In view of the detailed disclosure in said prior patent of the general organization of the machine, the present description will be confined only to such parts of the structure" as it is necessary to l refer to for an understanding of the invention.

The toe gripper comprises a gripper casing 22 on which are mounted a pair' of gripper jaws 24, and a gripper bar connected at its upper end to the upd 'aw lever fl and operated in the usual manner first to close the jaws on the upper and then to move the jaws and the casing to pull the upper. The side grippers in the illustrative type Aof machine present at each side of the shoe a front and a rear pair of gripper jaws 28 arranged respectively to engagey the upper of an adults shoe substantially at the location of the tip seam and farther rearwardly at the side of the forepart, the'two pairs of jaws at each side being mounted respectively on separate gripper casings 30 and 32 slidingly mounted on a single gripper bar 34 which is connected at its upper end to the corresponding side updraw lever 6. The details of the side gripper mechanisms will be Vmore particularly described hereinafter, but it will be understood that, similarly to the operation of the toe gripper, the side gripper jaws at each side of the slice are closed by the movement ofV their gripper bar 34 which acts subsequently to move the jaws and the casings 80 and 32 to pull the upper. After the upper; has been pulled the machine comes automatically to rest .to permit inspection of the Work and any necessary adjustment.
Upon a subsequent starting of the Inachine the overdrawing and upper fastening operations are performed, the grippers being forced inwardly over the shoe bottom by overdraw springs 36 and by the assistance also of a toetacker arm 38 and opposite side tacker arms 40 which are forced inwardly against the respective grippers into position for driving the upper' fastening tacks, .these arms being` provided also with the usual oiverlaying devices for wiping the upper inwardly and -holding it at the tacking points. In their inward movements the several tacker arms press against tripping members 42 on the diiierent grip-- pers, and when the pressure becomes great enough these members are operated to break the connections between the gripper bars and the gripper jaws and permit the jaws to open and release the upper. Following the tacking operation the parts of the machine return to their starting positions.
By reference to Figs. 2 and 3 it will be seen that, similarly to the construction shown in said prior patent, each pair of side gripper jaws comprises a iixedjaw and a pivoted jaw on the associated gripper casing, and that in each of the casings 30 and 32 there is llt) retrasos' a closing slide 444 provided with a roll 46 to engage the pivoted jaw and close it on, the upper stock through upward movement of the closing slide relatively Vto its casing. Movable laterally in each of the closing slides 44 is a slide block `48, these blocks receiving the opposite ends of an equalizer bar 50 which is pivoted on a central block 52. The gripper bar 34, which extends downwardly inte both'casings 30 and 3Q, carries a pivoted latch 54 which, in the starting position of the machine, is arranged to hook under the block 52, as shown in F ig. 3, the latch being held in operating position by means of a spring plunger 56. lhen the parts are in this position lugs 5S on the gripper casings are in engagement with portions ot the frame of the ymachine and springs GO in the gripper bar are under compression betwen the bar and pins 6201i the gripper casings. The closing slides 44 are thus relieved of upward pressure and are positioned suiiiciently low in the casings to per. mit the aws to stand in open position. When the gripper bar 34 is moved upwardly upon the starting ot the machine, the springs GO expand while holding the gripper casings in their lowermost position, and the bar thus acts through the latch 54 to raise the block 52 and through Vthe equalizer bar 50 and the closing slides to close the pivoted jaws on the upper stoel; with substantial equalization oi pressure of the two pairs of jaws on the stock through the action of the equalizer bar. As soon as the jaws have been closed with suiiicient pressure the gripper casings begin to move ,upwardly with thejgripper bar to cause the jaws to pull the upper, the equalizer bar andv the relatively movable closing slides and casings permitting relative movement of the dili'erent pairs ci' gripper jaws in proportion to differences in resistance of the different portions of the upper. It will be noted b-y reference to vFig.l 3 that the tripping members 42 on the opposite side grippers are pivoted on the blocks 52 with their lower ends in position, to engage the lower hooked ends oi the latches 54, and through pressure of the side tac-lier arms in the overdrawing movement of the grippers the members 42 are operated to push the latches-l from under the blocks 52, thus releasing the blocks and breaking the connection between the gripper bars and the closing slides 44, which permits the gripper jaws to open and release the upper.
