  • This invention relates to machines for working uppers over lasts and is herein shown as incorporated in a machine having means for pullinU the upper over the last and means 'tor wiping the upper intol lasted position round the toe, although it is to be understood that in many ot its aspects the invention is not limited to machines including both pulling-over means and lasting means nor to machines in which the means for laying the margin of the upper inwardly over the sole comprises end lasting wipers.
  • overlaying means such as wipers
  • the upper be conformed closely to the margin or feather of the sole or insole (hereinafter termed generically the sole), but that it be held also against substantial loss of such tension as may have been applied in conforming it to the top and the lateral periphery ot the last, It is also desirable that in the overlaying operation the upper be still further tightened over the lateral periphery of the last to produce a'sinooth and uniform contour along the edge o't the sole, An important feature of this invention consists in novel means whereby satisfactory results in these different respects are insured.
  • the construction sh wn comprises an upperengaging presser device which projects over the feather of the solD in position to bend or press the margin ci the upper progressively outward over the wipers as the latter move inwardly and thus to increase the effectiveness ot the wipers in holding the upper against loss of tension and in tightening it over the last.

WILLIAM C. STEWART, OF SWAMPSCO'TT, M SSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T0 UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, OE PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY.
MACHINE FOR 'WORKING UPPERS OVER LASTS.
Application filed January 19,4 1920. Serial No. 352,324.
To all whom it may concer/lt.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. STEWART, a subject of the King of England, residing at Swampscott, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Vilorlring Uppers Over Lasts, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several ligures.
This invention relates to machines for working uppers over lasts and is herein shown as incorporated in a machine having means for pullinU the upper over the last and means 'tor wiping the upper intol lasted position round the toe, although it is to be understood that in many ot its aspects the invention is not limited to machines including both pulling-over means and lasting means nor to machines in which the means for laying the margin of the upper inwardly over the sole comprises end lasting wipers.
In the operation ot overlaying means, such as wipers, it is important not only that the upper be conformed closely to the margin or feather of the sole or insole (hereinafter termed generically the sole), but that it be held also against substantial loss of such tension as may have been applied in conforming it to the top and the lateral periphery ot the last, It is also desirable that in the overlaying operation the upper be still further tightened over the lateral periphery of the last to produce a'sinooth and uniform contour along the edge o't the sole, An important feature of this invention consists in novel means whereby satisfactory results in these different respects are insured. The construction sh wn comprises an upperengaging presser device which projects over the feather of the solD in position to bend or press the margin ci the upper progressively outward over the wipers as the latter move inwardly and thus to increase the effectiveness ot the wipers in holding the upper against loss of tension and in tightening it over the last. advantageously, in the construction shown, the presser device has a beveled outer edge portion projecting over and spaced from the feather of the sole to provide a restricted opening into which the upper is to be wedged by the wipers. In
the illustrative construction the overwiping means and the presser device are combined with means tor pulling the upper over the last prior to the overwiping operation, and a further important feature of the invention resides in an organization of this character whereby insurance is afforded of the effectiveness ot the. overwiping means in securing such control of the upper as to prevent objectionable loss of the pulling-over tension. ln the construction shown, moreover, the presser device serves additionally as a hold-down in engagement with the sole of the shoe on the bottom of the last, and still another advantageous feature is to be recognized in this aspect of the invention.
A further feature of the invention consists in novel means of control tor a presser device or a hold-down, the presser and holddown device in the construction shown being movably mounted on a pulling-over gripper and connected to the sole restothe machine by means of a latch which is operated automatically at a predetermined time in the cycle of the machine to release the device and permit its withdrawal from operative position.
rThe invention also provides, as a further iieature, novel means 'for imparting outdrawing movement to a gripper, this being accomplished in the construction shown by relatively movable members one ofwhich is carried by the gripper while another is part of the presser and hold-clown device hereinbefore described, the different members cooperating to wedge the gripper outwardly from the edge of the shoe bottom in its upper pulling movement. l
Still another feature of the invention, designed particularly to insure against objectionable loss o; tension in upper pulling inachines, comprises novel gripper controlling means whereby a gripper is caused to relai; its hold on the upper only enough to permit relative slip between the gripper and the upper without substantial loss of tension as the overlaying means moves inwardly to do its work. T his result is accomplished in the construction shown by the co-operavtive action of two members one of which moves with the gripper and the other in a direction transverse to the direction of the pull. Still another feature consists in the combination of means for thus veetting a gradual release ot the upper and a presser device co-operating with the over-laying means as hereinbefore set forth.

