IMPROVEMENT IN POCKET CANDLE-SAFES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,442, dated August 25, 1874; application filed April 7, 1874.

To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR BAEBARIN, of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Pocket Candle-Safe; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specication.

The object of my invention is to produce a simple, cheap, safe, reliable, and clean pocket candle-safe, by means of which pieces of ordinary candles, as well as candles manufactured for such purposes, may be employed, with the same advantages for illuminating or other purposes 5 but my invention will be better understood by referring to the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, whereon-V Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, aiperspective view of' the same surrounded with a match-safe; and Fig. 3, a sectional view of Fig. 1.

Fig. l represents a cylindrical candle-safe, A, (with an open top and closed bottom) of any suitable size and material. B is the cap of the same, made to fit tightly around the shoulder a upon the open part of the candlesafe, and provided with an inner central thimble, b, and outer projection c, so that both the projection and the thimble, into which one end of the caudle'is inserted, may easily be made to enter into the candle-safe A, for purposes hereinafter described.

`As will be seen uponthe drawings, the central thimble b of the cap B is made to hold the candle employed for illuminating or other purposes by simply inserting one end of the latter, and pressing the same into it, so that it may be made to support the candle firmly Within the candle-safe A, when the cap B is inverted, as shown at Fig. 1, as well as to support the candle outside of the candle-safe,

when the candle is withdrawn from the same, and the projection c is either introduced into the open part of the candle-safe, as shown at Fig. 3, or placed upon a table-thus, in the first instance, confining the candle within the walls of the candle-safe A when the instrument isto be carried in the pocket, and, in the other instance, fully exposing the wick of the candle to the direct action of the ame, intended to ignite the same, while the space d, between the outer surface of the thimble c and the inner surface of the cap B, serves the purpose of a receptacle for any melted fatty substance which may trickle from the candle during combustion.

As a means of precaution in having a read supply of matches always on ha-nd, I may surround the candle-safe A with an additional match-safe, D, as shown at Fig. 2, with the bottom or sides of the same sufficiently roughened, so as to present one or more rough surface-s for the prompt ignition of the matches rubbed against the same. vIn this instance the candle-safe A should be made higher than the match-safe D, and the latter not deeper than the length of ordinary matches, (unless a false bottomapplied to the same be used,) so that on placing the projection c of the cap B into the open top of the candle-safe A, as shown atFig. 2, sufcient room may be left to admit of a free movement of the fingers in withdrawing the lnatches from their safe without upsetting the cap, and the candle supported by the candle-safe A, and the size of the cap B, when the match-safe D is employed in connection with the candle-safe A, should be sufficiently enlarged so as to encircle the shoulder c, which, in that case, is placed upon the upper open part of the match-safe in lieu of being placed upon the upper part of the candle-safe A, as in the rst instance.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The candle-safe A and reversible cap B provided with a thimble, b, space d, and outer projection c, the whole being combined and arranged to operate substantially as described.
