To all whom it may concern: H w p Be it known that I, W LTER E. MnnRAY, a; citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Dodge, in the county of lVebsterand State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safe-DoorAttachments, of which the following is a specification. r
The present invention relates to improvements in safe door attachment and aims to vary andrearrange certain present constructions in order to render it impossible for avoiding the unlockingof the door from the interior of a bank safety vault or the like.
Bank robbers have frequentlyresorted to the practice of driving all of the hank officialsat the point of a gun into the vault after removing all of the money and valuables and then looking these same officials to avoid escape and the possibility of sounding an alarm before the bandits have effected their escape and eluded any possible immediate pursuers.

Other objects of the invention are to accomplish this result' without requiring any great'change in standard constructions and in modifying and rearranging a part of the present construct-ion so that it may replace the present device at small cost and will afford the same cooperation with associated elements so as to tightly; close the door to avoid the 'flowi'ng of nitroglycerin liquid beneath the door flanges'or l'aminations';
Still further obj ects' of: the invention are to provide a device that may be dismounted from its normal, operative position and stored or hidden awayflini the bank during banking hours and only'replaced at the end- .of the banking day when the vault or safe door is to be closed and locked for the night; this removable part being, necessary to the door closing mechanism and such that the door cannot be barred by the closing mechanism without its use to enable the attention in removing and replacing this part to be conducted without burden or possible forgetfulness, and to make the construction of such a character as to afford no expedient to thethie ves to lock the door. from without.

Referring more p arti cularlyto the drawings, 7 designates the face panel of a vault and 8 the door which is, composed as usual of laminated plates 9' shown in Figure 2. Theseplates are of steel and they cooperate with similar faces in the panel 7, the meeting faces of bothdoor and panelbeing ground to fit accurately and; faithfully so that no crevices are'pres'e'nted for the introduction of the liquid nitroglycerin.
The door is inovably suspendedupon the large and heavy hinge 10 havingarms 1 1 at its'ou'termost ends extending. toward; the center of the door and other arms 12 inwardly of the arms 11- and extending in an opposite' direction. Both sets of arms are perforated to receive respectively the pivot pins 13 and 14 by which the. hinge structure'is securedto the straps 1'5 riveted or otherwise affixed to the door 8 andtothe straps 16 secured in alike manner to the panel 7. The hinge structure thus describedoperates in a well known manner to permit thedoor 8' to swing about the vertical pivots. l3 and to therebyv accommodate itself closely to the surface of the panel against which the lam-i-v nated plates 9 engage and in this way a tight fit is effected. v v U The combination locking: mechanism is indicated generally at 17 although this forms no part of the invention and is not there fore illustrated in detail.- I
The mechanism for tightly closing the vdoor is also of the usual construction and is shown more clearly anddescribed as follows The'hand wheel is indicated at 18 and extends into the casing 19 in acustomary manner and in accordance with the general a construction, within the casing'is a worm gearmechanism, also well known, by which 1 the'rotation'of the hand wheel'18 communicates alike movement to the shaft 20 which extends horizontally and 'diametricallyacross thedoor 8 and is carried in the brackets 21 allixedj to the door: with projecting ends beyondfithe brackets and beyond the edge of the door having the crank arms 22 and the eccentric pins '23. For this purpose a block. 29 is carried by the panel 7 having a slot'30 open at its upper end to receive the crank pin 23 and the block is affixed to the'door. I
By engaging thepin 23 with the slot 30 and then further rotating the hand wheel 18 it will be apparent that the engagement of the pin with the wall of the slot 30" and the engagement of the opposite crank pin with its member-24: will cause the door to be'forced'inwar'dly in'a direct axial line such as will cause the faces of thevarious 7 plates 9 of the door to accurately and closely provided to receive them.

The socket member is; secured to the panel? as by the use of countersunk screws '35. The construction is such, as apparent from Figures 3 and 6, as to enable the lifting'of'the' block 29 out of the socket member without difliculty or inconvenience,
while the construction presented exhibits all of thenecessary strength and sturdiness to withstand the pressure put upon this-device in effectinga closing of thedoor.
Now the improved device has this very desirable advantage that it enables theblock 29 to be removed by the cashier in the morning when first opening the safe or vault door and the cashier may conceal this block 7 29 all during banking hours in some con-' 'venient place wherehold-up men wouldnot be apt to discover it. In the absence of the block 29 the door 8 could be closed and locked by the combination locks but immediately those confined could open the 'door without any hindrance from the door clos ing mechanism, inasmuch as the crank for to eccentric pin 23 would have no engagement The flanges 32 upon the block 29 are thick and substantial and they present relatively large surfaces against the wallsof the socket 33 and the structure of socket and plug is such that the same durability and strength obtainsinthis divided structure as heretofore existing in the permanent one-piece device. The new 'device is therefore in no way the inferior of its predecessor. l Y a It is to be noted that the change. from the old to the new is accomplished'at a minimum of expense and withv an easy, re-
placement and without sacrificing anyof' the advantages or changing the mode of operation of the existing apparatus.

In combination, a door panel, a door hinged thereto, locking mechanism for the door, door closing mechanism including a shaft journaled upon the door and having projecting eccentric pins, means at the hinged side of the door for permanently engaging; the eccentric pin at this side, a slotted and flanged block to receive the eccentric pin at the opposite side and a socket member afiixed to the panel for detachably receiving said slotted and flanged block.
4. In combination With a vault or safe door and closing apparatus therefor, a device secured to the vault for securing the door in closed position, said device including an essential cooperating part adapted to be removed when the vault or safe is open to prevent unauthorized securing of the door in closed position. i