'lllieinvention is herein shown vas incorporated in a well-known type .of pullingover y machine characteristic features ot v which are shown and described in detail in VUnited States Letters -Patent No. 1,029,387
vgranted on yJune 11, `1912 .upon :an application or' R. l?. Mc'Feely, and other features ofy which, relating more 'particularly .to the ovrwiping .andfastening means are shown and described in Patent- No. 1,280,613 grant ed on October 1.1 1918 upon an application of Qrrell Ashton, and for a more complete understanding of such details of construction as are not hereinafter fully described reference may be made to these prior patents. Machines of this type include in their general organization grippers for engaging and pulling the upper of a slice at the toe end land vat opposite sides of the orepart oi' a last positioned by means loli' a sole rest 2 and a heel rest et, means for laying the margin ofthe tensioned upper inwardly overthesole on the bottom of the last, and means for fastening the upper to the sole. Only oneoi" the two opposite side grippers is shown in the drawings, this gripper coniprising jaws 6. connected by bar 3 to an updraw lever 10 which is pivotel on bar 12 and is connected at its rear end through a spring 14 to a vertically movable slide 16 operated by means of a cam 18 on a cam shaft 2O to which movement is imparted intermittently from pulley 21 under the controlvv of well-known clutch mechanism characteristic of this type of machine. It will be understood that the upper at the opposite sideof the last is pulled by similar mechanism also, c.eliminatedv to the .slide 16.
The-toe gripper in the construction shown comprises .two pairs of relatively movable jawsf22 which are mounted in a casing 211- to turn about axes substantially perpendicular to the sole in conformity to the contour yofthe shoe round the toe, the outerfor front jawo'f each pair being pivoted at yf26f-t`o the other jaw and connected yto an operating member 28 which is slidable up and down in the casing. The two members 28 are connected to the lower end of the gripper bar 30 which extends downwardly within the casing 2land is connected Vat its upper end to an .updraw flever32. The casing 24 is provided with lugslBd which are arranged to engage abra'clet 36 on the trame or' the machine to limit downward movement of the Casing and to permit the bar 30 in .its continued downward movement to impart openinomovement to the pivotedi gripper jaws, .the gripper opening .movement of the bar being effected against' the pressure of a f.
spring y38 which bears oppositely Vagainst the 2d and the bar 30.V In the initial portion of' the upward movement of the bar 30 the spring 38 acts to hold the casing yin its lowermost .position and thus to render the bar operative, by movement of the members 23, to close the aws on the upper, anl after the aws have firmly gripped vthe upper the casing and both pairs of jaws are moved upwardly together .by the action of the gripper har to pull the upper. Y 'l The upper pulling movement is imparted to the toe gripper lever 32 through a spring 40 by the action of a vertically movableV slide 41 operated by a cam l2 on the cam shaft 20. If it is desired to open the toe gripper after the upper has been pulled in order, for example, to re-adj'ust the upper in the gripper jaws, this may be done by the use of a pivoted lever /13 on the Jfront end ot the lever 32, the lever i3 being connected by gear teeth to a pivoted ,releasing member le which carries a lug 43 engaging under an offset portion of' a slide 43 which is mounted on the gripper' bnr 30V and iscohnected at its lower end to the casi g 24. pressing the lever i3 upwardly the slide e173 is elevated and upward movement is thus imparted to the casingl and to the two pairs of jaws while the bar and the members 28 are held against such movement by the lever 32, and the pivoted jaws are'thns opened by the action ofthe members 23 distance proportional to the extent of movement of the member ld-x These 'tea-tures ot construction of the toe gripper and ot the means whereby itsjaws may be opened man ually are substantially the same asV in the disclosure of United .ttates Letters Patent No, 1,137,566 granted on April 27, 1915i .upon an application of Orrell. Ashtony to which reference may be made for a .more completer understanding of the details of the structure. -It will bey understood that in the opera'- tion of the machines of this general type the machine comes automatically to rest after the upper has been pulled by the grippers and while it is held under tension to permit the operator to observe the condition of the work and to malre such adjustments as may be required. Then the machine is again started, side clamping and supporting devices are swung inwardly into operative relation to the shoe, and either immediately, or following another pause in the cycle, the overlaying and fastening operations are performed. ln common with the machine shown in prior Patent Yo. 1,280,613, the present machine includes devices for