, designated at and 11. The coupling members are welded or otherw se secured to the boilers andare provided with axial openings or bores 12 and 13, respectively which extend through the coupling members and open into the interior of the boilers. The coupling members are provided with sockets or seats, designated at 14k and 15, respectively and extending laterally from the coupling members adjacent said seats are coupling which are arranged in opposed or confronting relation in the assembly. A ball, designated generally at is preferably constructed of brass and is arranged between the coupling members 10 and 11. The ball 20 comprises two semi-spherical sect- ions 21 and 22 having their abutting faces 21 and 22 machined or otherwise, formed to pro- The periphery of the ball and the surface of the seats 14: and 15 are also machined or otherwise formed to provide a ground joint between the ball and these seats. The
sections 21 and a frusto-coiiical opening, and 22", respectively,
openings having their smaller ends arranged at the center and their large-r ends at the of the ball whereby the walls of the opening contract or converge toward the center and diverge or flare outwardly toward the periphery of the ball. Bolts and nuts, designated at 25 coact with the coupling flanges 16 and 17. and secure the coupling members to sections of the ball in assembl Bolt heads 25 of the bolts 25 operate on curved bosses 26 provided on the coupling flanges and the shanks of the bolts 25 adjacent the bolt heads 25 operate in double frusto-conical openings 27 provided therefor in the coupling flanges and presentin a fulcrum or ridge 28 on which the shank of the bolt operates. By associating the bolts and the coupling flanges in this manner the angular disposition of the coupling flanges which occurs when the coupling members are disposed in angular relation with respect to each other-is compensated for.
In use when the fitting is in assembly and the bolts and nuts 25 are tightened they operate by means of the coupling flanges 16 and 17 to draw the coupling members 10 flanges 16 and 17 v and 11 toward each other and cause the coupling membersto powerfully engage the sections of the ball and the sections of the bolt. to powerfully engage each other with the ground joint between the sections of the ball and the seats of the coupling members and the ground joint between the contacting faces between the sections of the ball operate to make the connections steamtight. By constructing the sections of the ball with frusto-conical openings and relating these frusto-conical openings in the manner described the ball presents a cross section which is well adapted to stand up under the compression strains to which it is subjected and at the same time afford a passage for the steam or other fluid through the connection. Moreover the pressure is effective to supplement the action of the bolts in forcing the sections of the ball into engagement with each other. The sectional ball facilitates the assembly and disassembly as well as the adjustment of the fitting and especially so in the crowded spaces in which the invention is usually utilized. In this manner the invention provides a boiler fitting or connection which eliminates packing and provides the necessary strength and rigidity to afford a mechanical as well as a fluid connection.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a pair of coupling members having axial openings and seats, a ball consisting. of semispherical sections having a ground joint between their contacting faces, the sections of the ball being received on the seats of the coupling members and ground joint being provided between the sections of the ball and the seats of the couplings, the sections of the ball having comi-nunicating openings there in, couplin flanges carried by the coupling members and bolts coacting with said coupling members and bolts coacting with said coupling flanges for securing the coupling members and ball in assembly. 7
2. In a device of the character described, a pair of coupling members having seats, a ball consisting of semi-spherical sections coacting with said seats, said sections and said seats having a ground joint between them, and means for maintaining said coupling members and said ball in engagement-with each other.
3. In a device of the character described,
a pair of coupling members having seats. a
ball received on said seats. said seats and said ball having a ground joint between them and means tor clamping saidcou'pling members in engagement with said ball in any of a plurality of angular p sitiojns with respect to each other comprising coupling flanges carried by the coupling members and bolts and nuts coacting with thecoupling flanges, said bolts including a head and a shank and said coupling-flanges having a curved boss provided with an elongated a double trusteopening, the flange having conical opening presenting a fulcrum upon which the shank of the bolt operates.
