WATER HEATER.
Application filed August 22, 1922 Serial No. 588,584.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ROBERT R liner, a citizen of the United states, residing in the city of New York, county of Queens, and,
State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Water Heaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 1s a section of my improvedheater area. My improved apparatus is arranged p so that it may be assembled readily and is particularly adapted for use in heating water in a domestic hot water system. invention also comprises the various features which I shall hereinafter describe and claim.
Referring to the drawings, 2 indicates the water heating chamber which is formed with convoluted shell 3 and is contained in a cylinder 4 which forms with the outer face of the shell 3 a chamber 5 for the heating medium. The chamber 2 has tapped openings 6 and 7, the o ening 6 being-the inlet and the opening being the outlet. The upper end of the shell 3 has an annular flange 8 which is machined and engages amachined face 9 in the opening which oocupies substantially the whole top of the cylinder 4. The machined faces on the member 2 and cylinder 4 are arranged at differential angles, the-angle of the face 8 being preferably two degrees and that of the face 9, 2 degrees, so that the face 8 will have a line contact with the face 9 on the cylinder. The bottom of the cylinder 4 is apertured at 10 for admission of the inlet pipe 11 and has a shoulder 12 for a gasket about the aperture 10 to provide a bearing surface for a nut 13 which engages a thread 14 on the inlet pipe 11 and by which the shell 3 is drawn down so as to draw the face 8 into a tight'cngagement with the differentially tapered face 9 of the cylinder 4. The cylinder 4 is provided with tapped open ngs 15 and 1G for the inlet and outlet be closed by a plug.

The heating medium enters the cylinder 4 passes throughthe inlet between the cylin voluted wall 3 of the chamber 2 and out the (pipe 17 and then return pipe 18 to the boiler.- The water to be heated enters the chamber 2 through the inlet opening 6 and is quickly heated by convection from the heat of the water without the wall of the chamber 2 and, rising, asses out through the outlet opening 7. If desired, the inlet and outlet may be connected with a range boiler and will serve as an auxiliary therefor, or they may be connected with a storage tank connected with a domestic supply system.

The terms and expressions which I have employed are used as terms of descriptionand not of limitation, and I have no intention, in the use of such terms and expressions, of excluding any mechanical equivalents of the features shown and described, or portions thereof, but recognize that various structural modifications are possible within the scope of the invention claimed.
What I claim is: .1. A water heater comprisin shell for the water to be heated,
an inner an outer shell arranged about theinner shell and dproium tight engagement, the two shells being free from other connecting parts, said shells each having an inlet and an outlet.
2. A Water heater comprising an outer shell and an inner shell, the outer shell having an aperture in one end of greater diameter than the body of the inner shell, the inner shell and the outer.shell having differentially tapered surfaces arranged to be brought into engagement with each other, and a nut and thread connection for drawing the said parts into a line engagement.
3. A water heater comprising an outer shell and an inner shell, the outer shell having an aperture in one end of greater diameter than the body of the inner shell, the inner shell and the outer shell having at corresponding ends differentially tapered engaging surfaces, the inner shell at the opposite end having an extension, a nut engaging said extension and having a bearing against the outer shell whereby, as the nut draws down on the said extension, the said differential surfaces at the other end of the device are drawn down into a line engagement.
4. A water heater comprising an outer shell and an inner shell, the outer shell having an aperture in one end of greater diameter than the body of the inner shell, and the inner shell having convolutions to provide an extended heating surface, meeting surfaces on said shells, one of said surfaces being inclined at a greater angle to the horizontal than the otherto compensate for inequalities in said shells, and means for drawing said surfaces tightly into engagement.