overlaying and fastening the margin of the upper at they opposite sides of the shoe and devices for wiping the upper into lasted position and for fastening it round thetoe end of the shoe. For an understanding of the present invention it is only nec essary to refer in detail to the means for overwiping and fastening the upper at the toe. This means comprises an arm 52 which is mounted to swing lengthwise of the shoe and carries at its lower end relatively movable wiper plates 54k which are advanced lengthwise of the shoe by the rearward movement of the arm and are simultaneously closed inward laterally of the shoe at the opposite sides by the side oveilaying and fastening devices in substantially the sa ne manner as explained in said Ashton patent. As also described in said patent, the arm 52 carries a plurality of tack holders 56 and corresponding` tack drivers 58 which are opferated by a driver bar 60 for driving the several tacks iiiV different locationsl round the toe to hold the upper in lasted position. Rearward movement .is imparted to the arm 52 'by means of a Slide 62 which is connected at its front end to the arm and is also operative to release the driver bar 60 when the tackers have been carried into proper relation to the shoe. It will be understood that by the action of the saine slide 62 the side overlaying and taclring devices are moved inwardly and rendered operative to drive their tacks. As in the machines described in said prior patents, the present inacliine is designed to effect an overdrawinp; movement of ythe side grippers 6 in advance of the inwardly coming side overlaying and taclring devices, such movement being controlled as usual by the action of a slide (ilY which is moved rearwardly with the slide 62. lt will be noted by reference to Fig. l
that the slide 64C carries a roll in engage-L ment with the rear face of the toe gripper bar 30 to position the toe gripper initially lengthwise of the shoe. ln the present inachine, however, no overdrawing movement of the toe gripper while holding the upper is contemplated, ,the gripper being held from rearward mov-ement at the time when the slide (Se moves rearwardly by mea-ns to be hereinafter described. ln distinction also from the disclosure of prior Patent No. 1,280,613 it is contemplated that in the present machine the toe gripper will retain its hold of the upper until after the machine has been started to effect the overlaying and fastening operations and that the wipers 54e. instead of being positioned manually in engagement with the upper, will be entirely automatic in their operation on the shoe, will be more fully explained hereinafter.
For a purpose of the present invention the machine is provided with an upper engaging presser device which in the construction shown also serves as a hold-down in engagement with the sole in front of the sole rest 2, this device comprising a pair of presser members or plates 66 curved in ape` proximate conformity to the curvature of the edge of the sole round the toe and pivotally mounted on a pin 68 to permit them to si i inward laterally of the shoe, the pin being held detachably by means of ay spring pin 70 in a. forwardly extending portion of a holder 72 which is pivoted at 74 onra slide 76 mounted in a guideway for upward and downward movement along the gripper casing By reference to Fig. 2 and also to l, and 6, it will be seen that the 66 have beveled outer edge portion vide a wedge surface which in the opera ve position ot 'the plates projects outwardly over and faces the feather a of the sole and that a narrow space or opening` is thus provided between the projecting edge of die plates and -the feather of the sole into which the margin of the upper must be forced by the action of the wipers As the wipers close inwardhY the plates (it) act to press or bend the margin of the upper outwardly over' the wipers and thus to increase the effectiveness ofthe wipers in their frictional hold upon the stock and to render them effective to hold the upper against slip earlier in their inward movement than if such a device were not provided. lt will also be evident that the beveled edge pou tions of the plates act to wedge the upper downward against' the teather of the sole. tpg Wpgys in l "ion shown being downwardly v i of a spring TS as in the construction described in latent No. 1,280,613. ln order to accommodate the plaies (3G to different shapes or sizes of shoesthcj: are permitted to ield inwardly about their pivot 68 againstthe tension of a spring 8O which tends to spread them apart. hey may thus project initially farther outward over the feather of the sole at the sides than is indicated in Fig. 2 and as the wipers close inwardly they may yield laterally of the shoe in 'respense "to the pressure ofthe upper while acting with their outwardly bending and clamping effect on the upper at the sides ,as well vas at the extreme end of the toe. For wide variations in shape and siae different sets of plates; may be used, the spring pin 70 readily yielding to permit such replacement.
