To all whom it ma concern: Be it known that Fannnmcx L. Ra Qua a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Circuit Controllers, of which the following is a full, clear else, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, .forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to circuit controllers and is particularly applicable to controllers for single phase motors 'altho h certain features of the invention may advantageously used in other relations.
To facilitate starting of single phase motors, the same are usually provided with an auxiliary winding to be included in circuit during starting and excluded from circuit during running and the present invention has among its objects to provide an improved and simplified controller for efiecting the necessa starting and running connections for su'c motors. g
Another object is that of providing a controller of the aforesaid character having a push button operati member adapted when moved in one Erection to provide startin connections for the motor and adapte when released to permit automatic establishment of running connections.
Another object is to provide a push button controller of the character stated having lectro-magnetic retaining means adapted to be de-energized automatically or at will, said controller also having mechanical trip ing means associated therewith adapted or push button actuation, and is adapted to be tripped by push button actuated tri ping means.

Contacts 10 and 11 are each provided with a terminal member 27 said terminal members extending upwardly at right angles to base 24 and beingprovided with bindin screws 28 at the up er ends and. having t ir lower ends secur to base 24 by screws 29. Supporting plate 23 is formed to provide spaced downwardly extending lugs 30 and the'same is also provided with openings on the opposite sides of said lugs to receive the ash buttons 18 and 22. Lugs 30 are provided with openings adjacent their lower ends to receive a pivot iii pin 31 which serves support contact eleinents 12 and 13 and dogs 21.
Contact element 12 is arranged for mounting between lugs and as shown in liig. 4 the same includes a sheet metal stamping 32 provided with parallel upstanding arms 33 having their right ends connected by a portion 34. Arms are provided with openings 35 intermediate their ends to receive pivot pin 31 and with openings at the left ends thereof to receive a pivot pin 36 for armature 20. Said arms are also provided with slots 37 on opposite sides of the openings 35 for a purpose hereinafter set forth. Connecting portion 34 is provided with an opening 38 to receive spring 17 and the same projects beyond arms 33 and 1s bent upwardly to form a seat for an insulatin member 39. Insulating member 39 is secured to portion 34 and contacts 14 and 15 are secured to opposite ends of said member said contacts being U-shaped andbein provided with flexible leads 40 to be seen to terminals on base 24.
Clontact element 13 as shown in Fig. 3 includes a sheet metal supportin member 41 provided with parallel upstan ing arms 42 and a connecting portion 43 intermediate the ends of said arms. Arms 42 are spaced to straddle lugs 30 of plate 23, and the same are provided with openings intermediate their'ends for receiving pivot pin 31. Connecting portion 43 has an insulating member 44 secured to the under side thereof and contact 16 is secured to a projecting end portion of said member and is provided with a flexible lead 45 to be secured to aterminal on base 24. Push button 18 is pivotally mounted on pin 48, said pin being arrang d within the left hand slots 37 of arms 33 and being fixed to the left hand ends of arms The upper end of spring 17 passes through opening 38 in supporting member 32 and is attached to a pin 47 arranged within the right hand slots 37 of said member and secured to the ri ht hand ends of arms 42. The lower end 01 spring 17 passes through an o ening in insulating base 24 a recess in the lower face of base as best shown in 1.
Electromagnetic winding 19 is provided with a laminated core 52 which is secured to a sheet metal frame 53 and is preferably provided with a shading coil 52. Frame 53 is lJ-shaped in cross section. the side walls thereof being arranged on opposite sides of winding 19 and having their upper ends bent inwardly to provide portions for securement to the lower face of supporting plate by screws 54. Armature member 20 is also iJ-shaped in cross section, the same being so proportioned that the side walls thereof overlap the side walls of supporting frame 53. As shown in Fig. 5 the front wall of said armature member is formedto provide hooked projections 55 for receiv- 111g pivot pin 36 and forwardly extend ng projections 56 to be en aged y tripping dogs 21. The front wal of said armature is also formed to provide a shoulder 57 said shoulder being arranged to engage the under side of core 52 when contact element 12 is moved into closed position. Armature 20 is biased to move away from core member 52 by a coil sprin 58, said spring having one end fixed within an opening 58 in one of the arms 33 of member 32 and its opposite and arranged to engage the left hand face of armature 20. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the tripping dogs 21 are ivoted intermediate their ends on supporting pin 31 the left hand ends thereof being arranged below projections 56 and the right ends thereof being connected to push button 22 by bracket members 59 best shown in Fig. 6.
From the foregoin it will be observed that spring 17 home ly holds contact elements 12 and 13 in the positions shown in Fi 1. Assuming now the push button 18 is epressed it is apparent that during downward movement thereof contact element 13 will move in a counter-clockwise direction against the action of spring 17 and independentl of contact element 12, the latter element eing frictionally held in the position shown in Fig. 1. Upon engagement of contact 16 with contact 14, pin 46 abuts the lower end of the left hand slots 37 in supportin member 32 and upon continued. downwar movement of push button 18, contact elements 12 and 13 are moved simultaneously into the position shown in Fig. 2. Referring to Fig. 7 it will be observed that stationary contacts 10 and 11 are connected to supply lines L and L and it is assumed that the running winding of the motor is connected across contacts 14 and 15 while the starting winding is connected across contacts 15 and 16. Thus upon movement of contact elements 12 and 13 to the positions shown in Fig. 2 both of the windings of the motor will be energized. Winding 19 is and is attache to a pin 50 which is seated in connected across contacts 14 and 15 and immediately upon movement of contact. element 12 into closed position the same is energized and attracts armature 20 to hold element 12 in closed position. Assuming new that push button 18 is released, s ring 17 moves contact element 13 in a cloc wise direction independently of contact element 12 to disengage contact 16 from contact 14 for exclusion of the starting winding of the motor. Contact element 12 remains in closed position subject to low voltage conditions in winding 19 and under such conditions spring 58 moves armature member 20 out of latching engagement with core 52 whereupon contact elements 12 and 13 return to positions shown in Fig. 1 with a. snap action under the action of spring 17. Themotor can also be stopped at an time by depression of push button 22, epression of said button serving to move the left hand ends of dogs 21 upwardly under projections 56 of armature 20 to trip the latter. Obviously the winding 19 can be arranged either in shunt as shown or in series in the motor circuit and one or more control switches can be provided for de-energizing the same.
The aforedescribed controller 1S provided with a rectangular enclosing casing 60, said casing being provided with an opening 61 at one end thereof to receive the required leads and having a plurality of lugs 62 adjacent the upper edge thereof to engage the under side of supporting (plate 23. Supporting plate 23 is secure to lugs 62 by screws 63 and the same is also ta ped to receive screws 64 for securement o a face plate 65 above the same.
While the aforedescribed controller has been shown and described in connection with 'a single phase motor having an auxiliary starting windin it is apparent that the same is also a apted for ,use with other types of motors. Also it is apparent that the contacts can be arranged in other ways to suit other control requirements.
What I-claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: T
1. In a motor controller, in combination, a plurality of stationary contacts, a pluralit of ivoted contact members, one being a apte to co-operate with said stationary contacts to establish running connections and the other being adapted to make contact with said former member and to cooperate therewith to establish starting connections, electro-magnetic..means for retaining said former contact member in closed position, a pair of push buttons arranged on opposite sides of the pivots of said contact members one being adapted when depressed to effect sequentially contact between said members and between said former member and stationary contacts and,

