METHOD OF MAKING HINGES Filed Nov. 1, 1922 Patented June 30, 1925.
i UNITED STATES:
JAMES P. MCKINNEY, 33., OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.- 1
METHOD or MAKING HINGES.
Application filed No vember 1, 19 22. Serial No. 598,361.
To aZZ whO m z'tmay concern. p I Be it known that I, J AMES P. MOKlNNEY, J12, a citizen of the United Statesgandresidentof Pittsburgh, in the county ofAllegheny and State of Pennsylvania,'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Methods of Making Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a method of forming hinges, and more especially what are known as butt-hinges. There is a type of butt-hinges on the market which is provided with anti-friction bearings interposed between the knuckles,
either in the form of ball-bearings or Washers formed ofanti-friction metal, so that the doorconnected up to said hinges will swing easily and without noise, and atthe same time the wear'onthe hinges will be reduced to a minimum. 3 Y
In order to secure these bearings in place on the middle knuckle of one of the leaves of the hinge, so as to be freely movable thereon and yet held from becoming misplaced when the leaves are separated, it has been customary to employ a bushing in said knuckle, said bushing extending beyond the ends of said knuckle to receive the bearings, whereupon the bushing is flared at the ends to hold the bearings securely in position on the knuckle. To provide for the insertion of this bushing it is necessary to drill the bore in the knuckle of a larger size than the other knuckles, the bushing when inserted forming a bore in the knuckle of the same size as the bores in the other knuckles for the reception of the connecting pintle.
In the formation of the knuckles the metal lugs from which the knuckles are formed are all bent at one operation, and the drill is then inserted to give an accurate bore to receivethe pin. here the bushing is employed in the middle knuckle, however, as stated above, it is necessary to drill the bore in the middle knuckle larger than the bores in the other knuckles, and to do this it was necessary to pry open either the lower or upper knuckle sufiiciently to allow the drill to have access to the middle knuckle. This bending of the metal back after it had once been bent was very inconvenient and troublesome, and furthermore the bending of the metal back after having once been bent tended to weaken the metal at this point, and after the large bore had been drilled in the middle knuckle the metal of the upper or lower knuckle had to be bent back to its original shape. After this the smaller drill was inserted to drill the upper and lower knuckles with bores corresponding to the bore formed by the bushing to receive the,
connecting pintle. I
The object of my invention is to provide a method of forming such hinges without the necessity of bending back or opening up the metal of one of the butts to insert the large drill to drill the 'bore in the middle knuckle, thereby greatly reducing the time required in drilling and consequently re'-' ducing the cost of manufacture.
To these ends my invention consists, gen-- erally stated, in drilling the bo'res'in the upperand middle knuckles at the same time both ofthe same diameter, that'is, so that the middle knuckle when the'bushingis in serted therein will have a'bore'o'f a diameter equal to the lower kn'uckle, and employing a connecting pintle with an enlarged portion at its upper end fitting snugly within the large bore formed in the upper knuckle at the same time that the correspondingly sized opening was formed in the middle knuckle to receive the bushing.
In theaccompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a View of two leaves of a butt-hinge separated and showing the large bore being drilled in the upper and middle knuckle; and Fig. 2 shows the assembled hinge.
In the drawing, the numeral 2 designates one leaf of an ordinary butt-hinge, and 3 the other leaf. The leaf 2 has the lugs to form the knuckles 4:, 5 and 6 bent in the ordinary manner. A suitable drill 7 is inserted in the upper knuckle 4, and the bore in said knuckle increased to the size of said drill, whereupon the drill then passes into the middle knuckle 5 to form a bore of like size therein. When the drill has passed through both knuckles 4 and 5 it is withdrawn, and the lower knuckle 6 is then drilled by the introduction of a drill of smaller diameter than the drill 7, and said knuckle 6 is also tapped'to form the seat 8.
A bushing 9 is then inserted in the middle knuckle 5, said bushing being preferably formed of a split-tube which fits snugly in the bore, and is of a length to project beyond both ends of said knuckle. The bushing within the knuckle forms a bore through said knuckle corresponding to the size of the bore in the lower knuckle 6.
A connecting pint-1e 12 passes downthrough the knuckles 4, 5 and 6, as wellas through the knuckles 13 and 14 of the leaf 3 which have been drilled in the ordinary manner to form bores corresponding to the bores in the knuckles 5 and 6 of the leaf 2.
' 13 and 14 of the leaf 3.
This pintle has the enlarged upper portion 15 which fits snugly in the correspondingly sized bore in the knuckle 4 formed by the large drill 7, while the main shank 16 of said pintle is of smaller diameter to fit snugly in the bushing 9 and the bore in the knuckle 6, as wellas the bores in the knuckles The upper end of the pintle 12 has the customary spherical top 16*, and the correspondingly shaped. bottom piece 17 is screwed into the threaded seat 8 in the lower knuckle 6.
By my invention, therefore, I provide the bore for the bushing 9 in the' middle knuckle without having to pry or open up'one of the'upper or lower knuckles in order to get the drill into said middle knuckle to form open up one of the knuckles,or by bending the central knuckle before end knuckles. V
What I claim is:
bending the two The method of forming butt-hinges,
which consists in providing a leaf member having three vertically spaced knuckles, drilling bores in the upper knuckle and middle knuckle of said leaf at one'drilling operation, making the opening in said middle knuckle sufficiently large to receive a bushing having a bore corresponding to the bore subsequently drilled in the lower knuckle,
drilling said bore in said lower knuckle, inserting the bushing in said middle knuckle,
providing a second leaf having two knuckles with bores, and connectingthe knuckles of the hinge by a pintle having an enlarged 7 upper portion, and a. reduced shank, by fitting the enlarged upper portion in the bore of the upper knuckle and the reduced shank portion in said bushing and the bores of the remainingknuckles of thehinge. V
In testimony whereof I, thesaidjJAMEs P. MoKINnEY, Jr., have hereunto set my hand. 7 a