The initial position of the presser plates 66 and their supporting mea-ns is indicated in Fig. 3, in which the slide 76 is held by means 4of aspring 82, which extends downwardly in recess inthe slide, in its uppermost 'position determined by engagement of a lug 84 'at the lower end of the slide with the lower face ofthe casing 24. In this position of the parts vthe holder 72 is swung inwardly into substantially parallel relation tothe slide 76 by a leaf spring 86 which at its lower end is fast on the holder 7 2 and atnits upper fend hears on a pin '88 on the slide.y rlhe presser plates 66 aire thus posit'i'oned close to the gripper jaws for engagement with the sole when the shoe is'` presented Vto the Amachine and the margin of the upper is inserted within the jaws. In this position of the parts the holder 72 is locked against upward movement by means of a latchrQO which hooks under a projection 92 in a recess in the end of the sole rest 2, t-he vlatch being mounted on a pivot 94 on the holder 7 2 with its' lower end normally pressed outward by a spring 96.k The plates are thus held by the sole rest against upward movement away from the sole, and are also held by engagement of the end of the sole rest with the holder 72 against bodily rearward movement over the sole while the gripper is operated bythe lever 32 togpull the upper.
1n order to impart to the gripper a forward or outward movement relatively to the edge of the shoe bottom to cause the gripper jaws to clear the presser plates and the edge of the sole as well as todraw the upper forwardly at the toe, the holder 72 is provided with wedge faces 98`which cooperate with wedge faces 100 formed on lugs 102 on the casing 24 to wedge the gripper n forwardly as it moves upwardly, the holder 72 being restrained from rearward movement by ,the action of the sole rest to cause it to serve las an abutment against the rearward pressure kofthe gripper. After the overwiping operation has beensubstantially or approximately completed the latch 90 is operated to release the holder 72 from the sole rest and permit the springs S2 and to act respectively to move the slide 76 to its uppermost position relatively to the gripper and to swing the holder 72 inwardly toward the gripper. For this purpose there is utilized afurther upward movement of the gripper during which its jaws are peri ,i5 'radar mitted to slip over the margin of the upper as will behereinafter explained. des the gripper is thus moved upwardly, lugs 104 upon the casing24 are carried into engagement with inwardly projecting lingers 106 on the upper end of the pivoted latch 90 and actto swing the lower end of the lat-oh forwardly until it disengages the projection 92on the sole rest. The presser plates are thus withdrawn above the `work` out of the path of movementl of the inwardly moving tacirer mechanism and are returned to their initial position relatively to the gripper jaws.
ln order to insure that the wipers 54 'in co-operation with the presser plates 66 shall secure an effective hold-of theY upper such as to prevent 'loss of the pulling-over tension, the machin'eis provided with means forel'lecting a vgradual, release of the upper by the ltoe gripper as the wipers move inward-ly, kwithout permitting the gripper to lose substantial control of the upper until the wipers -are suiliciently far advancedpto render them elllectiv'e to hold the upper. For this purpose power means is provided to operate the mechanism hereinbefore referred to as means whereby the toe gripper may be opened manual-ly. As already explained, movement of the releasing member 44 by the actionof the lever'43 draws the bar 48 and the gripper casing 24 upwardly along the relatively stationary. gripper bar 30 and thus causes the pivoted frontjaws of the gripper to open a. distanceV proportional to the movement'of the member 44. In the construction shown this member is provided with a depending portion upon which there is mounted a contact block 108 in position to be engaged by a roll-110 which is supported on the outer end of the slide 62. As'theslide 62 is moved rearwardly to swing the arm 52 and its supported wiper andta'cker mechanisms toward the shoe theroll 110 is carried into engagement withtheV block 108 and by the continued movement of the slide'` the member 44 is thus turned about its ivot in a direction to open the gripper jaws. Preferably the partsy are so arranged that the roll 110 begins to operate the member 44 when the wipers have been moved substantially or approximately to the position illustrated in Fig. 4 and have thus begun to press the up er inwardly over the feather of` the sole. `T e effect of the roll 110 on theV member 44 is to cause theijaws to relantheir pressure slightly on the upper, enough tol permit them to slip .over the upper under the influence of the updraw spring 40 which tends constantly to move the lever 32 and the gripper farther upwardly.` In order that the gripper jaws may still engage the upper with sufficient pressure to render them eiectiv'e to prevent substantial loss of the` -i ing of the machine the tension of the upper until the wipers have advanced fai' enough to hold the upper' effectively in. coi-operation with the plates 66, the front face of the block 108 which is engaged by the roll 110 is inclined to the direction of pulling movement of the gripper. 