F or purposes of this invention the rear gripper casing 32 of each side gripper mechanism has doveta-iled therein, at the back of the outer cover plate G4, ay locking member 66 which may be moved from the full line position shown in Fig. 2 into the dotted line position in which it projects within the opening in the rear closing slide 44 in which the block 48 ismounted, this block being cut away or recessed on its outer side (Figs. 2 and 4) to admit the locking member.l lVhen the locking member is thus in its inner position it serves as a stop to prevent such upward movement of the rear slide 44 relatively to the casing B2 as to closel the rear gripper aws. When the machine is operated under these conditions the rear pair oit jaws at each side will not be closed, notwithstanding the `fact that the rear jaws and their casing 32 may be moved bodily upward by the act-ion of the. equalizer bar 50 which acts-as usual to close and operate the 'lront pair oi' jaws when vthe gripper bar is moved upwardly. ln using the machine on a childs shoe, for example, the margin of the upper may be positioned within bot-h the front and rear pairs of side gripper jaws, as convenient in presenting the shoe to the machine, but the rear pair olf jaws at each side will be inoperative to grip and pull the upper and the upper will be pulled only by the 'front pairs o't side gripper jaws. the manipulation of the locking slides 6G the machine may be changed very quickly for operation either on childrens shoes or on adults shoes. To assist inmoving the slides GG in or out, each slide in the construction shown is provided with a groove GS to receive the edge of a screw driver or other suit-able tool. vTo insure that the slide will remain in either its inner or its outer position, a spring plunger 70 is provided ior engagement with suitable recesses in the back tace of the slide. The construction shown is thus simple and convenient and out of the way ot other parts of the machine, but it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the details ot' the mechanism herein illustrated for locking or releasing the closing slide.
It will be understood that in machines ot the illustrative type each side gripper mechanism is so mounted on the updraw lever and in theV guiding i1 ame that it may turn about an axis extending transversely ol' the plane of the shoe bottom. lVhen both pairs of gripper jaws are in engagement with the upper there is no substantial turning movement of the gripper one way or the other in the overdrawing operation by reason vofthe fact that. the upper opposes substantially the same resistance to the inward movement oiE both pairs of gripper jaw". Vhen the rear pair ot side gripper jaws, however, is rendered inoperativeas above described to adapt the machine, 'tor example, i'or operation on childrens shoes, the work offers no resistance to the inward movement of the rear pair otl side gripper a vs in the overdrawing and overlaying operation aside from the resistance to the inward movement of the side gripper as a whole by reason of the engagement of the :front pair of jaws with the upper. It will also be evident that the inward pressure of the side tacler arm against the tripping member 42, which as above explained assists in forcing the gripper inwardly o-ver the shoe bottom, is at the rear ofthe line of pull throughtlic front pair of jaws. The result is that the pressure against the member 42 serves to turn the gripper about its connection with the updraw lever, swinging the rear portion of the front pair of jaws Afarther inwardly than the front portion with a twisting effect on the upper stock in such direction as to tighten portions of the upper at the rear of the jaws inwardlyA and forwardly over the shoulder at the junction of thereforepart and the shank of the shoe. rlhis action is assisted, moreover, by the operation of the side overdraw springs 36 which are in engagement respectively with opposite ends of a plate 72 that extendsv across the gripper, since the rear springencounters less resistance than the spring at the front end of the plate. The result is that on a childs shoe the upper is pulled more-perfectly in conformity to the contour of the last than heretofore, and it is found that when shoes have t-hus been operated upon by the machine there isno necessity as heretofore for pulling the upper inwardly at the rear of the ball of the shoe preparatory to side lasting or to sewing the upper to the insole.
In using theV machine with the rearpairs of side gripper jaws inoperat'ive it is desirable to prevent the driving of the tacks which, in operating on adults slices, are driven in position to hold the portions of the upper which Vare operatedupon by the rear pairs of jaws. This may be done by the use of the tack controlling mechanism with which machines of the illustrative type are commonly provided, as shown in United States Letters Patent No. 1,135,957 granted on April 13, 1915 upon an application of R. In a machine of the class described, a grippercomprising a pair of upper gripping jaws, a casing on which said jaws are mounted for relative closing movement, a gripper bar movable relatively to the casing and operative in said movement to close the jaws, means for operating saidk bar first to close the aws and then to move the jaws and the casing to pull the upper, and a device on said gripper movable into or out of position to prevent in the operative Inovement of said bar such relative movement of the bar and the casing as to close the jaws on the upper.