3. In a motor controller, in combination, a plurality of stationary contacts, a plurality of movable contact elements one having contacts co-operating with said station-- ary contacts to establish running connections and the other being adapted to cooperate with certain of the contacts of said former element to establish starting-connections, a spring biasing both of said elements for circuit interruption, a push button operatively connected to said elements ing adapted to co-operate' with said stationary contacts to establish running connections and the other being adapted to contact with said former element and to cooperate therewith to establish starting connections, electromagnetic means associated with said former elementfor maintaining the same in circuit closin position and a pair ofdpush buttons, one Icing ada ted to trip sai retaining means and the ot er being operatively connected to said :contact elements and bein adapted when depressed to effect circuit 0 osing movements of said elements sequentially and when released to permit circuit interruptin movement of one of said elements while t e other is maintained in circuit closing position by said electromagnetic means. i

In a motor controller, in combination, a plurality of stationary contacts, a pluralit of contact elements pivoted concentrica y and one. having contacts co-operating with said stationary contacts for the control of running connections and the other having a contact co-operating with a contact of the former element for the control of starting connections, a lost motion connection between said elements, a reciprocable push button adapted when depressed to maintain both of said elements in closed position and when released to permit opening of said latter-element independently of the former, an armature member pivoted to said formerelement and unwinding for at- &
tracting said armature to maintain said element in closed position subject to release under predetermined electrical conditions;

In a motor controller, incombination, a plurality of stationary contacts, a plu-= rality of contact elements pivoted concen trically and one having contacts co-operat ing with said stationary contacts for the control of running connections and the other having a contact co-operatin with a contact of the former element or the control of starting connections, a lost mo tion connection between said elements, a reciprocable push button adapted when dememes pressed to maintain both of said elements in closed position and when released to permit opening of said latter element independently of the former, an armature member pivoted to said former element, a winding for attracting said armature to maintain said element in closed position subject to release under predetermined electrical-loonditions, and means including a push button for tripping said armature In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