1t will be evident that by this construction the gripper releasing effect of the roll 110 in its rearward movement is partially counteracted by the upward movement of the gripper and the block 108 as the jaws slip over the stock. Preferably the angle of inclination of the front face o-f the block 108 is so proportioned to the movement of the roll 110 that the roll after its initial action on the member 44 to cause the jaws to relax their pressure on the upper maintains the member in a substantially uniform relation to the gripper and thus keeps the pressure of the substantially constant on the margin of the upper .until the latter finally slips from between the jaws. The time when the ico-11110 begins to act on t-he member 44 may be varied by adjustment of the block j 108 forwardly or rearwardly on the depending portion of the member 44, the block being held in adjusted position by means of a clamping screw 111 and backed up by a set screw 112. Y
ln the operation of the machine, as far as concerns the present invention, it may be stated briefly that a shoe is presented to the machine while the parts ai'e in their initial positions indicated in Fig. 1. In thus .presenting the work the margin of the upper is arranged within the open gripper jaws an the end face of the last is engaged with the inner jaws 22 which determine as usual the lengthwise position ofthe shoe in the ma chine. The initial relation of the plates 66 to the jaws 22 is such that when the shoe is thus positioned the plates engage the sole with their Vouter beveled edges projecting over the feather of the sole. Upon the startupper is pulled by the grippers, the plates 66 being held by the latch 90 in their initial relation to the sole and the toe gripper being wedged forwardly during its upward movement by the action of the coi-operating wedge faces 98 and 100. The machine then comes to rest with the parts at the toe of the shoe positioned as indicated in Fig. 2. lhen the machine is again started, the side clamping devices are. moved into operative position and the Yoverwiping and fastening operationsl are performed at the toe as well as at the opposite sides of the forepart. As the wipers 54 are moved rearwardly lby the arm 52 and are closed inward laterally of the shoe in the well-known manner described in thev prior Ashton patent, they engage the margin' of the upper and press it inwardly against and over the edge of the sole. It
will be evident that as the wipers continue to move they become increasingly effective to clamp. the upper against the sole While wiping it inwardly and that in the course of the inward movement of the wipers the plates 66 become effective to assist the wipersy in their holding action on the upper by pressing against its inner surface and by bending it outwardly over the wipers and clamping it against them. At a time determined by adjustment of the block 108, but preferably when the wipers have advanced substantially or approximately to the position indicated in Fig. 4, the roll 110 becomes effective to turn the releasing member 44 slightly and thus to cause the jaws 22 to relax their hold on the upper suthciently to permit it to slip as the wipers continue their inward movement. By the time the wipers have wedged the upper far enough into the space between the feather of the sole and the wedge faces of the plates 66 to render the wipers effective to hold the upper securely against loss of tension, the margin of the upper slips out from betweeny the jaws Substantially at this timethe lugs 104 on the gripper casing become eective' to swing the latch 90 far enough to release it from the soley rest member 92, whereupon the plates 66 are withdrawn from operative position. It will be evident that the time of such withdrawing movement of the plates 60, as well as the time when the' gripper jaws begin to relax their pressure on the upper and permit it to slip, is deterd mined by adjustment of the block 108, since the operation of the latch 90 is effected by the upward movement of the gripper in response to the lessened resistance. Upon release of tlielatch 90 and the upward movement of the slide 76, the sole rest is no longer effective to prevent rearward movement of the gripper and the usual overdraw springs 114 are permitted to act to swing the gripper' rearwardly over the shoe as an additionalsafeguard against interference between the gripper and the wiper and tacker mechanism. Such rearward vmovement of the gripper is permitted by the slide 64 which, as liereinbefore explained, moves rearwardly in unison with the slide 02. As soon as the tackers have been advanced to the required position and have been operated to drive their upper fastening tacks as indicated in Fig. 6, the. parts are returned to their starting Vpositions and the shoe is released. In such return of the parts the toe gripper is moved forwardly t-o its initial position by the slide 64 and is moved downwardly by the lever 32 unt-il the latch 90 again hooks under the member 92 on the sole rest..
While the invention is herein illustrated by reference to turn shoe work, it will be understood that the invention is not limited ra inganflipperI engaging tace toi-med to' protion LipperV fastening means of the particular type illust-rated,y and that, in general, variations in. mechanical details are contemplated within the spirit and scope oi the claims.