Ina machine of the class described, the combination with a plurality of pairs of upper gripping jaws and operating vmechanisms for the different respective pairs of jaws com-prising parts relatively movable to close the jaws and movable together wi th the jaws to pull an upper, of a device movable into or out of position to 'lock the parts of one of said operating mechanisms against relative movement for closing its jaws while permitting the normal closing and pulling movements of other operating mechanisms.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with upper pulling means comprising grippers for engaging an upper at opposite sides of a shoe, and means automatically to close said' grippers in the normal cycle of the machine, oit means adjustable to vary the extent of engagement of said grippers with the upper lengthwise of the shoe.

`the combination with upper pulling means comprising opposite side grippers arranged to present at each side of the shoe a plurality of pairs of upper gripping jaws for gripping an upper in different locations lengthwise of the shoe, and power means automatically operative to close said jaws upon the starting yof the machine, 'of means for rendering a pair of said jaws at each side of the shoe inoperative to pull the upper during the normal operation of the other side gripper-jaws.

In a machine of thi class described, the combination with opposite side grippers arranged te present at each side of the shoe front and rear pairs of upper gripping jaws and automatically operative power means for closing said jaws, of a device associated with each of said rear pairs oi jaws and movable into position to render said rear jaws inoperative to `pull the upper while the upper is pulled by the front pairs of jaws. p

In a machine of the class described, the combination with opposite side grippers arranged to present at each side of the shoe. front and rear pairs of upper gripping jaws and comprising parts relatively movable to close the jaws on an upper and movable together with the jaws to pull the upper, oil devices movable into position to prevent relative movement of said. parts to close the rear pairs of jaws while permitting the closing and pulling movements of the front pairs of jaws.

In amachine ot the class described, the combination with opposite side grippers arranged to present at each side of the shoe front and rear pairs ot' upper gripping aws, and means for operating said grippers for closing the jaws on an upper and for moving the jaws to pull the upper, of devices operative independently of the gripping and pulling movements, o1- the front pairs of'jaws 'for rendering the rear pairs of jaws either operative or inoperative to grip and pull the upper.

In a machine or" the class described, the combination with opposite side grippers arranged to present at each side of the shopl front and rear pairs of upper gripping jaws and each comprising an operating member and connections between said member and the front and rear pairs of jaws for closing them on an upper, of devices on said grippers movable into position to render the connections to the rear pairs of jaws inoperative to close said jaws while permitting the closing of the front pairs of jaws by the operation of said members.

Ina machin-e of the class described, the combination with opposite side grippers each having front and rear pairs ci' upper gripping jaws and including` closing slides for the different respective pairs of jaws and a gripper bar to impart jaw closing and upper pulling movements to the jaws through said slides, of members on said grippers movable into position to prevent jaw closing movement of the closing slides for the rear pairs of jaws while permitting the front pairs of jaws to be closed and operated by movement of the gripper bars.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a gripper having different pairs of upper gripping; jaws, and an operating member for effecting closing movements ofthe different pairs of jaws, of a member on said gripper movable into or out ofV position to render one of said pairs ot' jaws inoperative to grip the work without affecting the grippingV of the work by the other pair of jaws.
19. In a machine of the class described,
the combination with a gripper having different pairs of upper gripping jaws, closing slides for the difl'erent respective pairs of jaws, anda gripper bar connected1 to said slides for closing the jaws, of a device movable into position to prevent jaw closing lill) movement of one of said slides without preventing jaw closing movement of the other slide.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a gripper having different pairs of upper gripping jaws, closing slides :for the diiierent respective pairs ot casings on which said diiierent pairs ot jaws are mounted for relative closing movements, closing slides in saidcasings, and a gripper bar arranged to move the slides relatively to said casings to close thevjaws and then to move the slides and the casingstogether to pull the upper, vof a member mounted on one ot said casings and 'movableinto or out of position to restrain the corresponding closing slide from closing movement relatively to its casing.
