ORRIN B. ZOLINE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y,, ASSIGNOR TO BRAND & OPPENHEIMER, IN- CORPORATED, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A. CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
PROCESS OF BIAS CUTTING.
Application filed .lune 30, 1923. Serial No. 648,853. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN B. ZOLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and
6 State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Processes of Bias Cutting, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a process of bias- 10 cutting cloth and comprises the steps of producing a tube of cloth in which both the Weft threads and the warp threads run in helical'lines and then cutting said tube in a line parallel to the axis of the tube.
My invention is illustrated by the annexed drawings in which Fig. I represents a piece of woven material which is to be cut on a bias;
Fig. II represents the same piece of material turned into the form of a tube in the manner to be described;
Fig. III represents the same piece of material'cut on the bias in accordance with my invention.
A iece of woven material A is illustrated in Fig. I, the warp threads being indicated by a, the weft threads by b and the selvedges by c. In order to cut this material on the bias, the same is turned into the form of a tube with the threads a and 6 running in helical lines in the manner shown in Fig. II,
and the selvedges c, c are united by sewing or otherwise. The tube is then out along a to any desired degree by varying the angle at which the tube is set when the selvedges 0, a are united, that is to say, by varying the pitch of the helixes formed by the threads.
Instead of uniting the selvedges by sew- I ing, they may be united by any other suitable means.
After the tube has been out into the form shown in Fig. III the material may be used in its full width or it may be divided into strips, all of which will be cut on the bias.
I claim:
The improvement in the art of bias-cutting fabrics which comprises bending woven material having the warp and weft threads thereof extending parallel and perpendicular, respectively, to the selvedge so that the warp and weft threads will lie in helical lines, uniting the edges of the material to form a tube, and then slitting open the tube along a line running parallel to the axis thereof, substantially as described.
ORRIN B. ZOLINE.
