Be it known that l, EnAsTUs E. VViNKLnY, a citizen of thel United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachi-isetts, have invented certain lmprovements in, Matrix- Rolls and Methods of Making the Same, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification7 like reference characters on the drawings indicatirig like parts in the several figures.
The invention relates to a roll or segment having a matrix or mould on its periphery and to a method of and apparatus for male ing such rolls or segments.
lllhile the invention is applicable to matrix rolls adapted for various uses it has been developed With special' reference to sole shaping matrix rolls for leveling shoe soles and will be further explained as applied to such rolls.
ln order that the sole of a. lasted shoe may be` accurately shaped by a leveling roll which rolls along the soleV it is desirable that the rollI be provided on; its periphery with a matrix corresponding to the shape which is toK be given to the solo. It is also desirable that the pressure yapplied by the roll to the sole, or'at least to the comparatively flat portions thereof such as the forepart, should be a rolling pressurey applied Without lengthwiseslip. Such p arts of the matrix may be generated by causing the axis about which the plastic body rotates as it progresses along the pattern t0 follow a. path not parallel but bearing a predetermined relation to the surface of the pattern along its medial line.
ln forming either the cylindrical concentric part of the matrix or the eccentric bulging part the methodis generically the same since in either case the matrix is generate-d by the pattern form in a plasticmaterial which is rotated about an axis having a relative movement lengthwise of the form the rate of which 'bears a predetermined relation to the speed of rotation and the path of which hears a predetermined relation to the surface of the form along its medial line, the path of movement depending upon the action which it is desired that the matrix of the leveling roll shall have as the roll travels along the shoe sole.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings in connection ,with the making of a level-ing roll intended' for use in leveling shoes having high arch shan-hs and will be further explained iny this connection.

The matrix also has a shank portion 4 which departs from the contour of the forepart and then gradually approaches or merges with a surface of revolution 6 near or at the heel breast line. In making this roll by the Ymethod of the present invention a facsimile of the matrix on the roll is first generated in the periphery of a roll of plastic material by a: facsimile of the sole to be produced and the matrix thus generated is then reproduced in implastic material as for instance by utilizing the generated matrix as a. pattern from which to cast a metal leveling roll.
The matrix may be conveniently generated in the plastic inaterialbythe appa-` ratus shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3. As here shown a. pattern form 8 which is a duplicate or facsimile of that to be given to a shoe sole by the completed leveling roll is supported between two guide plates 10, the upper edges of which form guides which support and guide a. plasticcarrying roll which travels over the Vpattern form. The pattern may be a leveled shoe sole or a form having the shape of a. leveled shoe sole. The plastic body carrying roll is provided with cylindrical heads l2 which rest on the guides and with a tapered and ribbed core 14- secured to the heads by screws 16. The heads are provided on their outer ends with gears 18, the pitch surfaces of which coincide with the cylindrical surfaces of the heads and these gears are engaged by racks 2O arranged along the outer sides of the guide plates. The racks are pivotally supported at'one end so that they may rise and fall with the roll as it rolls along the guides and they are .held in engagement with the gears by guide stirrups 22 hungon trunnions 24; on the heads. The parts are maintained in proper relation by a shaft 26 passing through the roll and having retaining collars 28 secured to its ends outside the rack supporting stirrups. Y
To generate a matrix the space about the core llt and between the heads l2 is filled with plastic materialO which projects beyond the peripheries of the heads and then the roll is moved along the `guides while being maintained in engagement therewith termine the path of travel or" the axis of" the roll with relation to the surface of the pattern. As shown those parts of the guides which support the roll during its tra-vel over the forepart of the pattern are in cylindrical surface containing the forepart surface of the pattern sole so that this surface will always lie in the pitch surface of the gears as they roll past it. rlhe forepart 32 of the .matrix will, therefore, be generated on a cylindrical surface concentric with the roll and by a rolling contact between the finely moulded plastic andthe pattern. Those parts of the guides 34 which support the roll as it passes from the forepart to the shank risc above the surface, of the pattern as shown in Fig. 2, andY then gradually return to said surface so that as the roll rolls over this part of the guides the pattern will gencrate a bulging eccentric shank 36 for the i matrix which gradually approaches or re lturns to a surface concentric with the matrix forepart. During the travel of the roll over the pattern the plastic material may be pressed and banked up about the marginal edges to secure a well definedimw pression of the pattern.
After t-he matrix has been thus generated in the periphery of the plastic roll by the fac-simile of the shoe sole the plastic mate rial is removed from the roll by detaching the heads l2 and withdrawing the tapered core and ribs. The. plasticbody will then be in the form of a sleeve such as shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9 provided on its periphery with the generated matrix. This sleeve may then be utilized as a pattern in casting the leveling roll shown in Figs. 10 and 11. This roll may be provided at its ends with attached gears similar to the gears 18 and may be rolled over the sole to be leveled while the gears are maintained in engagement with racks similar to the racks 2() and when so usedthe concentric part 2 will apply a rolling pressure without material lengthwise slip to the forepart of the sole and then as the ball line is reached the bulging shank portion 4 will swing quickly in against the sharply inclined surface of the shank near the ball line and in crowding the axis of the roll away from the surface of the sole will apply its pressurej in a direction approximately normal to this surface and at the same time will tend to draw the sole somewhat toward the ball line, t

A method of making sole leveling matrix rolls which consists'in rolling a plastic body over a facsimile of a. shoe sole to generate that part of the matrix corresponding to a comparatively flat part of the sole on a cylindrical or concentric surface and that part of the matrix corresponding to an adjoining sharply inclined'part of the sole on a bulging eccentric surface, and reproducing the generated matrix in implastic material.
