lGARBAGE RECEPTACLE. p
` Application filed' January 31, 1924. Serial No'. 689,793.
To aZZ'wzom tfmayconcern-r' Y l Be itknown that I', CATH'ARINE lLimmen- GER, a citizenI oflthe'l'lnited-"States, and re'- siding at Newark, in the county of Essex and State 'of New-J`ersey,`have (invented.
certain new and ,useful Improvements' 1n Garbage Receptacles, of' which the foll'owing isa` specification.
This invention relates-to improvements; in receptacles forA refuse and* waste com:' moditles, such" as garbage, ashes and' the like, the sameVY being temporarily contained therein until' a convenient time .for their eventual disposition. One of thel objects of t-lieinvention is to provide a receptacle havingV a normally closed cover that` can befopened, inan instant and ready manner by contact of the foot against the bail or handle when'f iti's desired to enter articles.
Another purpose is to produce-a receptacle in which the cover is automatically opened by manipulating the container when .discharging its contents.
A further aim is in the provision of a strong, neat appearing can that can be used without soiling the hands or clothing and which is relatively inexpensive to construct.
These several aims and objects are accomplished by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention showing the cover closed.
Figure 2 is a partial side elevational view of the same.
Figure 3 is a similar fragmentary View showing the cover in a raised position.
Figure 4 is a side view of the complete can showing a modified means for attaching the fiXed portion of the cover.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a cylindrical metal can, of any preferred dimension, having a beaded bottom 11 and a pair of ears 12 secured by rivets 13, these ears being 50 bent to stand away from the can sides and are provided with the usual openings for receiving the bail.
Said bail 14 may be a semi-circularly bent wire, or have a handle loop 14 as preferred, its-ends 15" being inturnedto engage inthe ears/12))V Pia-T EN ole-Free .Y l
back, the handle being; midway between the ears:
handleI 1'6,`that side'bein'g considered as they Ai partial lid orA cover 17' is' lsecured by a bead 12,8YA enshroudin-g-t'he bead 19 enclosinga wire' surrounding the top of the' can,
stiffening;l and' re-enforcing thesame;
The inner, chordal edge of the fixedf'cover' lors element?` is provided with extensions that Vare coiled to produce hinge elements; 20" encircling'- the hinge pin 21,v two of` which are preferably employed and having adjacent them similarly coiled elements 22" formed",
on-the-movablel cover-23 ,a stopj24'is also integr-ally formed'. oni theV fixed" cover 'limit'- ing-` the opening. movement ofS the vhinged portion of the cover;
A skirt like'depending flange 25l is formed on the cover 23, the same having a partial bead 26 at its edges, the flange 25 being widened as at 27 at opposite points directly over the ears 12 and the ends of the widened or broadened portions of the flange are curved slightly upward as at 28.
A pair of cam-like plate elements 29, generally triangular in contour, are attached to the bail 14 by rigidly engaging in looped eyes 30 formed on the plates, the bail passing therethrough near their pivotal elements 15 which also pass through the plates as clearly shown.
In-reaching curved lugs or cams 31 eX- tend towards the can body in position to normally make contact with the elements 28 of the cover and disposed at right angles thereto are similar ini-'caching lugs or cams 32 adapted to make contact with the forward ends of the elements 27 when the position of the bail is reversed. v
The normal position of the parts, when the coverris completely closed is shown in soV Figures 1 and 2 and it will be obvious that l the same is touched by the foot or otherwise closed.
When the bail is used in carrying the receptacle it will be vertical and central,
asis apparent, neither of the' cams, at that time being in Contact with the outstandingv flange. p v
The contents are removed by grasping the handle 16, the bail lll, being turned into a reversed position as shown in Figure 4, at
which time the cam lugs 32 make contact' with the flanges 27, opening the Vhinged cover and presenting no obstruction to the passage of material outward, the can being then in a tilted position.
Inl the modification, shown in Figure 4 -the'cover element 17, in place of'being permanently securedby the beading, is provided with outwardly extending lugs 33 Y formed integrally along itsedges, the same y formof arrangements, proportions, sizes.
and; details thereof may `bemade without departing from -the scopel of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and deslre to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A'can having apair of ears, a bail pivv otallyconnected thereto, of a sectional cover, onel section being rigidly connected to the can and the other section hinged to the first named section, flanges on the hinged section and extending outwardly over Vsaid ears, cam plates fixed to said bail andadapted for engagement With the said flanges to raise the said cover,vwhen the bail is de pressed in one direction and toraise said cover .when the'bail is depressed in the op- Y posite direction, v Y
2. A can having a `pair of ears, a bail pivotally connected to said ears, of' a ysectional cover,` one section rigidly connected to saidcan and the other section hinged tov the first named section, flanges onrthe said hinged section, cam platesfixed .tol said j bail and adapted for engagement with the said cover flanges to elevate the hinged section, when the said bail is adjusted in opposite directions. .l
This specification signed rand this 28 day of January,`1924..
CATHARINE LEHBERGER.
