Fig, 1
ATTORNEY Patented June 30, 1925.
UNITED STATES GEORGE W. OSBORN, 0F CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OHIO.
GAUGE-COCK WEIGHT.
Application filed July 29,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE TV. OssonN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland Heights, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gauge- Cock lVeights, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of this invention are to provide adjustable features for a self closing gauge cock for a steam boiler, of the type which is closed by a weight. The provision of adjustable features in'this device makes it possible to take up the wear upon the valve pencil as fast as it occurs. and a sufficient number of adjustments are provided to take up the entire possible wear of the pencil, thereby making the device much safer, and more economical "in use, also the construction permits the adjustment of the arm of the weight to be made without removing the weight from the valve stem, thereby preventing the operator from being injured by escaping steam.
The invention comprises a quick acting screw threaded valve stem, adjustable in the body of the gauge cock, the outer end of which passes through the arm of a weight and it includes also'an arm having an opening through which the said stem passes, and a recess having an inclined side wall and countersunk in the inner face of the arm, the side wall of said recess being provided with projections having inclined sides, and said valve stem being provided with a multiple number of radial and outwardly tapered projections or teeth having inclined sides which can be brought in turn, by revolving the weight into engagement in the grooves between said projections in the side wall of said recess.
It includes clamping means for securing the arm of the weight in adjusted position upon said valve stem.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In these drawings, Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of the valve and stem, Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the weight and arm attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a. perspective ,of the weight and arm, Fig. 4 is a perspective 1922. Serial N'o. 578,508.
In these views A. is a screw threaded valve stem, B. is the weight and C. is the arm.
The valve stem is provided with a reduced outer end D. which passes through a. circular opening E in the arm C andengages the wall thereof.
A circular recess F is formed in the inner side of said arm which comprises an enlargement of said opening I Upon the longitudinal side of said recess are arranged a purality of projections or teeth G. G. preferably six in number. In the grooves between these teeth are'engaged a multiple number of teeth H. H: the latter teeth being preferably twice vas many in number, said teeth GQG. projecting longitudinally from aflange or' shoulder which terminates the screw threaded inner" portion of the valve stem.
A clamping nut J. upon the outer end of the reduced portion of the valve stem forces this shoulder against the inner face of the arm, and retains the arm in adjusted positions.
The teeth H. are preferably made of such length as to engage the inner shoulder K, between the bearing E and the recess F. thus making the connection rigid.
This construction provides for the adjustment of the weight in many positions and since the recess F is shallow the arm can'be withdrawn from contact with the teeth H,
without removing the arm from the reduced end of the valve stem, thus protecting the operator from escaping steam.
L is the valve, casing M. is the valve seat and N. is the removable valve pencil whichv is made of soft metal so as not to injure the valve seat. Since this pencil wears rapidly when pressed against the seat-by the weight, it is necessary to provide the adjusting means described.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a self-closing gauge cock, a valve casing, a screw-threaded valve stem rotatable therein, an arm thereon, rotatable therewith, a weight on said arm, said arm provided with an openin through which said valve stem passes, said opening being enlarged at angular adjustment of the inner side of said arm to form arccess havingan inclined side wall, spaced bevelled projections upon the inclined Wall of'said opening, and spaced and bevelledprojections upon said valve stem, engageable in 'corre-r sponding grooves formed by the projections upon said inclined wall, permitting quick said arm and weight upon said valve stem, and a slight amount of movement thereof along said stem, the outer portion of the stem forming a'bearing upon vwhich said arm iswithdrawable and rests While angular adjustment thereof is being made. a
2. In a self-closing gauge cock, a valve casing, a screw-threaded valve stem rotat-' able therein, an arm thereon, rotatable therewith, a Weight on said arm, said arm provided with an opening through which said valve stem passes, said opening being enlarged at the inner side of said arm to form a a recess having an inclined side wall, spaced bevelled projections upon the inclined wall .ofsaid opening and spaced and bevelled projections upon said-valve stem, engageablein 7 corresponding grooves formed by the 'projections' upon said inclined wall, permitting 'quick angularj adjustment: of said arm and weight upon said valve stem, and a slight amount" of movement thereof along said stem, the outer portion of the stem rforming V a bearing upon which said arm is withdrawable and rests, while angular adjustment thereof is being'ma'de, and means for clamping said arm upon sai'd'valve' stemL 3. In a self-closing gauge cook, a valve casing, a screw-threaded valve stem rotatable therein, an arm thereon, aweight on said arm, said arm provided with an opening through which said valve stem passes, a clamping nut upon the outer extremity of said valve stem, said valve stem provided- With an annular shoulder, and with radial teeth outwardly tapering from said annular:
In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand this 4' day of J anuary 1922,v
' GEORGE WJVOSBORN.
In presence of a J CHAS; F; SIPE',
